1 . Wang Ping is a cleaner. He has worked in a park for 5 years. He is also a good father. Nothing can make him     1    (happy) than playing with his little daughter in his free time.

Last Tuesday afternoon, while he was cleaning the park, suddenly, he heard a woman crying for help. He ran up quickly     2     (see) what happened. The woman’s 15-month-old baby girl choked (窒息) on a small piece of pear and her face turned purple. Wang Ping tried his best and saved the baby’s life. In his mind, helping others     9     (be) just helping himself. He hopes more people can volunteer to help the people     10     need if possible.

Lin is a very kind girl. She is always ready to help people who are     1     trouble. Now Lin is studying at the University of Texas. At the same time, she volunteers     2     (teach) at Heart House in her free time. Heart House is a local after-school study program for children. It provides some extra     3     (educate) for children who are not doing     4     (good) in school. Lin goes to Heart House to teach the children     5     (two) a week. She also makes a website for Heart House. In this way, people will learn more     6     Heart House and better help the children there.     7     (thank) to Lin’s website, every week 125 volunteers spend two hours helping the children at Heart House now. “    8     Lin’s website, Heart House would never be able to have enough volunteers,” the program leader says. “I feel happy to teach those kids     9     to study. I won’t give up     10     (volunteer).

I hope to continue teaching kids who need help,” Lin says.

A group of rubbish collectors in Turkey are recycling the books that people have     1     (扔) away. They have already created a mobile library. And there are now over 9,000 books, which are     2     (分成) into 20 kinds, including medical care, politics, literature, history, healthy living and so on. The library is inside a     3     (卡车) that tours schools in the countryside. They hope to create a greater passion or reading books in children,     4     (尤其) in the age of mobile phones and computers. Many schools do not have a reading room or their     5     (自己的) library.

The library has got lots of attention in Turkey. People from all over Turkey are     6     (送) their old books to the library. A     7     (女士) working at the mobile library said, “The interest is growing. Each day we nave guests coming here to     8     (借) books or have a quiet time to read.” The     9     (部门负责人) of the library said, “We have books here for kids aged from four to ten, and also books for older children, like world classics and     10     (诗). We hope that it will develop their love for books.”

I volunteered for four weeks in a children’s home in Kathmandu. After a long journey, I arrived at the orphanage (孤儿院) and saw the children.

It was an excellent thing     1     get to know them and cheer them up. The orphanage became my home and the children were so thankful to the volunteers who care     2     them. They were not sad at all     3     the place was poor and there were lots of difficulties.

Volunteers help them practice English and guide them in doing homework. They     4     all excited when I was playing games with them. I realized what I did for them surely made     5     difference to the children and would also change their lives. A volunteer can bring new information, education and ideas to the children, which can open their eyes to the world.

Zhao Yafu is an old agricultural (农业的) researcher in Jiangsu Province. He spends most of the year working     1     the fields.

Born in 1941, Zhao’s childhood dream was to become     2     news reporter. When he was at college, Zhao saw how hard lives were in the countryside,     3     he decided to do something to help. He began to teach agricultural science to the     4     (farm) in a primary school in the village. “The villagers needed someone to help     5     (they) change their minds and learn new techniques (技术),” Zhao said.

Zhao kept on     6     (encourage) the farmers to use the new techniques and to plant new kinds of rice, which brought in a lot of money. As time went by, more new houses and roads     7     (build) in the village. And the villagers came to understand that Zhao     8     (true) wanted to help them.

Besides working in Jiangsu, Zhao and his team are also active in western China. Since 2013, they     9     (help) many farmers in western China become rich.

“I saw how poor villagers used to be, and I also see how they have changed over the years. I     10     (continue) with my work if my health is not too bad,” said Zhao.

At 8 o’clock yesterday, No. 2 bus     1     (go) along the road when the driver saw an old man       2     (lie) on the road. The driver stopped the bus without     3     (think) twice. He got off and     4     (know) the old man had a heart       5     (problem) and should     6     (go) to the hospital at once. He told the     7     (passenger) he must take the man to the hospital. He expected all the passengers     8     (get) off and wait the next bus. But to       9     (he) surprise, all the people agreed     10     (go) with him. Thanks to the driver, he only thought about     11     (save) a life. At last, the doctor saved the old man in time.

7 . Our class will organize some voluntary work next week. Lucy, Lily and I are going to visit the sick children in     1     (child) Hospital. The children there are now suffering     2     serious illness. We will teach them to sing in order to make them     3     (happy). I think singing can help them express their feelings —their pain, their joy and their     4     (sad). Ben, Alan and Jack plan     5     (take) part in the money-raising activity. The Small Friends Pet Shelter was started by a group of high school students and their parents. When they started to see many pets     1     were left behind after their families moved away, they found their own ways to help out.

Today, there     2     about 70 cats, 50 dogs, 3 rabbits, and a few turtles living at the shelter. The young people work hard to keep the place clean, take care     3     the animals in the shelter, and help the animals to find new owners. It is hard work, but the young people working at the shelter think it is worth it.
