Volunteers from 10 universities in Xi’an went to Xiushidu Primary School in Shanxi Province, to care for left-behind children two weeks ago. “ Left-behind children ” refers to children whose parents have moved to work and live in cities.
Xiushidu Primary School has more than 500 students and about 350 are left-behind children. Most students live in school and go home once a month. Every weekend, their teachers play games with them to make sure that children do not get lonely.
This was the first time that over 30 volunteers had come to Xiushidu Primary School. They were divided into five groups. The volunteers not only did playground activities with the students but also taught them music and art.

“It is a model to solve the problem of left-behind children,” said Liu Wenkui, secretary of the foundation The “substitute mothers” will do parents’ job, finding out what the children need and helping them with problems. Each substitute mother will take care of about 300 to 500 children. There will be a “children’s home” in each village to be the mother’s office and children’s playing space. Their job is to provide quick service and discover the children's problems.
The program hopes to hire women aged 19 to 55 years old from the villages. “We want to hire full-time ‘mothers’ to make sure they won’t think about other work,” Liu said. “We want local women because they understand local languages and cultures.” The program in Sichuan is an experiment, and Liu said, “If it is a successful model, we will start it in the whole country. ”
“If parents are forced to leave home to earn a living and unable to take their children with them we are looking for a transitional(过渡的) way to solve the problem,” he added.

5 . The day was Thankful Thursday. It’s a weekly tradition that my two little girls and I began years ago. We always go out in the world and do charity(慈善) work. Last Thursday, we were going to buy lunch for the beggars (乞丐) in the street. I ordered 15 lunches from McDonald’s and decided to hand them out.
We enjoyed what we saw in the street: a surprised and happy person holding up his lunch bag. Then we noticed a small old woman asking for food. We handed her our final lunch bag. As we got into the car, she started to speak to us. “No one has ever done anything like this for me before,” she said with a smile. “Well, I’m glad that we were the first,” I replied. “So, when will you eat your lunch?” I asked. She just looked at me with her huge, tired brown eyes and said, “Oh, honey, I’m not going to eat this lunch. You see, I have a little girl. I usually can’t afford to buy her the food she enjoys. But tonight she will be so happy!”
I don’t know if the woman noticed the tears(泪水) in my eyes. I have questioned many times whether our acts of kindness were too small to make a difference. Yet at that moment, I realized the truth of Mother Teresa’s words: “We cannot do great things—only small things with great love.”

In many British schools, the pupils usually wear their school uniforms to school on weekdays. However, recently the students at LVS Ascot Junior School in England wore something quite different. What they wore was what people wear when they go to bed---pajamas(睡衣). They did this not only for fun, but for a local charity called Christopher’s Smile.
Christopher’s Smile was set up in 2008 by Karen and Kevin Capel whose only son Christopher died of cancer at a young age. Christopher’s Smile aims to raise money to fund development of new drugs to treat childhood cancers. Since then, the charity has raised a lot of money and gotten more and more volunteers.
The students of Grade 6 at LVS Ascot Junior School organized the event Pajama Day to support Christopher’s Smile. “We wanted to raise money for our charity in a way that the whole school could join in it, so each pupil paid 1 pound to wear his or her pajama to school on Pajama Day.” said a young organizer.
Both the students and their teachers took part in the event with great interest. Together they not only raised some money, but also had a good time.
