In early spring, the changing temperature usually makes a number of Chinese people uncomfortable. Cold air, bringing rain or even snow, easily tears up the warmth of the spring within a night(一夜之间).
However, with the coming of Guyu—the Grain(谷物) Rain, the blue sky and gentle winds would finally stay. Falling usually on or around April 20 every year, Guyu is the sixth of the 24 solar terms(节气). It means the beginning of a lively summer and people get busy from now on.
Sow(播种) grains
This is an important period of the growth of grains. The ancient Chinese already knew that as Guyu comes, the weather will become warm enough for sowing. The farmers usually catch the chance to plant rice, corn and beans.
Hope for safety and harvest
For those living near the sea, they will hold some ceremonies(仪式) on Guyu, hoping for safety as well as harvest during the coming fishing season.
Watch the peony(牡丹)
It’s also a great time to enjoy the peony, which is known as “the Queen of All Flowers” in Chinese culture. As a result, watching peonies becomes one of the most enjoyable activities for many. The flower is said to be the favourite of Empress(女皇) Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty, who was the only woman ruler in Chinese history.
Pick tea leaves
Tea leaves picked before Guyu are among the best tea leaves. People believe that the tea leaves picked on the day of Guyu can make eyes clear and drive away bad luck. So the habit of drinking tea at this time of year has become a tradition in some places of China.
1. When does Guyu usually come every year?2. Why is Guyu an important time for sowing grains?
3. Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.
4. List(列举) activities on Guyu according to the passage (at least two).
5. Give a proper title to the passage.
2 . There are four great inventions from ancient China.
The compass is a great gift to the world. Before it was invented, sailors had to depend on the stars to find directions. After it was invented, the oceans were open to travel.
Papermaking is one of the greatest inventions. During the Western Han Dynasty (202 B.C. ~ 9 A.D. ), paper was made in some places in China. It was developed in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 A.D. ~ 220 A.D. ) by Cai Lun. He made paper with bark(树皮), old cloth and so on.
It is said that in the third century a Chinese man wrote about how to make gunpowder(火药). At first, it was used for making fireworks(烟花). At the end of the Tang Dynasty, people began to use it in wars. The way of making it was brought to the Arab world and Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Printing was developed in 1041~1048 in the Song Dynasty. A man named Bi Sheng carved characters(字符) on pieces of clay and wood. Then he put ink on them. After the characters were printed on paper, the pieces of clay or wood could be used again. This technology then spread to Korea, Japan and Europe.

3 . Can you think of any questions you have about the natural world? By trying to find the answers to your questions, you are acting like a scientist.
Why does the sky look blue on a sunny day? Sunlight is made up of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo (靛蓝), and violet (紫色) light. The air is made up of many tiny bits (小块). Most colors in the light move directly through the air. The blue and indigo parts of the light bump into (碰撞) the bits of air. The light spreads out and makes the sky look blue. Light can make a glass of milk look blue, too.
Let’s Do It!
☆ Fill a glass partway (部分) with milk.
☆ In a dark room, shine a flashlight (手电筒) into the top of the glass of milk.
☆What happened? The glass looked blue because the bits that made up the milk took in (吸入) the red, orange, yellow, green, and violet colors but not the indigo and blue colors in the light. Instead the milk pushed the blue light to the sides.
Keep looking at the world like a scientist. Just start with a question and try to find the answer. You are sure to uncover lots of fun facts about the natural world. No matter what you want to find out next, remember to have fun. Learning about the natural world can be a lifelong (终生的) adventure.
1. You can act like a ________ by trying to find the answers about the natural world.A.violinist | B.scientist | C.policeman | D.teacher |

