Now, I am a teacher, too. But different from my mother, I teach students challenging activities outdoors. And when my mother asked me the similar questions, my answer was “it’s that one child, that one special moment.”
One of those moments happened recently. I was working with a group of girls in a four-week programme. Everything went on well through the “Team” events and we were moving on to a “High” one called the Wire(钢索)walk.
In the Wire Walk, each girl had to climb up the pegs(木桩)in a tree to a wire, 8 meters high, and then walk across it. Of course, everything was safe for sure.
When I asked who would try, a few girls raised their hands, and they finished the Wire Walk with little difficulty.
But when it was Susie’s turn, it seemed that she didn’t really want to. I asked Susie if she was ready. She answered softly, “I suppose.”
Now, Susie was at the foot of the tree. She started to make the long reach for the first peg. The other girls cheered for her. Then I found Susie was becoming nervous with every step. I realized she would not go much further.
Susie was halfway up. Then she stopped and held the tree tight, looking very afraid. Her eyes were closed. With her face against the tree, she cried, “I can’t.”
The other girls sat in silence. I talked quietly to Susie, trying to relax her. I talked for a long time till I ran out of words.
“I will still be your friend no matter what, Susie!” Mary broke the silence.
To my surprise, Susie lifted her head and looked up to the wire. Then she turned to look down at Mary and smiled. Mary smiled back.

Try to read regularly. For example, read for a short time once a day. Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every Sunday. Fix (固定) a time to read and keep to it. You could read for fifteen minutes when you go to bed, or when you get up or at lunchtime.
Read what interests you. Choose a book or a magazine about a subject that you like, because you are going to spend time and money reading it. So, choose an interesting book. The students around me always took a cardboard (硬纸板) folded (折叠的) in half, wrote their names in bold (加粗地) with the most eye-catching color, and then put the cardboard on the seat. So when the speaker needed the answers from the students, he could see and call a listener’s name directly.”

Workers in our city are changing "WC" signs all over the city. The government is spending much money changing all the bad English on signs and restaurant menus. Many other places in China are following our steps.
"WC, or water closet, is old-fashioned English. It sounds dirty to me, " says Charlie Shifflet, a young man from the US. The old sign will become "Gents/Men" and "Ladies/ Women".
"I see lots of poor English in everyday life, and not only on signs, " he says. "I know what they mean. But they are Chinglish, not real English. For example, when someone says to me ‘My hometown is Henan Province’, I know he would say: ‘My hometown is in Henan Province’. ‘Hometown’ is a smaller place in a province.” The common mistakes he picked up include "Not Entry", which should be "No Entry", "Direction of Airport" should be changed to "To the Airport". He tried it again and it was the same. So he thought, and he felt himself going before he started; I will try it once again.
He took all his pain and what was left of his strength and his long gone pride and he put it against the fish's pain and the fish came over onto his side and swam gently, his mouth almost touching the boat.
The old man dropped the line and put his foot on it and lifted the harpoon(鱼叉) as high as he could and drove it down with all his strength, and more strength he had just gathered, into the fish's side just behind the great chest fin that rose high in the air to the height of the man's chest. He felt the iron go in and he leaned(倚靠) on it and drove it further and then pushed all his weight after it.
Then the fish came alive, with his death in him, and rose high out of the water showing all his great length and width and all his power and his beauty. 9 . When your pen is broken, the battery in your toy runs out, or you have some leftover food. What do you do with these things? You will probably throw them into one bin.
But actually, all of these pieces of trash need to be sorted (分类) separately.
Garbage sorting is a big issue worldwide. In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on it.
Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a “green account (账户)” service for its residents. Account holders get points by correctly sorting their garbage. Through the Alipay app, they can exchange the points for milk, phone cards and other products. The city is asking all of its residents to sort their garbage into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry.
Wet waste is also known as household waste. “They are things you don’t want, but that pigs can eat,” Guangzhou Daily explained.
Paper, metal (金属), glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste.
Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries and fluorescent bulbs (荧光灯泡).
Finally, any waste that’s not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the “dry waste” bin.
Many other Chinese cities are also using this method to sort their garbage. For example, Shenzhen has been sorting its garbage into the same four groups since 2012. Students there also receive waste-sorting guidebooks that they must study.
China is improving its waste-sorting efforts. There is still a long way to go. But it’s never too late to learn how to sort your trash properly and protect the environment.
If you don’t sort your garbage, all of it will go to a landfill (垃圾填理场) and be buried together. These landfills can take up large areas of ground that could have been used for planting trees or crops. The electronic waste you throw away, such as batteries, can pollute the soil and groundwater (地下水). Other pieces of garbage, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled.
1. How is Shanghai encouraging people to sort their garbage?A.Creating a “green account” service with the help of Alipay |
