1 . I get to know a poor lady. Her name is Rose. She has no kids and lives alone. When I go to visit her, I always take Rose some coffee and food. One day she asks me to have lunch together with her. We walk from my workplace to a little restaurant.
On the way, I begin to worry: I know she has no money, but if (如果) I pay for the lunch, I am afraid I will make her feel bad. There are many people in the restaurant and they look very happy. Rose tells me to sit and drink coffee by the window. Then she goes to work in the kitchen. After about 20 minutes she comes out and sits with me. She just pays for one meal and we start to enjoy the delicious food together.
She tells me that people can work for a meal if they have no money in the restaurant, and people will get a free meal if they can’t work. And the workers in the restaurant are all volunteers (志愿者).
I still remember the beautiful afternoon that I had with Rose. I’m still thinking that life can not be easy to us, but we can still do something for our friends and neighbors (邻居).

7 . One Sunday afternoon, my father and I were waiting to buy tickets for the circus (马戏表演). Finally, there was only one family between the ticket office and us. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children talked excitedly about the circus show. It was clearly (显然地) a very important day for them. The father and mother were also very happy.
The ticket woman asked the man how many tickets he wanted. The man answered, “Eight children’s tickets and two adults’ (成人的) tickets.”
The ticket woman told him the price.
There was no longer a smile on the man’s face. He quietly asked, “How much did you say?”
The ticket woman again told him the price.
It seemed that he didn’t have enough money. But how could he tell his kids the bad news?
Seeing what was happening, my father took out a $20 note (纸币) and dropped it on the ground. (We were not rich ourselves at all!) He then said to the man, “Excuse me, sir, you dropped this.”
The man understood my father was helping him. He picked up the note, looked into my father’s eyes, and said, “Thank you. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
Although my father and I didn’t go to the circus that day, we were very happy.

10 . One day in February 2020, Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan received a 75-year -old COVID-19 patient. The patient was hearing-impaired(有听力障碍的) and couldn’t write. It was hard for medical workers to communicate with her. Chen Xin, a 20 -year-old sign language interpreter(手语翻译) from Nanjing, offered to help—he “talked” with her in a video call.
Chen is a college student. In 2017, he made some hearing-impaired friends and began to learn sign language. Months later he took an exam and became a sign language interpreter.
COVID-19 has brought hearing-impaired people even more challenges. It’s hard for them to get new information quickly and they don’t always know how to express new words, such as “COVID-19” and “Delta variant(德尔塔变异毒株)”. ________ In July, 2021, when the Delta variant came to Nanjing, Chen recorded a video with sign language. He explained what the variant is as well as how to protect themselves. He talked with professionals and decided on the sign language of “Delta variant”.
Chen has been asking for more sign language interpreters to join him. In September he built a volunteer studio(工作室) with the help of his college. It now has more than 40 members. They are making more sign language videos to explain COVID-19. They also offer free services and organize meetings for more hearing-impaired people.
Talking about his experience, Chen said he was happy to help. “I want to make things easier for hearing- impaired friends, especially during this difficult time,” he said.
