1 .

Millions of people in China are taking part in live-streaming(直播) quiz shows after they download apps like Chongdingdahui, Huajiao Zhibo and Xigua Shipin. Different from TV quiz shows, anybody with a smartphone can take part in the shows every day, interacting(互动) with other players at the same time.

The shows have hosts to present the questions and make the show more lively by telling jokes or giving some background for the questions. Players can win prizes as small as 1 yuan and as high as more than 40,000 yuan, depending on the total amount(数量) of prize money and the number of winners.

To draw new users, the apps offer "redo cards(复活卡)" to new players, as well as to those who have invited new players to join. These cards allow players who give wrong answers an extra chance to compete on the show.

Players are enjoying turning their knowledge into a chance to win cash prizes. They have also found that they are learning a lot during the process. "I found them really attractive, as I can learn and play at the same time," said Cao Lei, a 25-year-old user player from Beijing." These are all free apps and I stand to win some money. 3 . Choosing a good job is almost as good as choosing a good life. So, choosing a job is one of the most important decisions to make in life.

For my job, there are three important things that I will think about.

The first one — that I must work in an area(领域)I Like — is most important to me. Someone once said if you find a job you enjoy, then you won’t have to work another day. The third important thing is that I would like to work in an area that would help other people. I hope to help make others better persons and bring out the best in them. It would be a most satisfying job to help young people to become the best. When I become old, I would like to look back with satisfaction that thousands of people have become better persons through my work.

I accept the idea that no one should choose a job suddenly and quickly. He should decide what he wants to be in a long run(从长远来看). Then, he should decide how he works for it. 4 . On May 17, 2019 China launched a new satellite at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center(西昌卫星发射中心). It was the forty-fifth Beidou satellite that China had sent into space.

So what is Beidou?

Beidou is a Satellite Navigation(satnav)system(卫星定位系统). It is developed by China. The first satnav system is GPS, which belongs to the United States. GPS is the world's leading satnav system. But China's Beidou has overtaken(超过)GPS in size. China is the third country in the world to have its own satnav system, after the United States and Russia. With Beidou, China no longer has to depend on foreign systems. This is very important for national safety. As of right now, over 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East are using the Beidou system.

Work on Beidou began in 1994. However, the first two Beidou satellites were not sent into space until 2000. Since then, China has launched many Beidou satellites. These satellites have set up a worldwide network. Now, China is further improving the system. It plans to launch ten more Beidou satellites. If all goes well, Beidou will be completed by the end of 2020. The completed Beidou will be more powerful than any existing(现存的)satnav system.

Beidou has brought many advantages to our lives. In Shanghai, thousands of buses have been using Beidou. When we are waiting for a bus, we can know when it is about to come. Many smart phones have also been using Beidou. "Many people say' Let me turn on my GPS. 'In fact, their phones are using Beidou, "jokes a salesperson in Beijing. 6 . What is the most important invention of all time? Is it the written word that helps us to record information? Is it the telephone that lets us talk to people from all over the world? Is it the car that let us travel at great speeds to meet others? Umberto Eco, an Italian writer, thinks it is something quite different. He says the most important invention might be right in front of your eyes. He is talking about a simple pair glasses.

Modern eye glasses were invented around 1000 years ago. They were more than just a convenient way to read. Before glasses, writers, scientists or teachers who could not see properly had to memorize everything. After about ten years of poor eyesight, they could not remember well enough and could not work. 7 . 阅读短文,然后按要求完成下列小题。

When the teacher asks a question in class, Wang Xiaobin never raises his hand and this situation is very common at middle schools. This 15-year-old boy always waits for other classmates or the teacher to give the answer. “What if my answer is wrong?” Wang asks.

Wang said only six or seven students in his class raise their hands when a question is asked. ①“I think the problem influences our studies, but I am afraid of making mistakes in front of my classmates,” he said.

8 . Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to believe or what to do. According to a report on the World Economic Forum (2016), critical thinking, creativity, and their practical application are widely accepted as the top three skills that young people need to   have in their future career.

A good critical thinker usually takes the following steps before he decides what to do. Whenever he needs to do something, he would, first of all, reason. He checks why he needs to do   it and whether he really needs to do it. Then, analyze. He tries to find out what it really is and the best way to do it. After that, evaluate. He makes sure whether he is able to do it and how to do it well. Finally, he makes the decision and takes action. Take the "Double 11" (a popular online shopping day in China) as an example. A few days before it, he checks carefully what he needs and whether he really needs them, and makes a shopping list. He goes to the online shops to compare the quality and the prices of the things that he is going to buy. He compares the shops   that sell these things. Then he checks whether he can afford them and in which shops he is going   to buy them. Although it takes him some time to make the decisions, he would not regret after the shopping.

Then what would happen if he didn't think critically before he made the decisions? After the crazy "Double 11", there were usually a lot of complaints on the Internet. There were regrets about buying more things than they needed. There were complaints about the poor quality and the prices of the things they bought. There were also complaints because they received wrong things   or simply received nothing. There were all kinds of regrets and complaints. Why so? They had not thought critically before they made the decisions.

9 . Sing the Language You’re Learning

How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this.

Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.

“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way”, said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulties learning foreign languages. On his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, “A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.”

Many language teachers know the value of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington, D.C. depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use the music. Not only does it work, but it is fun for kids.”

“Sometimes, I think if I were taught English that way, maybe I could speak much better English than now,” Hua Zhuying adds.
