4 . Last night, a school night, my 11-year-old son’s baseball team played a game that lasted until 9: 30. My son is having fun, getting exercise, and learning patience, teamwork and sports spirit. But the truth is that the game also influences his sleep.

As parents, we want good things for our children. We want them to be healthy both in body and in mind. To this end, we look for ways to help our kids grow and develop. Parents make bedtime routines and carry out (执行) strict rules about nighttime. 5 .

For many years, archaeologists (考古学家) have wondered why the people who built Stonehenge used huge rocks that came from more than 300 kilometers away.

Now, a team of researchers believes the rocks may have been chosen because they produce musical sounds.

Stonehenge was built during the Stone Age. Archaeologists think it was at first used as a burial ground (墓地) and temple (庙宇).

Stonehenge was made with two types of stones: sarsens (砂岩) and bluestones. Sarsens were the rocks used to build the outer circle. They were found locally.

The older, inner circle includes bluestones. These are believed to have come from a place called Carn Menyn, in the Preseli Hills in southwest Wales, about 300 kilometers away.

Recently, a team of researchers from the Royal College of Art in London went to the Preseli Hills to study the landscape (地形). They found that there were many “ringing rocks” in the area—rocks that make a musical bell—like sound when struck with a small hammerstone (石锤), or a round rock that fits easily into the hand and was used as a tool by early humans.

They think this may be the reason Stone Age people brought bluestones all the way from Wales when they built Stonehenge.

One of the researchers, Paul Devereux, said that many prehistoric (史前的) cultures around the world thought that stones that make interesting sounds were very powerful. They believed ringing rocks with echoes (回声) were the homes of spirits.

The researchers tested the bluestones at Stonehenge and found several made ringing sounds. They also found that a number of the bluestones at Stonehenge show signs of having been struck by a hammer stone. Some bluestones don’t ring. But the researchers believe they would also make sound if there were more space around them for the sound waves to travel.

1. Researchers believe the rocks were picked out because ________.
A.they produce musical sounds
B.they were found during the Stone Age
C.they were used as a burial ground and temple
D.they came from more than 300 kilometers away
2. Which is RIGHT about “ringing rocks”?
A.Ringing rocks look like bells.
B.People built the outer circle with ringing rocks.
C.People used ringing rocks as tools.
D.Ringing rocks can make a bell—like sound.
3. Stone Age people build Stonehenge with bluestones because ________.
A.they could be found locally
B.they could be struck by a hammer stone
C.they were very powerful
D.they were from Wales
4. From prehistoric cultures,we can learn that ________.
A.Wales was the home of bluestones
B.Stonehenge was the home of dead people
C.more space was needed for sound waves traveling
D.ringing rocks with echoes were the homes of spirits

You will learn English so quickly that you will even forget you are learning.
