1 . Hi, I am Guo Peng. I am a middle school student. My school is a very beautiful place. My school has a big library. It’s on the first floor of the classroom building (教学楼). There are many books in it. It has books of all subjects. It also has a lot of storybooks and newspapers. Our classrooms are from the second to fifth floors.

In the library, there are rows (排) of tables and chairs. We can sit there to read books. It looks very clean. And books are kept in good order. It’s easy for students to find the books.

Students of all classes can visit the library. We all have library cards. Before going into the library, we must show our cards. So we have to take it every day. We can take one book at a time from the school library. We must give back the book in a week. Or we can’t borrow (借) books next time.

Our library teacher is a nice woman. She is friendly to all students. We all like her. She always helps us find books. Sometimes we ask her some questions about books. She is always happy to answer these questions.

I like reading books. Every day I go to the library to read books. I love to visit my school library. It’s a good place to read and study.

According to the latest rules, when you go to a supermarket or visit another city, you don’t need to show the results of nucleic acid tests (核酸检测). But, if you go to places such as old people’s homes and hospitals, the nucleic acid tests are still needed. This makes it easier for people to travel. But this can also make people catch the virus (病毒) easily. What should we do if we have COVID-19?

Don’t worry too much

The virus isn’t as strong as before. You might have a fever or a cough. It can feel like a cold or the flu.

If you are not badly ill, you can stay at home.

● Open the windows for over 30 minutes every day.

● Disinfect (消毒) things you touch in time.

● Check your temperature twice a day in the morning and evening.

● Take some medicine if you have a fever or a cough.

● Take two virus tests in more than 24 hours. If the results are negative (阴性的), you can leave your room.

Go to a hospital if you ...

● Have a fever of more than 38.5 ℃ for over two or three days.

● Feel sick and don’t want to eat anything.

● Find it hard to breathe(呼吸).

Drink more water and increase fruits and vegetables in your diet. Keep a regular (规律的) bedtime and get enough rest and sleep. In this way, you can defeat (打败) the virus quickly.

3 . We have some interesting and fun things this term. On August 12th, we have a school trip with our teachers. On September 10th, we have a party to celebrate (庆祝) the Teachers’ Day. October is a great month. We have an art festival on October 1st. It is the National Day (国庆节). We have a soccer game on October 15th. School Day is on November 6th. Your parents can come to the school. Parents and students can play games together at school on School Day. We have a book sale in the school library on November 21st. And we have an English party on January 1st. It’s New Year’s Day. It’s a really busy term. Have a good time!

5 . Many students have clear ideas about what jobs they would like to have when they grow up. We think boys and girls choose jobs differently. To find out how differently they choose their jobs, we did a survey in New Hope Middle School. The following shows the result of the survey.

6 . The 2022 FIFA World Cup took place from November 20th to December 18th in the Middle Eastern nation of Qatar. It was the first World Cup held in the Arab world. Normally, the World Cup games take place within the months of May or July. However, because of the hot summer weather in Qatar, the decision was made to move it to the end of autumn.

Although the Chinese national football team didn’t play, Chinese products were shining on the stage (平台) of the world football event. Lusail Stadium, the main venue (会场) for this year’s World Cup, was built together by our Chinese Railway Company. It is the first time China has built a World Cup venue. It held the final on December 18th. What’s more, China-made products, including the national flags of the top 32 teams, trumpets and whistles (哨子) for cheering, soccer balls, scarves were well shown at the event, making it an excellent stage to show Chinese production.

“Without doubt, the popularity of China-made products has risen.” Song Xiangqing, vice president (副主席) of the Government Management Research Institute of Beijing Normal University, told the Global Times on Friday. “It not only helps promote (推广) China’s own brands, but also increases our cultural confidence”, he added.

7 . Christmas is a Christian (基督教) holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. No one knows the exact date of Christ’s birth, but most Christians celebrate it on December 25th. On this day, many people go to church, they can take part in special religious (宗教的) services. In Britain, Christmas dinner is eaten at noon. During the Christmas season, they also exchange gifts and decorate (装饰) their homes.

One German couple tried their best to prepare for their Christmas decorations in a different way. Thomas and Susanne decorated the outside of their house with a few simple Christmas decorations. From the outside, their house looks normal. However, the inside of the house is so different from the outside.

They started decorating in October. It took them 8 weeks to set everything up. They put 100 Christmas trees into their small house! They decorate the trees with small coloured electric lights and 16, 000 baubles (小玩意).

They did not always have so many trees. In the beginning, they had a small Christmas collection. As time went on, they grew their collection rapidly. They started decorating in early October. It’s so special that even the bathroom has a Santa Claus toilet seat.

8 . Here are the New Year’s resolutions of my four friends.

My name is Dave, and I am from the United Kingdom. I’m going to drink mere water and less cola. I’m also going to brush my teeth before breakfast and after dinner, and wash my hands before eating.

My name is Tina, and I am from the United States. I want to make more friends this year. I’m going to be nicer to the other children in my class. I’m going to be friendly to children who need friends—like someone who is shy or new to my school.

I’m Selina, and I am from the United States. I’m going to work harder this year. I’m going to do all the homework that our teachers ask us to do. If I have any problems with my subjects, I’m going to ask my teachers for help.

My name is Toby, and I am from Singapore. I’m never going to play computer games. When I feel angry or stressed, I’m going to find better ways to relax, like exercising, reading or discussing my problems with my friends.

9 . There are trains to carry people, animals or things. There are fast trains and slow ones. Some trains go through hills (穿越山洞). In big cities, like Beijing or Shanghai, the streets are usually very busy. So you can find trains under the ground (地下). People call them subways. They carry people quickly in and out of the city. Can a train run over rivers? Yes, it can. There are many bridges over the rivers. But it is not easy to build ( 建 造 )the bridges. Today’s trains have dining rooms for people. You may eat something in them on the way if you are hungry. Trains are useful to men, women and children. Many children have model trains. With the model trains they can build their own rails (轨道) and enjoy the wonderful trains.

10 . These days, for many of us, relatives (亲戚) are kind of far in our hearts. Many children don’t grow up in a family with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. They only grow up with their father and mother. Even in most families, they only have one child, not any brothers or sisters.

Many children know about their relatives not too much and they don’t care about (关心) them. This makes them feel kind of lonely (孤独的). So some of them like playing computer games and being interested in smart phones. These are not healthy.

For that, people need to keep in touch (与……保持联系) with relatives. Parents can tell their children stories about their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. And parents can also ask their children to call or write emails to them often. Having a vacation (度假) with relatives is a good idea, too.

No one can be as helpful as relatives if some bad things come to us.
