1 . We all might be angry now and then. We get angry after hours and hours of homework. We may be angry at a friend’s lie or distrust.Sometimes, we feel even worse after arguing with others or showing our angry in some way. Here are some things you can do to calm yourself and control your temper (脾气) before it gets control of you.

Realize that you’re angry. When you’re angry, you notice it in your body. You feel hot and worried.Anger will often cause changes in our body, such as rapid heartbeat or breathing. If you’re not physically feeling it, you might hear it in the sound of your voice. One way to realize that you’re getting angry is to listen to the volume of your voice. Is it increasing? That’s a sign that you’re getting angry. Once you notice this, try to reduce your voice. Try not to speak too loudly. That will help you calm down.

Follow your body’s signals, safely and slowly. Take deep breaths, in and out. Ask yourself what your body wants to do. If your hands want to clench (紧握) , or you want to shout, you can try to do them safely and slowly. This will stop you from your angry thoughts.

Give yourself a time out. If you find that your friend lied to you and you feel really angry, what will you do next? Have a fight with him? I don’t think so. Walking away gives you time to calm down and collect your thoughts. This also helps you control anger and the situation. Of course, don’t just get away from the problem. Let your friend know that you just need a little private space. Then you may have a good talk with him.

When you find a proper way to realize and control your anger, there will be a happier and wiser you.

2 . After a busy day of work and play, the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for good health. During this time, the body recovers from the activities of the previous (以前的) day. The rest that you get while sleeping makes it possible for your body to prepare itself for the next day.

There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your body relaxes little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, your body moves back and forth from one level of sleep to the other.

Although your mind slows down, from time to time you will dream. Scientists who study sleep say that when you are dreaming, your eyeballs begin to move more quickly (Although your eyelids are closed). This stage of sleep is called REM, which stands for rapid eye movement.

If you have trouble falling asleep, some people suggest breathing very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will help make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion the counting sheep will put you to sleep!

3 . Pale, snowy faces; dull, lifeless eyes—I’m describing my classmates after staying awake until one, two, and sometimes even three o’clock in the morning. Most adults think this is due to late nights of studying, and sometimes this will be true. However, many students voluntarily（自发地）stay awake far past proper hours, even though they know they will regret their decision the next morning.

Staying up late is a bad cycle. For example, a student who falls asleep as the moon goes down then finds him or her unable to rise and shine with the sun in the morning. Waking up at the last possible moment, a student will rush out of the door with a stomach screaming for breakfast. Being late for class at least ten minutes, a bit of soft drink is only good for an hour or two. The student then becomes very hungry and unable to be active. Then a four-hour nap upon arriving home recharges（再充电）the student, as he or she prepares for another night of moon watching. The cycle continues.

Some students insist（坚持）they don’t need sleep. They say they get more done late, and claim（声称）their focus（聚焦）is much better in class when they are tired. However, one looks at the poor grades made by those students shows how mistaken they are. Others insist they just can’t fall asleep before midnight. Well, if they will stop drinking coffee twenty-four hours a day, and change their bodies to a more habitual bedtime, their sleep problems may soon disappear.

A body and mind can do amazing things, but only if you are wide awake and when you have refreshed yourself. A flashlight（手电筒）won’t shine with lifeless batteries（电池）, and neither can a person, if their body is always trying to make up for lost sleep. So please, teenager friends, just go to sleep. It can be a life changing decision.

7 . ①Walk or drive to work? Which way is lower in carbon（碳）? To be friendly to the environment, you may choose to walk. Have you ever tried to live a low-carbon life through your diet（日常饮食）?

②A new study from the University of Oxford has looked into the health and environmental influences of 15 foods common in western diets. Among these, plant-based（基于植物的）foods included fruits, vegetables, nuts and potatoes. It also studied animal-based foods, including red meat, chicken, milk products, eggs and fish.

③According to the study’s lead researcher, Michael Clark, “Choosing better and greener diets is one of the main ways people can improve their health and protect the environment.” That is to say, plant-based diets are much healthier for us and kinder to the environment.

④To get this result, researchers compared the influence of eating another portion（一份）of each food with the increased risk of a few illnesses. They also find out the environmental harm for each animal-based food and each plant-based food.

⑤By using this method, the study found that red meats were the most unfriendly foods to the environment. Keeping farm animals produces a large number of methane（甲烷）that keeps 30 times more heat than CO₂. As well as making the earth warmer, eating too much red meat is known to increase the risk of a few illnesses, such as heart trouble.

⑥Plant-based diets can give us the same health benefits in a much greener way. According to the study, without eating or using meat and milk products, global farmland use could be cut down by more than 75% and still feed the world.

⑦Speaking to the Guardian, Tim Benton of Chatham House said, “If we can give people reasonable official advice of what a healthy and green diet is, the world and its people would be in a much better place.”

8 . Smartphones are getting boring. The new models are either a bit faster or have better cameras, but they are basically no different from the ones already in our pockets. This is why scientists are hoping, and working for something new, something that will change our lives just as greatly as smartphones do. At the moment, the next invention might be smart glasses.

Just imagine. Instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen, all of the information you need simply appears just in front of you, in your glasses. Satellite navigation (导航) directions would appear right there on the road. And your smart glasses could guide you to the right shelf in the supermarket!

Smart glasses could also be used in industry. They could show engineers the instructions they need to fix things more quickly. A doctor could carry out a difficult operation, guided in real time by someone on the other side of the world.

This may sound impossible. But most of the technologies to invent them are already there. For example, one key technology is called AR, which can make digital 3D objects appear as if they are part of the real world. We’ve used it a lot on our video calls. Similarly, huge progress has been made in spatial audio. This is when a sound is made to give it a sense of place, like what you hear in an empty room. Some high-end earphones can already do that. Future glasses will of course need to recognize (识别) your voice to do tasks. This technology has been widely used in our daily life.

So, why aren’t we all wearing smart glasses yet? So far, no one has invented a good way to send images (映像) of our world onto glasses. However, with the rapid development of technology, smart glasses could arrive much sooner than we think.
