1 . What can be red or green, round or sharp, big or small, and more importantly, liked or disliked by someone? Yes, they are chilies(辣椒).

Many people in China enjoy putting chilies in the food. Especially in Chongqing, people cannot live without chilies. But did you know that this spicy vegetable could be also very useful?

There are about 600 million people in China eat chilies every day. So what makes people love chilies so much? Happiness. Eating chilies can bring out endorphins(内啡肽)—something good to make us happy.

Chilies cannot only give us a feeling of happiness. Scientists also found that chilies can reduce mortality risk(降低死亡风险). People who eat spicy food once or twice a week are healthier than those who eat less than once a week. If you eat spicy food six to seven times a week, your mortality risk will be lower. To keep healthy, scientists ask us to eat chilies more often.

2 . Empathy lets us feel another person's pain and makes us help. Do any other animals feel empathy? Scientists found that rats(老鼠)do, too. Most people don't like rats. In many people's eyes, rats are only bad. But Jean Decety and his partners at the University of Chicago did an experiment(实验). It showed that rats are kind, warm-hearted animals. They can feel each other's pain.

In the experiment, scientists placed pairs of rats in plastic cages(笼子)for two weeks. During this time, they got to know each other, Then scientists put one of the rats from each pair into a small container(容器)in the cages. The small container had a door. Many of the trapped(困住的)rats squeaked(吱吱叫)to show their unhappiness. The other rats of the pairs could see their friends clearly.

In most pairs, the free rats would become very worried about their friends. They kept trying to save their friends again and again throughout the month. Scientists put the rats' favorite chocolate in the cages, but the rats didn't eat it until they had saved their friends successfully. Scientists also found that female rats seemed to act more empathetic than male rats.

“The results are the first to show that the rats will do something to help if their friends are in trouble” Decety said. “Unlike those animals, rats can be used in laboratory(实验)studies. They will help us to learn which parts of the brain lead to empathy.”

3 . How do you feel about nature? After spending hours indoors, do you feel better when you visit your local park? Most people think that nature is good for our bodies and brains. However, humans are spending more time inside and less time outside. For example, the number of visitors to Canada's national parks is getting lower every year. And in countries such as the USA, only 10% teenagers can spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel this is a problem in the 2lst century.

As a result, some doctors are studying the connection between nature and health: one example of this is the work of Dr. Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a maths test. During the test, their heart rates(心率)were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3D-vitual-reality(虚拟现实)room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature. Their heart rates were slower than people's in the other group.

The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed. Another god example of how nature is good for health comes from Canada. In Toronto, researchers studied 31,000 people living in the city. In general, they found that healthier people lived near parks.

Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want nature to be part of people's everyday life. In Dubai, for example, there are plans for a new shopping mall with a large garden so shoppers can relax outside with trees, plants and water. In Switzerland, "forest schools" are popular. Many children study their subjects in the forests and do lots of exercise outside.

And South Korea is another good example: it has new forests near its cities and around 13 million people visit these forests every year. So after building cities for so long, perhaps it's now time to start rebuilding nature.

1. The writer starts the passage by __________.
A.telling storiesB.comparing numbers
C.asking questionsD.giving suggestions
2. Which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A.In Switzerland, many children study in the forests and do lots of activities outside.
B.In South Korea, about 13 million people visit new forests near the cities every year.
C.In Dubai, a new shopping mall with a large garden has been built already.
D.In the USA, only 10% teenagers can spend time outside every day.
3. We can infer from the passage that __________.
A.fewer and fewer Canadians will live near parks
B.people used to break the rule of nature to develop cities
C.the virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed
D.people's heart rates get quicker in a 3D-virtual-reality room
4. If we put the passage into three parts, which of the following is the best?

Here's one of Anne's diaries.

Friday, 10 September, 1943

Dear Kitty,

Mostly whenever I write to you, there are only pleasant things to report. Actually, they are more often unpleasant than pleasant things. However, now there is something wonderful going on. Last Wednesday evening, 8 September, we sat around listening to the seven o'clock news and the first thing we heard was: "Here follows the best news of the whole war. Italy has capitulated (屈服,停止反抗)!" Italy's unconditional surrender (投降)!! "Listeners, an hour ago, I had just finished writing when the wonderful news of Italy's capitulation came in. I can tell you that I have never deposited (放下) my notes in the waste paper basket with such joy!"

Still we have troubles, too, it's about Mr. Koophuis. As you know, we are all very fond of him, he is always cheerful and amazingly brave, although he is never well, has a lot of pain, and is not allowed to eat much or do much walking. "When Mr. Koophuis enters, the sun begins to shine." Mommy said just recently, and she is quite right. Now he has had to go into the hospital for a very unpleasant operation and will have to stay there for at least four weeks. Yours,

6 . It’s no secret that there is a space(空间) problem in Manhattan(曼哈顿). People build up higher and higher buildings because there isn’t much land left and there is no room to build out. So people have been building lots of tall and thin buildings. Developers(开发商) are trying to build higher and higher buildings. However, the government has made laws(法律) that don’t allow developers to build too high buildings.

Oiio Studio thinks about things differently, “what if our buildings were not tall but long?” So the founder of Oiio Studio, Ioannis Oikonomou, design(设计) a U-shaped building, the Big Bend. It said that a company made a lift that could travel in curves. So he designed the Big Bend. He thought it as “the longest building             in the world”. It would be 4000 feet from end to end and would need a different lift system.

7 . Work is helpful to health. Scientists find that the hard-working people live longer than those who have no jobs. Studies show that the jobless are in poorer health than job-holders. The women have jobs are healthier than housewives.

Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy, away from feeling lonely. Researches show that people feel unhappy and worried when they have nothing to do. The happiest people are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their jobs feel they are the happiest when they are working hard. They work as a bridge between their dream and reality, so they have energy every day. By work, people get to know each other. By taking part in all kinds of activities, they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss(丧失) of work means the loss of everything. It makes people down and it will cause more illnesses.

Besides, work makes one feel hopeful and proud. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are very happy.

9 . Nature is amazing! Take a close look at the world of insects(昆虫) and you will discover many unbelievable things. Considering butterflies, for example, they have beautiful, colorful wings, and perfect flying skills. On summer days, we see them flying slowly over flower gardens and wild fields.

In fact, do you know that butterflies have four stages(阶段) of lives? They begin their lives as one thing, change into another, and then another. Finally, they change into beautiful flying insects. It's true. And it's one of the wonders of nature.

First of all, there is an egg, it's usually small and colorful. A female butterfly lays an egg first. When you look at this small egg, it's hard to believe that in a few days, it will become something completely different. In time, it changes into a new life. No longer the small egg becomes a walking insect. This insect is called a caterpillar. It now has legs, eyes, a mouth and a large body. A new life has begun. The caterpillar eats, and eats, and eats. It can walk. It can see. But it is still not a butterfly.

Soon, after growing bigger, the caterpillar makes a cover for itself. It wraps(包裹) itself in this nice protective blanket and goes to sleep. This stage of a butterfly’s life is known as the "pupa" stage.

What happens next is truly amazing! After a short while, the blanket breaks and a wet, weak butterfly appears. It now has six legs, a mouth, eyes and wings. Soon the wings become strong enough, and the colorful butterfly spreads its wings and flies away. After a few weeks, this adult butterfly lays her eggs, and the cycle begins all over again.

This is just one example of the wonders of nature. Look around the natural world, and you will learn many truly amazing things.

Unlike other youth idol talent shows, this TV show invited thirty female artists who were born before 1990 to live together and compete with each other as well.
