1 . Tahiti is the largest island of the French Polynesia in the South Pacific (太平洋). It covers 1,045 square kilometers and has a population of 183,600. The weather there is neither too hot nor too cold. It’s always warm and humid (潮湿的).

Tahitian people are very friendly and welcoming. They welcome visitors with music, dance and flowers. The Tiare Tahiti flower, which can only be found in Tahiti, is used for greeting arriving visitors and returning family. It’s popular for women and men to wear the flowers behind their left ears.

In Tahiti, there are always a lot of things to do and to see. Around the island are hundreds of places perfect for diving (潜水). In the waters, you can meet all kinds of colorful fish and many other living things that you can’t name. Feeding sharks is another exciting popular activity. You can stand in the water behind a safe rope to watch a shark trainer hand-feed the sharks, or enjoy this fantastic scene from the boat. If you want to find a place to swim, have a sun bath or admire the beautiful sunset, Pointe Venus Lighthouse, is a great choice. It is a black sand beach.

In the evening, you can have Tahitian food, Chinese food and French-style dishes at To’ata, a square with many small restaurants. All kinds of fruit juice can be found everywhere. Some hotels in Tahiti are built above the waters. Beautiful fish swimming below can be seen through the glass floor or coffee table. They are really wonderful places to relax and refresh you.

2 . “Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell.”

This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in Rome in AD(公元) 53 wrote it.

We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?

Picture this. You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How happy do you feel?

Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave up feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they live simpler lives.

One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave(微波炉), computer or mobile phones.

The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a “trendy(赶时髦的), beer-drinking granny”, to one who cooked things.

4 . What should you do or not do when you are eating in Britain?

The British generally pay a lot of attention to good table manners. Even young children are expected to eat with knives and forks in a proper way. They eat most of their food with a knife, fork, or spoon. The foods that they don't eat with them include sandwiches and fruit.

Things you should do

If you cannot eat a certain kind of food or have some special needs, tell your host several days before the dinner party.

If you are a guest, it is polite to wait until your host starts eating or invites you to do so. It shows your respect for the host.

Always chew (咀嚼) and swallow (吞下) all the food in your mouth before taking more or taking a drink.

Always say "thank you" when served something. It shows you're grateful.

You may eat things like chicken with your fingers if you are having a picnic with friends or on very informal occasions (场合). Otherwise always use a knife and fork.

When eating a bread roll, break off a piece before you spread butter (黄油) on it. Eating it whole shows poor taste. On formal dining occasions, it is good manners to take some butter from the butter dish with your bread knife and put it on your side plate. Then spread the butter on pieces of the roll. This keeps the butter in the dish from getting full of small pieces of bread as it is passed around.

In a restaurant, it is normal to pay for your food by putting your money on the plate that the bill comes on.

7 . Artificial intelligence (人工智能) is set to benefit mankind in many ways. It will make everyday tasks easier and bring efficiency to many industries. It might be one of man's greatest inventions.

And yet, like any other technology, AI will also bring risks. In February 2018, a group of AI experts got together to discuss the possible disadvantages of AI. What they found was that "Every AI developed by the good guys is also helpful for the bad guys, too." according to Quartz.

Their biggest worry was that the bad guys could use AI for bad things. One of the areas they looked at was the use of AI to create websites that could be used to steal people's personal information. Another possibility is that AI programs could be used to hack software and break into computer secure systems (安全系统).

There are some other worries as well. It is possible that AI could be used to create fake imagines and videos. Baidu, in fact, has developed a program called Deep Voice that can "clone (克隆)" anyone's voice by studying a 3.7-second audio sample (音频样本).

Many leading people have expressed worries about AI. People like Bill Gates and Elon Musk have called for the industry to be more strictly controlled, as there are few laws right now on the use of AI.
