1 . After his Master Chef Junior run, 12-year-old Evan Robinson is using his kitchen skills to raise money for Puerto Rico(波多黎各). The TV show winner wanted to offer help after hurricanes(飓风)hit the country last September.
I’ve been seeing, all over the news, people lived too hard,”Evan said.“They can’t get fresh water, electricity. They can’t get really anything. I know I’m just a kid, but I think if a lot of people do something, a lot of things will get better.”
He raises money by baking and taking online orders for homemade pies. He started cooking on a recent Friday night. By the next Sunday evening, he had filled orders for 420 pies—roasted chicken, cheeseburger and vegetarian—getting $18 for six pies and $30 for a dozen.
For Evan’s out-of-town friends and supporters, he has also set up a crowdfunding(众筹)page. Through it, he’s already raised $1,500 in“virtual(虚拟的)pies”. He said fruit pies are up next.
His mom, Veronica Robinson, is in charge of delivering the pies around the city.“We’ve never done anything like this before,”she said.“But it’s a great idea, so I want to help him.”
His baking will continue as well. This is because he heard on the news that it would take Puerto Rico years, maybe even 10 years, to recover(恢复)from the hurricanes.
It’s not an easy job, especially for a kid with homework and Boy Scouts and friendships to tend to. But he doesn’t seem worried.“It’s what we’re supposed to do,”he said.“I’m a human. They’re humans. Why shouldn’t help them?”

4 . Every year, the town of Verona, where the well-known love story Romeo and Juliet took place, receives thousands of letters to Juliet. These letters are written in different languages and sent from all over the world.

The tradition of sending letters to Juliet dates back to centuries ago. At first, people left notes on a local landmark said to be Juliet’s tomb(坟墓). Later, they started to send letters to the town.

To deal with these letters, the Juliet Club was set up in 1972.

The staff of the Juliet Club are volunteers who call themselves “Juliet’s secretary.” They can be students, couples and even grandmothers. They can read letters in many languages.

These people take their work seriously. They use their own experiences to reply. When there is a letter difficult to reply to, they will discuss it with each other to give the best answer. Thanks to them, every letter is read, translated and answered by hand in the name of Juliet.

The Juliet Club has been dealing with Juliet’s letters for more than 40 years. You can read some of the letters on the club’s official website. You can also write your own letters. Here is the address:

5 . Chris is not a traditional explorer(探险者)- he usually works in an office for a large organization. Yet his job can sometimes be just as exciting and dangerous as being an explorer.
Chris works for MSF, an organization also known as Doctors Without Borders (无国界医生). MSF sends trained doctors all over the world to help people after a war or a disaster. Chris is a doctor from France who has travelled to many places to organize programmes that help people.
At the moment, there are over 27,000 trained medical staff taking part in MSF projects and tasks. The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF. They need to be prepared to go almost anywhere in the world and, of course, they should expect difficult conditions. Doctors with experience in tropical(热带的)diseases are especially useful because most of MSF’s work is in Africa. When MSF accepts a doctor for a task, he has to go for at least six months. When doctors have completed a few tasks, they might be sent on an emergency task following a disaster, such as an earthquake.
But why would a doctor leave a comfortable life and a good salary to join MSF? According to Chris, the experience you gain is a great help in your career. Besides, just like the explorers of the past, you need to keep an open mind and learn to mix well with the people you meet. Most importantly, at the end of each task, you have made a real difference to people’s lives.

6 . One morning, a blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said, “I am blind, please help me.”
There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took out a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words on it. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by could see the words.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Are you the one who changed my sign in the morning? What did you write? ”
The man said, “I only wrote the truth, I said what you said, but in a different way. ”
What he had written was, “ Today is a beautiful day, but I cannot see it.”
Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?
Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat. The second sign told people that they were able to enjoy the beauty of the day, but the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind.
The first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind.
There are at least two lessons we can learn from this story.
The first is: Treasure(珍惜)what you have. Someone else has less. Try your best to help those who need your help.
The second is: Be creative(有创造力的). Think differently. There is always a better way!

8 .        That cold January night, it seemed I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theater. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away any possible robbers(抢劫犯). Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck(垃圾车) pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eyes. “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.
