1 . Chang’e-5 has returned from the moon to Earth. The mission’s success made China the third country to bring back samples (样本) from the moon.
Chang’e-5 was China’s third mission to land on the moon, and it’s first to get samples from the moon. There were no astronauts on this trip. Scientists ran the mission with robotic machines.
Chang’e-5 was launched (发射) from Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on November 24th, 2020. On December 1st, it got to the moon. During the stay on the moon, it got 1,731 grams of lunar samples. On December 3rd, our national flag was shown on the moon. After that, Chang’e-5 was ready to go home. On December 17th, Chang’e-5 landed safely in Inner Mongolia.
Chang’e-5 was the first mission to get samples from the moon in over 40 years. The samples will help scientists better understand the history of the moon and the solar system.
The Chang’e-5 mission has made many Chinese people excited and proud of their country’s success. The mission also showed that China has a first-rate (一流的) space program that is able to compete with other countries.
Answer the following questions according to what you read.
1. Was Chang’e-5 China’s first mission to get samples from the moon?
2. When was Chang’e-5 launched?
3. How long has Chang-5 been in space?
4. Who could use the samples to do some research?
5. As Chinese, how do we feel about Chang’e-5’s success?
Hi, I’m Sherry, and I’m an amateur astronomer (天文爱好者), which means that I like to learn about faraway stars and planets and other mysterious things in space just for fun. I recently toured the Kitt Peak National Observatory (天文台).
The mountain the observatory is built on belongs to a Native American tribe (部落). I heard people in the tribe didn’t allow astronomers to build the observatory on its mountain at first, but they changed their mind after looking through a telescope (望远镜)!
The mountaintop is perfect for star watching.
The Kitt Peak National Observatory has a collection of 26 telescopes! These aren’t telescopes you can hold in your hand.
A.It sits high on top of a tall mountain. |
B.Away from city lights, it stays dark at night. |
C.Some of the telescopes are large and expensive. |
D.All these telescopes need a whole building to hold them up and protect them. |
E.One is a solar (太阳的) telescope that astronomers use during the day for studying the sun. |
F.They started saying the astronomers had “long eyes” since they could see so far with their telescopes. |
G.Telescopes have an influence on the way we view the universe. |
3 . From a plane you can see the fields, cities, mountains or rivers below. If we go into space, we see more and more of the earth. People and man—made satellites (卫星) are sent into space to look at the earth, the stars and other planets and learn more about them.
The moon is our nearest neighbor in space. It is our satellite and men have visited it already. It is smaller than the earth. Plants can’t grow on the moon because there is no air or water on it. There are lots of mountains on the moon. At night, it is very cold on the moon. It is not comfortable to live on the moon if possible. On the moon, there is much dust here and there. The things on the moon are much lighter than the things on the earth.
The moon hasn’t its own light. It shines back (反射) the light of the sun. When the sun is shining on the side of the moon that faces us, it looks like a great round ball. We can’t see the moon when the sun is shining on the side of the moon that faces away from us.
In fact, the moon isn’t as near as it looks. It is 380, 000 kilometers away from the earth. Of course we can fly to the moon in a spaceship. It only takes more than three days to get there by spaceship.

4 . How many things can you see in the night sky? A lot! On a clear night you can see the moon, some planets, and thousands of sparking(闪烁的)stars.
You can see even more with a telescope. You might see that many stars look larger than others. You might see that some stars that look white are really red or blue. With bigger and bigger telescopes you can see more and more objects in the sky. And you can see those objects in more and more detail.
But scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. We won’t see them with the biggest telescope(望远镜)in the world on the clearest night of the year. That’s because they’re invisible. They’re the mysterious dead stars called black holes.
You might find it hard to imagine that stars die. After all, our sun is a star. Year after year we see it up in the sky, burning brightly and giving us heat and light. The Sun certainly doesn’t seem to be getting old or weak. But stars do burn out and die after billions of years.
As a star’s gases(气体)burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gases run out, the star stops burning and begins to die.
So next time you look up at the night sky, remember: there’s more in the sky than we can see!

5 . “Is there life out there?” is a question which scientists are trying to answer. They look for life in space. In recent years, they have turned their attention to Europa, the sixth closest moon of Jupiter (木星).
Europa is a little smaller than the moon and is covered by ice. Its surface is too cold for anything to live there. Scientists want to know what lies under the ice, for that is where any life on Europa would most likely be.
For years, scientists believed all life on the earth depended on the sun. The discovery of chemosynthetic (化学合成的) life has changed scientists’ idea—planets with oceans (海洋) and hydrothermal vents (热液喷口) might also support life.
Europa does have oceans. In fact, Europa appears to have more oceans than the earth does. The ice on this moon’s surface covers what appears to be moving water. Do these oceans have hydrothermal vents? Scientists do not know yet. If they do, the oceans of Europa might support life. Only a space travel to Europa would tell for certain.
Scientists are studying the closest possible environment they can find on the earth: Lake Vostok. Like Europa’s oceans, Lake Vostok is miles under a frozen surface. It does not receive direct sunlight, either.
So like Europa, the lake cannot support photosynthetic (光合作用的) life. If scientists find life in the lake, it would support the idea that there might also be life on Europa.

7 . We want to explore and try to better understand the world in which we live. Space exploration (探索) is one of the ways. Through the exploration of space, we can begin to unravel the mysteries of our universe and to better know our living environment.
Space exploration provides us with knowledge about the beginning of our solar system (太阳系), our own planet and ourselves. It also helps answer the questions that have puzzled us for many years. Solar system exploration is important because it is good for us.
Space technology has become an important part of our daily lives. Some technology uses satellites (卫星) to communicate. Satellites are also used to examine the changes in the Earth’s climate (气候) and seas, for weather report and for military (军事). We also use satellites in food production. Because of the use of space technology in crops, fewer and fewer people will suffer (受苦) hunger.
The space program provides a chance for nations to work together. The cooperation (合作) promotes (促进) peace and understanding between governments and their people. Many governments have taken part in the space technology, including the United States, Russia, Japan, the European nations and India. In the near future, other nations will take part in it. In fact, the United States remains the leader in new space technology.

10 . Earth is our home. It has air that we can breathe(呼吸). It has water for us to drink. It has plants and animals that we can eat. Earth is not too hot or too cold for us. It has everything we need to live.
We are on earth, but we can see things that are not on earth. Early in the morning, we can see the sun comes up. All day, the sun seems to move across the sky. Later in the day, we can see the sun goes down.
But the sun is not really moving around us. We are the ones who are moving. Every morning, we turn towards the sun. Every night, we turn away from it. Every year, we go around it. Earth is our spaceship. All of us in the spaceship are riding around the sun.
At night, we can often see the moon and stars. From earth, stars look like little points of light because they are so far away. But stars are really big. A star is a great mass(一团) of burning gas. It gives off light and heat. Our sun is a star.
There are eight planets moving around our sun. Earth is the third planet around the sun. Some of the planets have moons. A moon goes around a planet just as a planet goes around a star. Earth has only one moon. Some planets have more.
Answer the questions according to the passage.
1. Why is earth our home?
2. Is the sun really moving around us?
3. Why do stars look small?
4. How many planets move around our sun?
5. Some planets have more moons, don’t they?
