2 . Ana wanted to become a village nurse with Leta. She had to teach herself by reading her first aid book.
When Ana was reading, she saw some children playing on the road, which connected her village to the next one eight kilometers away. Rafi, a village boy, had gotten a donkey, and some kids had gathered around to see it. Rafi was always doing something to get attention. Like now: he was trying to stand on the animal’s back.
She had just turned away when she heard a few shouts. Rafi lay on the ground nearby. The donkey stood several meters away. Ana ran to the place where Rafi was lying. She dropped to her knees on the road. Ana saw that one of his legs was broken!
She remembered what the first aid book said about broken legs: If there is no ambulance (救护车), stabilize (使固定) the bone before moving the victim. There certainly wouldn’t be an ambulance here. Ana looked back at the road. The other kids were still standing there, watching.
“Vin!” Ana called out to one of the boys. “Go for Rafi’s mom, and find someone with a truck.” She turned to the others. “Give me your shirts. I need something to tie his leg with.” When Ana finished that, she looked up and saw Rafi’s mom watching. Behind her was a neighbor in a pickup truck.
The next day, Leta came to Ana’s home. “I heard what you did,” Leta said. “Some volunteer doctors are coming here tomorrow to help the people here. We need some hands. Can you help?”

The program started when Jessica asked the same question for students in all grades: “What would you say to encourage or help someone else?” Jessica recorded (录制) their answers and put the recordings into different parts. Later, she moved them to a phone hotline you could call at 707-998-8410.

By pressing 2, you can hear words of encouragement such as “The world is a better place with you in it.” And pressing 3 shows you the laughter from children—a sound that is certain to bring a smile to anyone’s face.
The students also made posters for the hotline and put them up around their town. Soon, the hotline became really popular on the Internet. Last August, Chongqing had a very hard time. It experienced a record-breaking heat and the highest temperatures on most days were above 40℃. Because of the awfully hot and dry weather, large forest fires happened in many parts of the city.
Firefighters made great efforts to bring the fires under control, but they were not the only heroes. In Beibei District, a large number of motorcyclists (摩托车手) played an important role and won widespread praise.
Li Xin is the owner of a motorcycle club in Beibei District. After hearing the government’s call for volunteers, he organized a team of 15 club members to support the firefighting in Xiema Town, the center of the local fires. It is my honor and duty to guard my hometown,” he said.
The team members took turns using nine motorcycles to carry food, water and whatever firefighters needed to deal with the fire. They also helped transport people to certain places.
There were hundreds of motorcyclists like Li. Most of them were in their twenties. They rode on the poor mountain roads, each carrying a large basket full of supplies on their back. Some fell and got hurt even though they had the best motorcycle skills. Some got heatstroke (中暑) after working long hours continuously. They didn’t have much time for sleep, but they were in high spirits at all times.
Besides riding on the difficult roads, the motorcyclists also helped cut wood and put out fires. They stayed and helped till the fires were finally put out.

8 . I am Canadian. Our family moved to Australia when I was 6 years old. We are lucky to be able to travel to Canada to visit our relatives each year. We often make this trip during winter months.
In Canada, the winter is very cold, and every person in this country must have a warm jacket to get through the cold season. At the end of each visit, before our flight flies back to Australia, we have a tradition of walking through the streets with our winter coats, gloves and hats in our hands to look for, someone in need of warm clothes. After all, we won’t need them when we return to Australia, and we want to help more people. We have kept doing this for more than 20 years since we moved there.
During our last trip, as we walked through the cold streets, we saw an old woman shivering (发抖) in a small coat, politely begging for money and food. We felt quite sad at that time. Finally we gave her 20 dollars. Then, I took my husband’s coat, wrapped it around her, and gave her a big warm hug. Tears ran down both our faces.
I hope our small behavior of kindness will help the old woman during this hard time on her life journey. I’ll never forget her. After all, we are both daughters or mothers.

There’s a school in Buchen Village, Anhui Province. The only teacher here is a 95-year-old man, Ye Lianping. He began to teach left-behind children (留守儿童) without getting any money in 2000.
Teaching is always an important part of Ye’s life. To help children learn more about the outside world and have their own dreams, he began to offer (提供) students English classes. He first set up a classroom in his own house. Later, the local government (当地政府) gave him another two classrooms, where more children can get education.
Ye lives a very simple life. As he has no children of his own, he lives with his wife in a small house built 30 years ago. Children far away from home can also spend the night there. Over the past years, Ye has helped more than 2,000 children, and Yang Hongyan is one of them. “Without Grandpa Ye’s help, I may have stopped learning.” says Yang.
“It must be a lie to say that I’m not tired. But I think the meaning of life is doing something for others, and that’s the most important thing of life.” says Ye. People called him “the candlelight of the village, burning forever”. But he said, “I’m just a firefly (萤火虫), a little firefly (making little light), not as much light as a candlelight can give.”
