Sometimes the water from the sea breaks down these walls, and then the sea rushes in through the beach, and runs all over the land.
Houses and trees, cows and sheep, have been washed away. In more serious situation, even many people drowned(溺水). So these dykes play a great role protecting the living things around.
Once, when a little boy was returning home in the evening, he found a hole in one of the dykes, through which the water was flowing(流出).
His father had often told him that when this happened, unless the water was stopped, it would soon make the hole so large that the sea would flow over the land.
At first, he thought he would run home and tell his father. But then he realized that it wasn’t a perfect idea. He said to himself, “It may be dark before dad can come, and we will not be able to find the hole again. It would be too late if I ask dad for help.” So the boy decided to stay and try to stop the hole alone.
The brave boy sat down and put his hand in the hole without thinking twice to keep back the water. There he stayed, hour after hour, in the cold and the dark, all through the night!
The next morning, a man happened to come past and saw him. He could not understand why the boy was there. So he shouted out to him, “What are you doing there, boy?” “There is a hole in the dyke,” said the boy, “and I am keeping back the water.” Poor little boy! He was so cold and tired that he could hardly speak.
The man was completely shocked. He hurried to come over and set the boy free. The boy got the hole closed up, so the land was saved—thanks to the brave little Holland boy!

For high school student Ding Jiacheng, it’s a problem that many students ignore the important jobs done by the non-teaching workers. He wanted to make a change.
The boy from Hangzhou Entel Foreign Language School, together with several other students, carried out a project—“The Invisible are Important”. They hoped more students would see and respect such staff on campus. The project won a prize at China Thinks Big, a competition held by Harvard and Tsinghua University to encourage teenagers to study social issues.
“My team members and I sent questionnaires to 158 students,” said Ding. “In one question, 56 percent of the students said they would say hello to those non-teaching workers, while only 17 percent strongly believe that every student should do so.”
The team also observed(观察) the interactions between students and workers. “While most students follow the rules of the teachers, one-third of the students go against the rules of the dormitory attendants(宿舍管理员),” said Ding. It shows that students treat non-teaching staff differently from teaching staff.
The main reason, according to Ding, is that students know little about the work done by non-teaching staff. They also have few chances to communicate with them. Therefore, Ding’s team shot videos to show staff working on campus. They also held a basketball match between students and non-teaching staff to increase their interactions. “We’ve also made a series of stickers,” said Ding. “We hope these cute images will help young people like the non-teaching workers more. The activity helped me understand that we all can make a positive influence through our creative ideas.”

It would not be surprising if this story were true. As a child, Marie loved books and experiments. Nothing could distract her from her studies. She did not lose this love of learning as she got older. In the 1880s, very few women went to college, and even fewer women became scientists. Marie did both.
After she met and married another scientist, Pierre Curie, the two of them began working together. Their studies focused on the element radium (镭元素). They had discovered it during their research. Radium is found in some rocks. It is a white metallic element with a blue glow (微弱而稳定的光). The glow lasts for a thousand years.
The radium glows because it produces energy. That is one reason why the Curies were so interested in it. But studying radium is not like opening a book. Radium must be isolated (分离) from the rock around it. That is like trying to take just the chocolate out of chocolate milk.
The couple spent their life savings on eight tons of rock. An old shack (棚屋) became their workplace. They heated the rock to remove the bits of radium from it. Days of work turned into months. Finally, they spent four years in that shack studying the mysterious element with the blue glow.
During their research, the Curies found that radium could help treat disease. That is when Marie and her husband became big news. They were written about often. This got the public interested in radium. Soon, the Curies’ work earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics. This award is one of the highest honors in the world. Marie had come a long way from the days of chair pyramids.
1. Why did Marie knock her sister’s chair pyramid over?A.Because she was angry with her sister. | B.Because she paid full attention to reading. |
C.Because she didn’t notice it while sleeping. | D.Because she was busy doing experiments. |

The first story is from Ray. "My cat, Tiger, hates it when I use my iPad because it takes my attention away from him. One year, I had a fall at home and was on the floor for 16 hours. During this time, I was unable to move and couldn't get to the phone to call for help. Tiger stayed by my side until he disappeared under my bed. 'What's he up to?' I wondered. To my surprise, he started to push something towards me. It was my iPad, which I didn't realize had fallen off the bed and onto the floor. He probably didn't know what it was, but he knew that it made me happy. Thanks to Tiger, I was able to communicate with my friend, Becky, who then told my doctor."
The second story is from Colin. "Years ago, my friend Julius saved a bird-a wild 'Mom' cockatoo(鹦鹉)from the side of the road and kept it as a pet in a big cage(笼子). It lost one of her wings, so she was unable to return to the wild. Soon, two wild cockatoos came visiting and one 'Dad' bird wanted to find his way into the cage. The 'Mom' cockatoo in the cage was soon expecting. But as she couldn't fly, 'Dad' cockatoo built a home in the tree, keeping off everyone who got close to 'Mom' cockatoo. 'Baby' cockatoo would spend his days flying off with his dad, leaving his mom behind. She would sit and wait until they returned home each afternoon. The family stayed together happily."
After reading the stories, don’t you think we should get along well with animals? No matter they are our pets or live in the wild, they have their feelings. We should respect every life in the world.

Johanna loved strawberries. They were her favorite fruit. Last Saturday, she went to a farm to pick some. It was her first time. Before that, she had always bought strawberries at the store.
When Johanna arrived at the farm, she was surprised. Strawberries did not grow on trees! They did not even grow on big bushes. They grew on something like vines (藤). And there were so many of them.
Johanna was given a basket. She could pick as much as she wanted. The more she picked, the more she would have to pay. She wasn't sure how much to get. She started filling her basket. She ate some strawberries while picking them. They were so big and juicy! And the sun had made them sweet.
The basket was quickly filled. Johanna took it to the farmer to pay for it. She handed him a ten-dollar bill (钞票) and got back one dollar. “How cheap!” Johanna thought.
When she got home, Johanna quickly cleaned the strawberries and put them in the fridge. Some, she could use to make jam (果酱). Others, she could eat fresh or with sugar on top. She thought about crushing (压碎) some over some ice-cream, or freezing some for later use. There were so many things to do with strawberries, and they were all delicious!
