1 . Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time about eight hours after you wake up, your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.

In many parts of the world, people take naps in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer weather, in which the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any weather. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind, which is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people don’t often have problems such as heart disease.

Many working people, unluckily, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers (老板) do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap. Even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.

2 . Nowadays, WeChat has become the most popular way of communication in China. According to some people, there are many reasons for the popularity of WeChat. First of all, it is easy to use. You can start a conversation by tapping the Speak button. In addition, WeChat is a wonderful platform for people to share plenty of information. Also, using WeChat, you can have group chats, pay, play online games, send lucky money or find new friends nearby to talk to.

On the other hand, some people argue that although WeChat benefits us a lot, it has some disadvantages. When using WeChat, people may forget time and some may even lose themselves in it, which may affect their study or work. At the same time, spending too much time on the screen does affect eye health which may cause trouble. Worse still, people may give away their personal information while using it, which may lead to crime.

As far as I know, everyone should use WeChat in a right way and shouldn’t spend too much time on it. It’s very important for us to protect ourselves when we use it.

3 . You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABCs? You may like eating bananas. But do you know there are such people with the name of “banana persons”? Are these people from “another planet”? — No. They are just Chinese people like you and me.

ABC means American-born-Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside and white inside. So, a “banana person” is white inside, thinking like a westerner and yellow outside, looking like a Chinese.

Do you know why? Usually, ABCs know little about China or Chinese language. Most of them don’t speak Chinese. Also, they are not interested in Chinese politics (政治). But if ABCs can’t speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are Chinese. They are overseas (海外的) Chinese. These people may be citizens (公民) of other countries like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair. But they are not Chinese citizens. They are not people of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C. N. Yang (杨振宁). He got the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957. But he is an American citizen.

4 . Many children like watching TV. It’s very interesting. They can see a lot and know many things about other people. They can learn over the radio, but they can learn better and more easily with TV. Why? Because they may listen to news and watch shows at home. But they can’t watch anything over the radio. TV helps to open children’s eyes. TV helps to open minds, too.

They can find better ways to do things. Many children watch TV only on Saturday and Sunday evening. They are very busy. But a few children watch TV every night. They don’t go to bed early. Be careful! Watching TV too much is bad for their eyes

7 . To many students, joining social media “circles”（朋友圈）is now more important than making new friends in real life. And it’s easy. If you have a mobile phone, you can download many things such as Sina Weibo, QQ and WeChat.

“I love to check my friends’ updates（更新）. I also enjoy news and jokes shared on social media,” said Wang Wei, 14, from a middle school in Shenzhen. While enjoying these, Wang distances himself from real life. “I love playing the plane-shooting game on WeChat, but have no interest in playing chess with my classmates,” said Wang.

Deng Yunyun, 14, from Xuhui Middle School in Shanghai, said that social media has influenced their normal life. Last month, his school held a basketball match, and a student hurt his leg. Instead of giving him some help, students were busy with updating WeChat blogs about the accident. “I think they need to learn to balance their real and online lives, and what worries parents and teachers a lot is safety,” said Deng. “Many students are happy to tell their interests and personal information to their social media ‘friends’. And this could bring them danger,” said Miss Wang, a teacher from a Shenzhen middle school. “For example, the use of WeChat’s shake-shake allows users to connect to other users nearby. Also police warn about the risks of making friends in this way.”

“Be careful. Do not use the locating function（定位功能）at any moment, do not give your name, and do not post the photos of your community,” said Wang.

8 . If you move to a new school, you’ll have to worry whether or not you’ll make friends. Here are some simple suggestions which help you make new friends a lot easier.

●Try speaking to the people next to you in class. As they’re close by, it makes sense to communicate with them first.

●Have courage to speak to everyone in your class. You will probably stay with that class through your years at the new school, so it helps if you get on with them.

●If you don’t have many friends in your class, try and make new friends in your subject lessons. You can also talk with them at lunchtime and after school.

●Join a lunchtime or afterschool club. You’ll get to meet kids of all years that way.

●Ask your teacher to pair you with another pupil.

●Use your celebrity status! Since you’re the new person, you’ll have gained celebrity status, which you can use for a couple of weeks. Talk to people, remember to smile and always be open and friendly. Listen carefully to what others have to say so as to make them feel important.

As you grow older, it’s natural to make new friends and sometimes that means you grow apart from your old friends. So try and make time for all your friends. Why not introduce your different sets of friends so you can all go to the cinema or bowling together?

But what if a friendship group is pushing you out? If this is happening to you, try and ask someone you’re friendly with what is happening. If the whole group is leaving you out, try to find new people to spend time with lunchtime.

10 . The history of women in space began 60 years ago. Since then 57 women astronauts from nine different countries have flown into space.
