A night concert at Tsinghua University in Beijing attracted (吸引) more than 1,500 students and traditional Chinese music fans last weekend. The concert celebrated the university’s 110th anniversary. Fang Jinlong, a master of the traditional Chinese instrument pipa and three humanoid (人形的) robots from the Tsinghua Moja Robot Band performed several Chinese music pieces.

“I’m happy to see our performance can mix science and technology with traditional Chinese culture,” said Fang.

The band is made up of three robot musicians, Yuheng, Yaoguang and Kaiyang, named after three stars of the Big Dipper. They play three kinds of traditional Chinese instruments.

Set up in 2018, the team to develop the band is mainly made up of students, teachers and graduates from Tsinghua University. As the team’s leading scientist, Mi Haipeng is a professor of art. He joined in the research and development of a robot rock band when he studied in Japan. That experience inspired his dream to make a Chinese robot band.

Mi said the music pieces in the concert were specially tailored (专门制作) for the robots to play. The robots’ shells and stage clothes were made by 3D printing technology. According to Mi, there are more performance plans for Moja in the future, introducing new music pieces. The team, meanwhile would improve the musical sense and emotional (感情的) expression of robots, he added.

“Robots stand for science and technology, which are popular among young people. We hope this robot performance will take root in traditional Chinese music and inspire young people’s interest in our culture,” Mi said.

It is fast and pleasant. As a tourist, I have taken the service twice and I think the service
is as good as the trains I have experienced in China. Although ticket prices are not low,
the tickets always sell out very quickly.

I believe fruit from Thailand can be sent faster and cheaper to China. And the new tourism routes ( 线路) might be developed thanks to the line. More Chinese people will take the railway to Laos, and then visit Thailand.

Last week, a fire happened in Rapa Nui National Park on Chile’s Easter Island. The fire caused serious damage (损坏) to several of the large, ancient stone statues (雕像) that the island is famous for.

Easter Island is home to about 900 large stone statues. The large statues were created over 500 years ago by the Rapa Nui people. There are still many questions about how they were able to create, move, and stand up such statues.

Hundreds of stone statues are standing near the Rano Raraku volcano (火山) inside Rapa Nui National Park. The area has been named by the United Nations as an area that’s important to protect. Sadly, that’s also where the fire was the strongest.

A fire spread quickly through the Rapa Nui National Park on October 4. Park workers and firefighters worked for hours. But the fire spread easily through the grassland around the area. It wasn’t until late the next day that the fire was brought under control. The park says it didn’t have enough volunteers to fight the fire more quickly.

Experts (专家) are still examining, but it’s clear that the fire has damaged some of these stone statues.

The cause of the fire isn’t known yet. But Mr Edm unds Paoa, the mayor of Easter Island, believes the fire didn’t start naturally. “All the fires on Rapa Nui are caused by humans,” he said. He believes the island needs more government support to be able to deal with situations like this one.

The stone statues have made Easter Island a very popular tourist site. Easter Island has about 160,000 visitors a year, and it has now been closed as experts try to learn more about the damage caused by the fire.

7 . It’s reported that this year 2,300 teenagers from all over the world will spend about 10 months in US homes. At the same time about 1,300 American teenagers will go to other countries like Britain and Australia. They will learn new language and get a new understanding of the other parts of the world.

We set up a program called “Exchange for Better” to help the ones who want to be exchange students. Here is a two-way student exchange in action in our program. Fred spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In return, George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America.

Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived but after two months’ study, the language began to come back to him. As for school, he said it was quite different from that in America. When the teacher went into the classroom, students all stood up. In the USA, students learn six subjects while in Germany they took fourteen. Outside activities aren’t nearly organized.

The situation of family life was also different. The father’s words were law. All activities were around the family. Germans regard their families as the center all the time.

America was well-known as a country on wheel(车轮). Almost every family has one or two cars. However, things are quite different in Germany. People like walking rather than driving.

Meanwhile, Mike, a German boy, also has his idea about the USA. “I have to say it’s too easy to study in American schools. In Germany we did nothing but study. But in the USA, there are so many outside activities.”

1. How many students are chosen to be exchange students according to the passage?
A.2,300.B.1,300.C.3,600.D.4,000.

3. What are mentioned between Germany and USA?
①The school life   ②The history   ③Outside activities   ④The family life
A.①②③B.①②④C.①③④D.②③④
4. Which of the following sentences is correct according to the passage?
A.Germans think family is the most important.
B.Germans like to live in the center of the city.
C.Germans like driving rather than walking in life.
D.Germans think outside activities should come first.
5. Who might most possibly write this passage?

B.The exchange students.

In 2021, China introduced the “double reduction” policy. It hopes to reduce schoolwork burden (负担) on primary and junior high school students. The policy calls for reducing homework and after-school classes. According to the policy, children below the third grade will not have homework any more. It should take no more than 90 minutes for junior high school students to finish their homework. After-school training institutions (机构) are not allowed to offer extra education courses or advanced (超前的) teaching on weekends, holidays or during winter and summer vacations. How do students feel about this new policy?

“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks any more. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.”

According to Shen, students have enough time to process new knowledge now. “Our teachers are also giving us more chances to do experiments and learn from real life,” said Shen. “For example, we went to research earthworms (蚯蚓) in a field during a biology class. This is a much better way to learn things than just hitting the books.”

For 13-year-old Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. “We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama. I have joined a group called ‘leadership development’ where I can learn all kinds of skills beyond schoolwork,” said Zhang.

Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think it’s not necessarily a good thing. “Exams push me to study harder. Each exam shows my progress as well as my weak points,” Zhang said.

Shen also pointed out that when burden is lightened, self-discipline (自律) becomes the key. “Some students now spend more time having fun when homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind other students,” he said.
