3 . Mark began to introduce the guest speaker to the listeners, but then stopped for a while. He had forgotten her name.
Barbara hid her valuable things when she went on vacation. When she came back, she couldn’t remember where she’d put them.
Perhaps you’ve had such experiences like these. Many people have. But they haven’t realized that they have a memory problem. Neither do they know a simple but important fact: Memory can be improved. If you just accept that, the following will show you how.
First, relax. If you are over worried about something, you’ll forget it. If you keep telling yourself that your memory is bad, your mind will come to believe it and you won’t remember things. When you forget something, don’t follow up with saying like “Oh, my god! I always forget things!” Such words will have a bad result on you and your memory.
But relaxing isn’t enough. To improve your memory, you’ll need to take an active role. Like your body, your memory can be made strong through exercise. Look for opportunities to exercise your memory. For example, if you’re learning a language, try to actively remember a lot of new words.
If you don’t notice things actively, you won’t remember them. So, you can make pictures of what you see in your mind every day. For example, don’t just put your keys down! If you want to find them again, make a mind picture of the place where you’re putting them.

4 . On Dec.9, 2021, three Chinese astronauts gave a science lecture 400 kilometers above Earth. Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu, who are working abroad the Tiangong space station, showed millions of students their life there. They also did some fun science experiments. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Use it or lose it
The human body grows with the pull of Earth’s gravity. But in space, our bones and muscles (肌肉) don’t need to sustain our body’s weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. NASA says that astronauts can lose up to 20 percent of their muscles after just a couple of weeks. That is dangerous because they will be too weak to work.
Astronauts have different ways to prevent this. During the lecture, Zhai introduced a special uniform Ye was wearing. It’s called a “penguin suit”. There are many elastic bands (弹力带) inside the suit. Wearing it, astronauts use their muscles to stretch the bands. This keeps their muscles strong.
________
During another experiment, Wang made a water film (膜). Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on Earth. Why?
We need to first understand the surface tension (表面张力) of water. It is like a “skin” of water. The “skin”is there because water molecules (分子) are drawn to each other. Most of the time, gravity is too strong and it breaks the “skin”. But with zero gravity in space, the “skin” stays strong and the water ball will not break.
Water in space acts differently from water on Earth in other ways. For example, water will not flow downward if you try to pour it into a cup. That’s why astronauts usually drink water through straws in sealed bags.
1. What can we learn about the lecture from space?A.It is a part of the astronauts’ daily work. | B.It took place in the International Space Station. |

5 . Overwork is one of the main reasons why so many students feel tired and stressed. There are some ways for you to learn to relax.
Such as reducing some of the jobs you do each day. So you can leave time for some relaxing and fun activities, like reading a good book, listening to a sweet music, going for a walk or taking a relaxing bath.
Secondly, get a good night’s sleep. Getting enough sleep will help you keep your body and mind in the best form. If you stay up late and need to get up early for school the next day, you may not be able to concentrate on the things you need to do.
Next exercise often and eat healthy. You’d better eat less fast food.
Another way is getting to know pleasant people. Some people are optimistic (乐观的), while others not Choose optimistic people as your friends and spend more time them. Then you’ll be as happy as them.
Next learn to keep calm when you face problems. You know that you can probably solve the problems, and it is a good way to build up your self-confidence.
Finally, have a happy attitude. Your attitude decides the way to see things. For example, is your cup half full or half empty?Learn to think more positively about the difficulties you face.

8 . Many companies today hold meetings to discuss their new plans. As people are paying more attention to the environmental problems, more companies are looking for ways to reduce their bad influence on the environment. Many of them achieve this by using the Web meeting.
The Web meeting is a technology that allows people to communicate better over the Internet. It’s an easy way of hosting and attending a meeting. Participants (参与者) don’t have to leave the office. Each of them will receive an invitation with the meeting time and date on it. When the meeting is ready to begin, they must sit before their computers.
With the Web meeting, all participants can attend the meeting at their own desks. They don’t need to drive a car to travel to and from the meeting. As a result, no fuel (燃料) is used and less time is taken up in attending a Web meeting.
Materials (材料) for the meeting are simply e-mailed to all the participants before it begins. Then participants can just read them on the screen. For the company, this not only saves the use of paper but also greatly reduces the mailing cost.
In a word, a Web meeting is a cheaper, greener, and friendlier way of hosting and attending a meeting. Companies that hold Web meetings are willing to work hard for a better environment. So they can find their working partners who have the same green ideas in a short time. In return, they develop good relationships with other companies and improve their business.

By 2016, more than 5 billion trips had been taken on the trains. By 2020, one-fifth of the country’s 150, 000-km railway network will be used by the trains. This network will link more than 80 percent of the major cities across China.

Shared bikes
China has surprised the world with how quickly shared bikes are widely used. Nowadays, bike users can simply pick up or park the bikes on the street through GPS and smartphone apps. China’s two leading bike-sharing companies, Mobike and Ofo, have been opening their overseas markets in Singapore, the UK and the USA.
Online shopping
With around 751 million Internet users, China has been the world’s largest and fastest-growing online shopping market. 10 . Yuan Longping, a great scientist, is the first person to develop a kind of hybrid rice(杂交水稻) which helps fight hunger in China.
Food was a big problem in China in the past. This was because China had 22 percent of the world’s population, but only 7 percent of its farmland. In the 1960s, China suffered(遭受) serious hunger. Millions of people died because they had no food. As an agronomy(农学) teacher, Yuan was very sad to see this. “How can I help them have enough food?” he thought. He decided to work on a kind of hybrid rice. It has a high output(产量).
At that time, other scientists didn’t think hybrid rice was worth studying. But Yuan and his team worked on it every day. They took very good care of their rice seeds. At last, in 1973, they grew a new kind of hybrid rice. This rice is strong. Farmers can grow it in many different kinds of farmland and also in bad weather. It can also fight disease. Its output was much greater than common kinds of rice. With the new kind, about 70, 000, 000 people could have food every year!
Yuan solved the food problem in China. But he is still working on rice. Before he retires, he hopes to grow rice in the sea!