4 . Every morning my father buys a newspaper on his way to work. Every evening my mother looks through magazines at home. And every night, I look at the posters with photos of David Beckham and Yao Ming on my bedroom wall before I go to sleep. Can we imagine life without paper or printing?
Paper was first created about 2,000 years ago, and has been made from silk, cotton, bamboo, and since the 19th century, from wood. People learned to write words on paper to make a book. But in those days, books could only be produced one at a time by hand. As a result, they were expensive and rare. And because there weren’t many books, few people learned to read.
Then printing was invented in China. When printing was developed greatly at the beginning of the 11th century, books could be produced more quickly and cheaply. After that, knowledge and ideas spread quickly.
Today information can be received online, downloaded from the Internet rather than only found in books. And information can be kept on CD-ROMs or machines such as iPads.
Computers are already used in classrooms, and newspapers and magazines can already be read online. So will books be replaced by computers one day? No, I don’t think the Yao Ming poster on my bedroom wall will be replaced by a two-metre-high computer!
Answer the questions according to the passage.
1. When was paper first created?
2. Before the invention of printing, were books produced by hand or by machine?
3. What happened after books became cheaper?
4. According to the passage, where can information be kept?
5. Can newspapers and magazines be read online now?

After getting some information about dinosaurs from the encyclopedia (百科全书), Mary got interested in these animals. She surfed the Internet and found a lot more about dinosaurs. Here’s what she wrote in her notebook.
General information
Millions of years ago, long before there were any people, there were dinosaurs. They existed (存在) on earth for about 165 million years and suddenly died out (灭绝) 65 million years ago.
Fun facts
Size
◆The largest dinosaurs were more than 30 meters long and up to 15 meters tall.
◆The smallest dinosaurs were about the size of a chicken and had very long tails. They ate insects (昆虫).
Egg
◆Most dinosaurs were hatched (孵化) from eggs.
◆The biggest dinosaur egg ever found was the size of a football.
◆There were egg-eating dinosaurs that stole eggs from other dinosaurs’ nests (巢穴).
Brain
◆A lot of dinosaurs have big heads, but they didn’t have much brain inside. Most of the space was taken up with muscle (肌肉) and bones instead.
Tail
◆Dinosaurs that used their tails to beat their enemies had four feet and ate plants.
◆Dinosaurs that used their tails for balance (平衡) had two feet and two small arms, and they were often meat-eaters.
Discovery
◆From looking at bones, scientists can figure out (弄清楚) the shape of the dinosaur’s body.
◆There were more than 800 different kinds of dinosaurs.
Conclusion
We can only know about the lives of dinosaurs from the fossil (化石), eggs and footprints they left behind. But we still don’t know how they sounded, how they behaved, what colors they were and so on.
Oh, my God! Dinosaurs are the most mysterious animals in the world!

6 . Computers, smartphones, and other machines are the perfect servants. They always do what they are “told”. We usually “tell” them to do things by using a mouse or keyboard. But what if we could just talk to them normally and tell them what to do?
This type of technology, known as voice control or voice recognition (识别), has been shown in films and TV shows since the 1960s. The TV show Star Trek showed some spaceships which could reply to human voice commands (命令). The film 2001: A Space Odyssey showed a computer that human astronauts could talk to. It was mainly used to play chess and repair the astronauts’ spaceship.
On the other hand, real-world voice recognition is used for more everyday tasks. For example, Apple and Amazon made two pieces of voice recognition software (软件). They can be asked to do many things, such as setting alarms and playing music and so on.
One of the nice things about voice recognition is that it can be used when we’re on the go. When you’re driving a car or walking down the street, it’s not convenient or even dangerous to pick up your smartphone and type away on the keyboard. Voice recognition allows you to focus on whatever you’re doing at the moment while still doing other tasks.
Speech recognition software is also helpful to deaf people. It can be used to “listen” to spoken words and turn them into text that deaf people can read. Some speech recognition software can even hear words spoken in one language and then translate them into another language.

