1 .
Zhang Li

If I could make some rules for my family, the most important one would be to have all my family members do housework together. My mother usually does all the housework. It’s unfair. My father and mother can take turns cooking. I’ll wash dishes. And on weekends, we can clean the house together.

Zhao Zhao

My rule is that we should communicate with each other more. My parents often work until midnight and are very tired. But they usually play with their iPads or cellphones when they are relaxing. I think we should talk with each other for a while instead of playing with electronic devices (电子产品).

An Qi

I want to set some rules for my father. To stay fit, he should eat breakfast, exercise every day and stop smoking. He always watches TV for a long time and doesn’t read books. So I want him to only watch TV for one hour every day. Instead, he can read a book, and we can discuss it together every week.

Li Yun

I want to set a rule for my family that we have to go out at least once a week together. I find that we have little time for one another. 3 . I LOVE FOOTBALL. I started playing when I was nine years old, and football got me through difficult periods. It helps make me who I am today. And even though I did not reach the National Football League, I sometimes think I got more from achieving that dream, without realizing it.

My romance with football started when my dad drove me, kicking and screaming, to join a league. I didn’t want to be there at first. I was naturally weak and small. Fear turned to awe (敬畏) when I met my coach, Jim Graham, a huge and strong guy. And he was really strict and old-school.

Coach Graham used to drive me hard. I remember one practice in particular. “You’re doing it all wrong, Pausch. Go back! Do it again!” I tried to do what he wanted. But it wasn’t enough. “You owe(欠) me, Pausch! You’re doing push-ups after practice.

When the practice was over, one of the assistant coaches came up to me. “Coach Graham drove you pretty hard, didn’t he?” he said.

“Yeah.”

“That’s a good thing,” the assistant told me. “When you’re doing badly and nobody says anything to you anymore, that means they’ve given up on you.”

That conversation has been with me closely my whole life. When you see yourself doing something badly and nobody’s willing to tell you anymore, that’s a bad place to be. You may not want to hear it, but those who always push you hard in your life are often the ones telling you they still love you and care about you, and want to make you better.

There’s a lot of talk these days about giving children self-respect. It’s not something you can give; it’s something they have to build. Coach Graham knew there was really only one way to teach kids how to make it stronger: You give them something they can’t do; they work hard until they find they can do it, and you just keep repeating.

When Coach Graham first got hold of me, I was a weak kid with no skills and no physical strength. But he made me realize that if I work hard enough, there will be things I can do tomorrow that I can’t do today. I really felt thankful to Coach Graham for what he had done to me, though it surely didn’t feel good at that time to do so many push-ups after practice.

根据上文内容判断正(T)误(F)
1. In the writer’s eyes, Coach Graham was strict and wise.
2. The writer believes that those who are quite strict with you actually think ill of you.
3. The writer was thankful to Graham because the coach encouraged him to do better.
4. From the passage, we can learn “Never offer to teach fish to swim”
5. Coach Graham knew the method to teach kids how to build self-respect.

7 . For many, this term is their final term at the University of Utah. There are several things those students will undoubtedly miss. I’ll be spending a term in Florida working in a hospital to get some practical training, so I won’t be in Utah for a few months. I’ m already worried about the change and I’m taking time to enjoy everything I will miss.

The first thing I’m going to miss about Utah is the sunsets. On a clear day, Utah has colorful sunsets. It’s possibly caused by pollution, but no matter what, they’re interesting and special. The second thing I’m going to miss is the dryness of the state. From what I know of Florida, it is like always walking through a cloud of thin fog. Winter in Florida is like summer in Utah, but with more rain.

I’m actually going to miss driving. In Florida, I’ll only be taking the bus. It’s going to be a short distance, and I won’t think about how fast I go or when I should turn. During my long journeys every day in Utah, I listened to audiobooks(有声读物), and they helped me with my homework and were more enjoyable than the radio or the sounds of traffic. In a word, I could always gain a lot while driving.

Lastly, I’m also going to miss the Marriott Library. It doesn’t matter where I sit; in the library, I can have great fun learning there. Having $ 2 snacks just a couple of meters away from me, a service that can print quickly without technical difficulties and the atmosphere(氛围)of hundreds of other students around me who are also working hard and getting their homework done, make the library the best place for studying. And I mustn’t forget to mention the books. I never thought a school library famous for research would have all I need to enjoy George R. R. Martin’s world of ice and fire, but it does.

1. Why is the author leaving for Florida?
A.To go for a holiday.B.To go to university.C.To have a job interview.D.To get practical experience.
2. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.The author likes the sunsets in Utah.B.The author thinks it is too dry in Utah.
C.The author hates the pollution in Utah.D.The author wishes for more cloudy days in Utah.
3. What does the author think of his driving to school in Utah?
A.It makes him lonely.B.It is highly productive.
C.It takes too much time.D.It has made him a careful man.
4. What is one reason the author likes the Marriott Library?
A.It lies near the dining hall.B.It has a pleasant learning environment.
C.It is less crowded than other libraries.D.It is famous for its collection of novels.

8 . The Face-down Generation(一代)

If you were born in the 2000s, you are called the oh-ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, world wide, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right? But what do other people think about your generation?

Some adults worry that you’ re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much. They wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family.

Other adults worry that today's youth are spoilt(溺爱)and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “ helicopter parents”. They were always there to guide and help their children with a busy program filled with homework and afterschool activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today's youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.

Does the face-down generation need a heads-up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today's teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls'rightsto go to school.

So if you 're one of the oh-ohs, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation. Chances are that you do great and laugh out loud.
