In Chaling county (县), Zhuzhou, some disabled children had d    1     going to school. Chen Yanhui, a primary school teacher, volunteered to teach these kids at their homes in her free time. What she did made     2     big difference to these children.

Chen started doing this about six years     3    . Most of her students were from poor families. Some of the students had no parents. Chen Qiu, 19, is the     4     (old) of these students. She is autistic (患自闭症的). In the past, she used to lie on the bed all day. She didn’t want to move     5     talk to others. She liked to stay alone instead of playing with others. Now,     6     Chen’s help, the girl greets (打招呼) people and does what she can do to support     7     family. The girl’s mother said, “Ms. Chen is very     8    . Sometimes she has to teach one thing again and again, but she never gets angry. ”

Chen’s father joined her to help these students. He used to be a teacher. In order to go to the students’ homes, Chen’s father rode (骑) a motorbike and carried Chen on country roads. No matter (无论) what the weather was like, they never     9    . When people asked Chen and her father     10     they volunteered, they said, “We want every child to enjoy the happiness of learning.”

Weeks ago, I was driving home with Amy, my 6-year-old daughter, when the song Afterlife by Ingrid Michaelson came on the radio.

“This song makes me ________,” I said.

“Why?” Amy asked.

“The lady who wrote it, her mom had cancer (癌症). So this song is about her mom’s fight against cancer. But a few months ago, her mom died.”

“That’s ________,” said Amy. “Do kids get cancer, Mommy?”

“Yes,” I answered. “It doesn’t seem right that kids would get cancer, but it happens.”

Then the song ended, and Amy asked ________, “If you’re a kid who gets cancer, where do you live?”

“Well, sometimes you live at your house. Sometimes you live at the ________. Sometimes you go back and forth (反复来回) between your house and the hospital.”

“I would ________ my family if I were at the hospital all the time,” she said.

“I’m sure those kids miss their families. It’s pretty ________ to be so sick and be at the hospital all the time.”

She was quiet until the night.

“Mommy,” she said. “I want to make the kids at the hospital feel better. Can I do that?”

So we thought together, and finally she decided to make get-well cards for the kids at the hospital. The whole time we worked, we ________ the kids who would get the cards, what their lives might be like, and how often they could see their families…

Arsh Pal had a big dream when he started selling his artwork at the age of eight. He wanted to ________ $1,000 for charities (慈善机构).

Now, five years later, the American boy has achieved his ________. Arsh has sold 500 paintings and brought in $15,000. Almost every dollar of the money has gone to charities.

When Arsh was a little boy, his parents introduced many activities to him. The boy, however, was ________ in none of them. Things changed when he got a watercolor set (水彩套装) for his eighth birthday. Arsh began to spend all his free time drawing. “That was how I started painting,” he said.

Soon, Arsh finished many paintings. They took up a lot of ________ in his room and he didn’t know where to put them. The boy decided to give them away to his friends. Around the same time, Arsh visited an old people’s home. The experience made him ________selling his artworks to help other people.

And so he began his fundraising (募捐) project. He ________ his paintings at local art shows, restaurants and libraries, as well as on the Internet. Small pieces sold for $10 each. Larger ones sold for more than $800 each.

“He is an amazing boy,” Jolene Schaver, one of Arsh’s neighbors, said ________. “It’s hard to believe that this is being done by a child.” The woman has five of Arsh’s paintings hanging in her home.

Arsh has a gift for art, but it is his big ________ that is a real gift for others. What he really cares about is people around him.

“Mom, my dancing shoes are too small!”

“Again?”

“Again!” It was one day about five years ago. We asked our mom for new dancing shoes. Our     1     had grown.

“Didn’t I just buy you shoes two months ago?” Mom said as she walked     2     into our room. She emptied everywhere to search our shoes. And guess what she found! There were countless bags of old dancing shoes and more than 100 costumes (演出服). We     3     in our room and thought about what to do with them. Maybe there were some people who needed these shoes and costumes. So we made a     4     to collect used costumes and shoes and to give them to dancers in need. Why did we want to do this? Well, my sister and I both thought we were much     5     than some kids. We had danced for ten years and had been able to take lessons from really great teachers. We were born in a family that could afford     6     what we needed. Many kids lave to dance, but not everyone is as lucky as     7    . Many young dancers cannot afford new shoes or costumes as they grow.
