When I was young, I wasn’t outgoing and was never interested in volunteering. I never     1     I could do volunteer work. But my opinion of volunteering changed when I started university.

As an English major, I volunteered in several schools to teach children English. Later, I realized I got nothing new out of my volunteer service, so I made a     2     to move out of my comfort zone (舒适区). I accepted invitations to volunteer at different festivals     3     I thought these chances could improve my communication skills.

The most important volunteering chance for me came in the summer of 2019. It became clear to me that volunteering locally was not     4    . It was time for me to try volunteering     5    . In June last year, a video of a deliveryman (快递员) caught lots of attention online. He was     1     off a high bridge to save a woman in the water.

In the video, a man with a black T-shirt and black trousers was at Xixing Bridge. It is a 12-meter-high bridge     2     Qiantang River. A woman fell into the river and he swam to the woman     3     and tried to keep her mouth out of water. Luckily, a while later, a boat came to pick them up successfully.

Peng Qinglin was doing his job when he heard someone call for help. He took off (脱下) his     4     and put down his phone. The bridge was so high that he was quite     5     at first, but he had to help the woman. Sadly, he hurt     6     foot badly. So he needed to stay in the     7     for a week to get well. In the hospital, Peng said he was worried about being late with the delivery. However, the customer (顾客) didn’t feel angry     8     she knew what happened. His delivery company (公司)     9     him 50,000 yuan and a chance to study in college for free.

Grace is an eight-year-old American girl. When she heard many     1     in Texas lost everything because of Hurricane (飓风) Harvey, she made a     2    .

She decided to give away some toys to a child. “If the child has toys to play with, she will     6     feel less lonely,” Grace said to     7    .

Then she started putting her toys in a bag. Grace     8     something on a piece of paper and put it into the bag. “Dear little girl, are you     9     about getting these toys? I hope they can be your close friends. Have fun with them and take good care of them.”

Grace’s mom was very moved by her daughter. She said Grace could feel what the people in Texas were experiencing though the little girl didn’t experience a hurricane. “She     10     more than an eight-year-old child really does.” said the mom.

Nancy is a very kind girl. She is always ready to help people who are in     1    . Now she is studying in the university of Texas. At the same time she     2     to teach at Heart House in her free time. Heart House is a local after-school program for children. It     3     some more education for those children who are not doing well in their studies.

Nancy goes to Heart House to teach the children     4     a week. She has also made a website (网站) for Heart House. In this way, more people have more chances (机会) to learn     5     Heart House and help the children there. Because of Nancy’s website, every week 125 volunteers     6     about four hours helping the children at Heart House now. “Without Nancy’s website, Heart House would never be     7     to have enough volunteers. Her     8     is very useful,” Mr. Dervish says. He runs the program and speaks highly of Nancy. “I feel happy to teach those kids how to study. The     9     thing is that I can also learn a lot from them. I won’t give up volunteering after graduation (毕业) and I hope to     10     teaching kids who need help”, Nancy says.

Amanda is a very kind girl. She is always     1     to help people who are in trouble. Now Amanda is     2     in the University of Texas. At the same time, she is volunteering to teach at Heart House in her     3     time. Heart House is a local after-school program for children. Anand is from a city in the south of India. In 2017, he was     1     as an engineer at a car factory.

One day that year, Anand and his friends passed by a dirty lake (湖泊). All of a sudden, he fell over and     2     into the lake. When his friends pulled him up, he remembered that this lake used to     3     very clean several years ago. He wondered, “    4     is it so dirty now?”

Anand planned to do something about it. He did a lot of study. Then, he found that this lake had once been part of a big network (网状系统) lakes. People built them to provide water     5     farmland (农田) about 1, 500 years ago.

Anand spent four months studying the network. And all this work won him a lot of prize money from     6     factory.

What’s next? Get people to join him! Luckily, Anand found     7     of volunteers. They began to work right away. By clearing the lake of waste, they opened up its blocked waterways (堵塞的水道). After that, they grew many plants around the lake. Six months     8    , when Anand boated on the clean lake, he found that everything was getting better and better. So he was filled with     9    .

Finally, Anand left his job to set up an organization to clean up more lakes for free. So far, it has cleaned up 35 lakes in the city. Anand’s work has not only made a big     10     to the environment, but also offered people clean water for farming and drinking. Anand really did a good job.