7 . After appearing as a special event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, Wushu, widely known as Chinese Kungfu, will make its first appearance as an official (官方的) sport at the 4th Youth Olympic Games in 2022.
It’s a long-awaited breakthrough(期待已久的突破)for the International Wushu Federation (协会) (IWF), which made applications to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2001, 2008 and 2011, but failed. The first two applications were refused at the very beginning. The third application made it to the final voting for taking part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games but missed out once again.
Over the years, both the International Wushu Federation and Chinese Wushu Association (CWA) have done a lot to make improvement with strong support from the State General Administration of Sport of China (中国体育总局). The Administration not only offers technical (技术的) support, often sending experts or teachers to help their Wushu training camps, but also generously provides a great deal of Wushu equipment (设备) for free.
Every year, many local Wushu groups are sent abroad to put on Wushu shows, trying to improve the influence of Wushu in foreign countries. Through their continuous efforts. Wushu has become widely popular across the world, especially among young Wushu fans. Studies show that, today, about 120 million people are attracted to Wushu around the world.
China got Wushu accepted as an official Olympic event successfully in January, 2020, which helps to make it more international quickly.
A total of 48 athletes from across the world will compete in four Wushu events: men’s and women’s Changquan and men’s and women’s Taijiquan.

8 . Not getting enough sleep is bad for health. Depending on the research from the scientists, people who don’t get enough sleep are less willing to socialize(社交) with others. They are simply too tired to go out.
The researchers did a small study. They tested 18 young people who had good sleep after a sleepless night. The participants watched videos of people with neutral(中性的) expressions walking towards them. When the person on the video got too “close” to them, they pushed a button to stop the video.
The participants kept the person at a distance of 60% further if they hadn’t got enough sleep. They felt that their personal space was being invaded(侵占). But when the participants got a good night’s sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them.
The result shows that the less sleep you get, the less you want to socialize with others. In turn, other people may think you strange and stay away from you. So if you want to be a more sociable(喜欢与人交往的) and popular person, sleeping well might help.

Think I Can: How to Push Yourself to Success
“Because I can” is magic. It pushes us past our comfort zones(舒适区域). It gives us a reason to do the things that we think we can’t. Here are a few ways to use this positive thinking in your own life.
Be More Active
Whether it is to go home or go to work, climb the stairs instead of taking the lift. Whether it is to go shopping or watch a film, ride a bike instead of driving a car. Break the “I’m tired” or “It is too hard” or “It is too far” cycle. Increasing your activity level will be good for you.
Try Something New
It is easy for us to make excuses for why we shouldn’t try something new. Maybe you think it is out of your comfort zone. Maybe it seems too difficult. Or maybe, it is just inconvenient(不方便的). Remember that you can try something new. It will help you to move past something bad and discover something new about yourself and possible new interests.
Increase Your Willpower(意志力)
Saying “No” to our favorites can be challenging. However, developing strong willpower, whether it is in response(反应)to our favorite chocolate cake or to over shopping, is something that we can all benefit from. Next time you want to do something you might regret, you have the will power to say “No”.
Speak Up
Often, we meet something that troubles us or makes us unhappy. We have a voice “because I can” in our minds. Talking with your loved ones, such as your parents and friends about how you feel, what you need and what you are thinking about can help you get on well with them and form deeper relationships.

Do you like reading? It is very important for us to learn or study through reading. But now many students say they don’t have enough time to read. So we need some skills to help read more in less time while we are doing some reading in class. Here are two skills that I think are very good.
Preview(预读)—if your article is long as well as difficult, such as long magazine articles or science reports, previewing is very useful for you to get a general idea.
Here is how to preview.
●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Of course you can’t get all the details by previewing. It tells you not to spend time on things you don’t really want or need to read.
Skim(浏览)—if your article is short and simple, like popular magazines or the sports of your daily paper, skimming is a good way to get a main idea. Here’s how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep across each line.
●Pick up only a few key words in each line
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same passage, but perhaps we’ll get the idea of what it’s all about.
I wish all of us could read more books and enjoy reading every day!
