These spacesuits were made by China.
Since 1984, only 16 women (including Wang) around the world have ever done spacewalks. according to Global Times. But female spacewalkers are very important to space exploration(探索), said Yang Yuguang, vice chair of the Space Transportation Committee of the International Astronautically Federation.
Yang said that humans may live on other planets someday. “If we don’t let women take part in this, our efforts(努力) would be incomplete. We need to study how female bodies adjust to the space environment. That’s why Wang’s spacewalk is important,” Yang told Global Times.
Pang said that female astronauts have many advantages over their male peers(同事) in extended missions. “Women are usually more sensitive, attentive and careful in many regards, and normally are better at communicating. These traits are useful assets in extended(长期的) flights.”

Sun Ruifeng, a mother in Beijing, changed some of her plans for her 8-year-old son’s summer vacation. She looked for an English training course, but in the end, she changed it to a swimming training class.
“Due to the stricter regulations (规定) on subject-training classes, many parents like me choose sports or other projects for developing interests instead,” Sun said.
Sun’s choice is part of the result of the government’s growing efforts to lighten the academic pressure on young students.
On July 24, Chinese government introduced a guideline (意见) to ease the burden (负担) of excessive homework and off-campus training for primary and junior high school students. It lists requirements in areas such as reducing the amount and the difficulty of homework and improving the quality of education and after-class services provided by schools.
For example, homework for children below the third grade is not allowed, while homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish.
According to the guideline, training institutions (机构) cannot teach students content that is too advanced for the school curriculum. No training courses can be taught on weekends, national holidays or during winter and summer vacations.
According to Global Times, more than 75 percent of Chinese urban children, from Grade 1 to Grade 12, are enrolled in training programs. However, some training institutions take part in anxiety marketing, selling unnecessary programs that increase the burden on students.
Many parents showed their support for the new moves. “Subject learning is enough at school and we hope to improve the children’s overall quality of life during holidays,” a parent surnamed (姓) Zhou in Guangzhou told Xinhua.
However, there are also some concerns. A parent surnamed Chen in Shanxi said that although she agreed on new moves, she worried about 6 .
At present, nine cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang and Guangzhou, have been selected to carry out the guideline. It will later be rolled out nationwide.
1. Sun Ruifeng didn’t choose the swimming training class for her son at last, did she?2. What does the guideline require primary and junior high schools to do on homework?
3. How long do the children below the third grade spend on homework?
4. Who increase the burden on students by selling unnecessary programs?
5. Why did many parents show their support for the new move?
6. What might be filled in the blank in the last second paragraph?
Who can jump the highest at your school? Who has the most skips over a rope? Who’s the fastest at solving a Rubik’s Cube(魔方)? Everyone can be the best at something. Recently, Beijing 101 Middle School held an activity called “Guinness Campus” to help students find their potential(潜力).
“There are all kinds of projects you can take part in and all kinds of records for you to set,” said ninth-grader Liu, “I choose Domino Tower because I have the most confidence in this.”
Students needed to build a tower using dominoes(多米诺骨牌). Who ever built the tallest tower in one minute won. Liu set the record with 33 levels. “At first I didn’t do it well, but after learning from other people and trying over and over again,I found some ways to do it faster,” she said.
“The game requires you to be calm and patient. If you lose your temper(脾气) when the tower falls. you may lose the chance to win.”
Seventh-grader Wang set a record for the longest juggle(颠球) of a soccer ball with one foot.
He did it for 4 minutes and 34 seconds.“I started to play soccer at 5 and have been practicing juggling for three or four years, so I’m confident I can do it well,”said Wang. ”Juggling with only one foot needs good balance and stability(稳定性), which I’m good at. You also need to train hard for sure.”
When asked if he was afraid that someone else would break his record one day, Wang said he was expecting that to happen. “The charm(魅力) of Guinness Campus is that we keep reaching higher goals. If someone breaks my record next year, I’ll be even more encouraged to try harder finding more potential within me.”
1. How many kinds of projects have been mentioned in the passage?2. Why did Beijing 101 Middle School hold the “Guinness Campus”?
3. According to the passage, how can students win in the Domino Tower?

5 . Fiona McIntyre is a taxi driver in London. She tells us about her work and some of her experiences.
Q: When did you start?
I’ve been a taxi driver for about five years. Before that I was a bus driver in London, and I enjoyed it, but I wanted more freedom so I changed and started driving my taxi.
Q: Have you ever had any famous passengers?
Oh yes. I’ve had film stars, politicians, you know, lots of famous people. About a year ago, a really famous actor got in my taxi. I took him to the airport. We were stuck on the way and it took a long time to get there, so he missed his plane and failed to meet his fans. It wasn’t my fault but when he got out of the taxi, he shouted at me angrily! I said to him, “Next time, take a bus!”
Q: Have passengers ever left anything in your taxi?
Oh yes! People have left all kinds of things — a suitcase, a hat, mobile phones, of course, even a dog once! Years ago, a woman left a pair of shoes on the seat. And one time a passenger left his teeth here! Not real teeth, of course — false teeth.
And people have asked me to do some strange jobs. Once a doctor stopped me outside a hospital and asked me to take a skeleton to another hospital. Professors usually use skeletons to teach medical students, you know. And I did. But I asked him to pay first — the skeleton couldn’t pay, after all!
Q: 5
Good question. I’ve always enjoyed being a taxi driver and I don’t want to change. But of course, sometimes, it’s not great. I don’t like driving around without a passenger, but it’s better than just waiting at the airport or at a railway station. I think that’s the worst part-waiting.

Instead of studying abroad during college, more and more Chinese teenagers have chosen to do so as early as in high school. Students from China make up about 42 percent of the international students at high schools in the US, according to the latest study by the Institute of International Education. So, what is the main attraction for Chinese high school students to study abroad? What is overseas life like? We interviewed several students. Have a look!
Pan. 15. Moreau Catholic High School in San Francisco, California, US
In the future, I want to go to college in the US. Studying in high school here will help me get used to college life in the future. Also, I want to improve my English. Studying here is not easy. Instead of exams like in China, we have more projects in class. For example, we have to make a PPT about a historical figure and then design a creative item for that person, such as a painting.
Zhao. 15. Unionville High School in Toronto, Canada
For me, experience matters. It’s good to have the experience of living in another country. Unlike other international students, my parents accompanied me, which makes my life here much easier.
In Canada, I have more time to develop my interests. I can choose classes I like. However, taking the entrance examinations to high school and college at home would be great. It’s a shame that I have no chance to do that.
Zheng. 14. Walsh Jesuit High School in Cleveland, Ohio, US
I want to try different cultures and education styles. Two years ago, visited some famous universities in Boston, such as Harvard and MIT. The academic atmosphere(学术氛围) deeply impressed me. Every student seems to spare no effort on academics. I saw students doing morning exercise everywhere and I watched a football game. I found that school life in the US was colourful. So I decided to study in the US.

No one was arrested but 30 police officers, a helicopter and a dog were needed to break up the party. Police chief Christine Nixon said that Corey would have to pay for damage to neighbors’ cars and gardens. “He needs to be taught a lesson.” she said. Corey’s mother, Jo Delaney, said: “We’re a good family. I’m just horrified that this has actually happened.” |
