Many parents like setting family rules for their kids. When kids break the rules, parents will give them punishment. In fact, when you tell your kids about a new rule, you should talk with them about the price they should pay for breaking the rule—what the punishment will be.
The punishment you set should be reasonable(合理的), without violence or threat(威胁). For example, if you find your son smoking, you may limit(限制)his social activities for two weeks. You should punish your kids only in ways you have discussed before the rule is broken. A study shows that the most popular punishment is to limit kids’ TV time.
It’s understandable that you’ll be angry when rules are broken. Punishment is a way to express your anger, but it’s not a very good one. Sharing your feelings of anger, disappointment or sadness with your kids can have a better effect on them. Try to do that. When your kids know what they have done has made you angry, they will feel sorry. When they know their actions influence you greatly, they will follow the rules better.
Family rules are made to help your kids behave better. If your rules or ways of punishment make them unhappy or under a lot of pressure, are they helpful?

Have you ever seen giant pandas? The cute animals are a Chinese national treasure. They can also be Chinese ambassadors(大使) to other countries.
In the United States, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington DC, has been home to giant pandas for 50 years! On March 16,2022, celebrations began for the big anniversary(周年纪念日).
The zoo’s first pandas were Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing. In 1972, Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai gave them to the US people as gifts. Over the past 50 years, eight pandas have lived at the zoo.
The zoo workers try their best to take care of the giant pandas. As for food, the zoo grows bamboo. It also cuts bamboo from 20 places across Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. Sometimes, it even gets donations of bamboo from the public. Giant pandas also receive apples, sweet potatoes, biscuits and honey water. Sweet potatoes ere a favorite. On special days, like birthdays, the pandas have a huge cake! There are also fun activities and toys for the pandas to play with. These help the pandas stay active and smart.
The pandas bring joy to millions of US people each year. People can see them at the zoo or watch their lives online. In 1999, the National Zoo started the Giant Panda Cam program. About 40 cameras are watching them at any given time. The program has been seen more than 100 million times, according to the zoo’s website.

3 . We have to accept the truth: Sometimes, we just want to shout out loud.
For example, we all have days like this: our dog has made a mess on the floor we just cleaned, or our friend called to tell us he or she couldn’t come at the last minute when we had cooked dinner for him or her. We might be really angry but we tried to tolerate things like those. According to ancient Chinese wisdom (至理名言), we should shout in a loud voice instead of keeping quiet. In fact, it’s good for our health.
“Chinese people have passed on the practice from ancient times to now as a part of traditional medicine.” said Mrs. Li, a 60-year-old woman from Hangzhou. “My parents taught me to do this. It’s a part of our folk (民俗的) culture.”
Mrs. Li is a member of a group of people who love shouting. Each morning, she and some of her friends climb to the top of a hill and let out loud shouts before starting their daily exercise. They believe that shouting is good exercise for their lungs (肺) and it brings them a lot of fun.
“Sometimes I shout out and others shout back,” said Mrs. Gu, another shouting lover. “It makes you happy. You laugh and then you feel very comfortable.”
Dr. Peter Calafiura, an American doctor, agrees that shouting can have a positive influence on people’s health.
So, next time you start your morning run, why not try to shout out first? It will make you healthier.

Teenagers, however, have more opportunities stressed than people in any other age group. Being a teenager is hard. So when you feel stressed out, try to take the following steps the next time.
Get support.
When you need help, ask the people who care about you for help. Talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent or other relatives. They might have ways to help you solve the problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.
Don’t take it out on yourself.
Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset (沮丧的), they take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that’s not a good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Be kind to yourself and ask for the helping hand to work out the problem.
Try to solve the problem.
After you’re calm and you have support from adults and friends, it’s time to work out the problem. Even if you can’t solve it all, you can try to solve a part of it.
Be positive.
Most stress is temporary (暂时的). Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it. These steps aren’t magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time, you’ll help yourself feel better. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.

5 . These days, teenagers are heavily influenced by the media. Many of them have watched thousands of hours of TV. That’s more time than they spend with teachers at school. And we haven’t considered the hours they spend using the Internet and reading newspapers.
However, several studies have shown a serious problem: today’s teenagers lack media literary (媒体素养). In other words, they have difficulty critically thinking about the information they see. One study that was done on middle school students showed that more than 80 percent of them didn’t tell the difference between real stories and ads that looked like news.
Standford professor Kevin John teaches a class called Media Effects. He tries to help his students learn media literary. The professor gave an example that shows why media literary is important. In the example, two news stations report a snowstorm. The other focuses on kids playing in the snow. “With a news story, news stations tell you what they feel are the important details (细节). These details mostly depend on the opinions of the news director,” said John. “A person who has media literacy would realize that each story is about one side at this time. There is more going on.”
Some experts think the school is the best place to teach media literacy. Others believe everyone — from parents to reporters — should help teenagers learn the skills.
As for the best time to start learning literacy, many experts suggest the age of 12. But some basic ideas can be taught even earlier. “It’s never too early to start learning media literacy,” John said.

Many of us may know that Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia. But this will change soon. In 2019, Indonesia announced plans to move its capital from Jakarta to the province of East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. That was big news for Indonesia, as any country’s capital is obviously very important. The new capital will be named Nusantara.
The word capital comes from the Latin word caput, meaning “head”. It is no doubt the “head” of a country. The central government is located there, as well as important institutions(机构). The leaders of a country usually work and live in the capital as well.
In English-language news reports, when you read “relations between Beling and Moscow”, it actually means relations between China and Russia” That’s how important the capital is—it is a symbol of a country, showing its national power.
Therefore, it is important to choose a good place for one’s capital. In many countries, the capital is the richest city. This is because when a city becomes a major business center, it takes on a more important place on the world stage. London, for example, has been the economic (经济的) center of Britain for nearly 2, 000 years, so people naturally chose it as the capital.
Sometimes, capitals are chosen for safety reasons. For example, Brazil’s capital used to be Rio de Janeiro, which is a coastal (沿海的) city. Later the capital moved to the inland city of Brasilia, partly because coastal cities can be attacked(攻击) more easily.
In the case of Indonesia, the new capital was chosen in order to achieve balanced development in different areas. Kalimantan is an underdeveloped area. By becoming the new capital, it can expect faster economic growth.

Light comes from the sun. It also comes from flashlights, candles and streetlights. Light is important because it lets us see things. It can pass through clear objects, such as clear glass or clear plastic. But it cannot pass through objects that are not clear. Sunglasses will stop some light and protect our eyes.
Heat comes from many things. The sun makes the earth’s land, water and air warm. We get heat from burning things like wood or coal. Heat is an important energy for us. Heat makes our body and our homes warm in winter. We also use heat to cook.
Sound is a kind of energy that you can hear. Sound is made when something vibrates (振动). When you talk or sing, put your hand on the side of your neck. Then you will feel your neck vibrating. When you hit a drum, the drum and the air around it vibrate. When the vibrating air reaches your ears, you hear the sound. There are loud sounds and soft sounds. When you shout, you make a loud sound. When you speak very quietly, you make a soft sound. All sound has pitch (音高). A drum is an instrument with a low pitch. A bell is an instrument with a high pitch.
