1 . What’s the most important thing you need to live on? Without water, humans, plants and animals cannot live. NASA scientists have been studying Mars (火星) to see if humans could make a home there in the future. So the first thing they must look for is water.

Well, after years of studies, NASA scientists have found that there is water on the planet! But you would not want to drink it. The water would be too salty for humans to drink, but this is a step in the right direction.

“To ‘follow the water’ isn’t an easy job. We have spent such a long time on our studies,” said NASA astronaut John Grunsfeld. “Now we have science that shows what we’ve thought.”

Scientists found frozen (结冰的) water on Mars back in 2008, but for things to live on the planet, there has to be liquid (液体的) water.

The first time they thought there could be water on Mars was two years later. At that time dark long marks appeared going downhill when the temperature went up on the planet. But why do they think it is water?

“The finding of hydrated (含水的) salts means that water plays an important part in forming these marks,” said Lujendra, author of the NASA study.

What they found is too salty, so it might not be the best for living things. But this gives NASA scientists hope that there could be living things on the planet.

Do you think it might be possible for humans to fly to Mars and build another home there one day? Do you want to be a scientist who might make it come true?

3. The dark long marks appeared going downhill when the temperature rose.
4. According to NASA scientists, salts play an important part in forming the dark marks.
5. The hydrated salts make NASA scientists hope there could be living things on Mars.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了科学家试图利用水、鱼和鱼的排泄物在火星上种植水果和蔬菜。
2 . 根据短文内容,判断正误(正确“T”,错误“F”)。

A team of scientists are carrying out a project at the University of Greenwich in London. They are trying to find ways to make food on Mars in the future. The project is called Feeding Mars. It tries to use water, fish and fish waste to grow fruit and vegetables on Mars.

It would take at least 21 months to reach Mars, learn about its surface and return to Earth. So it would be a big help if the spacemen could grow fresh food on Mars itself. However, farming on Mars will be very hard. There’s a lot of water that could be taken from ice just below the surface, but the land on Mars is short of the nutrients that living things need. The team says that they could solve the problem by growing plants and fish together. Fish waste can then be used to provide nutrients for plants.

“It is expected that you can grow lots of food, such as vegetables, tea and medicinal plants on Mars,” said Dr. Benz Kotzen, who leads the project. “You can even harvest fish for food then.”

1. The project tries to use water and fish to grow fruit on the moon.
2. The project would take at least 21 months to return to Mars.
3. The poor land condition makes it difficult to farm on Mars.
4. Scientists could grow plants and fish together to solve the nutrients’ problem.
5. Dr. Benz Kotzen was disappointed about this project.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了有趣的太空生活。

3 . Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in space? The most important thing to remember about living in space is that there is no gravity. That means astronauts can’t do a lot of things that you do easily in your daily life. For example, astronauts can’t pour themselves a cup of juice the way you can. Why? Because gravity makes the juice pour from the bottle into your cup. Astronauts can’t rely(依靠) on gravity. Astronauts can’t lie on beds and sleep the way you do because gravity is what holds you to your bed.

So how do astronauts live in space? Eating in space is like eating on earth in some ways. Food like rice and mashed(糊状的) potatoes sticks to spoons, so it doesn’t float away. Other foods come in cans or packages(盒). So they don’t float away, either.

There is no gravity in space, so astronauts do not have to sleep on beds or the floor. They can sleep anywhere they want, and they can sleep in any position they want. They usually use sleeping bags. They simply tie their sleeping bags to a wall, or a bed. That way, they don’t float around and bump(撞) into things while they are sleeping.

Astronauts are very busy people. They have jobs to do, and they work very hard. But they also need to relax sometimes. Astronauts usually get to talk to their families on a video call once a week. They also get to stay in touch by email. Astronauts can bring chess and other games with them. Some even bring musical instruments. Astronauts also watch movies and news programmes. Sometimes they talk to schools and news reporters, too. Astronauts may have a lot of work to do, but they also find time for fun.

Scientists have been learning about Venus for a long time. First, they looked at Venus through telescopes (望远镜). But Venus is covered with thick clouds.     2     So, they made guesses about it.

For a long time, scientists thought that Venus had water and plants. They thought Venus might have animals, too.     3

4     In the 1960s, they began sending probes (航天探测器) to Venus. The probes flew through the thick clouds. They took pictures of Venus up close. They found out many things, too. The probes sent the pictures and things they found out back to the scientists.

5 . We have always been interested in the Moon. 2, 000 years ago, people already knew it moves around the Earth and where it would be in the sky at different times of the year.     1

When scientists could use telescopes to study the Moon more closely, their ideas began to change. They could see the Moon was made of rocks.     2     And they believed the Moon had once been a planet. It was caught in Earth’s gravity millions of years ago.

In 1969, Moon rocks were finally brought to the Earth by astronauts.     3     To their surprise, scientists found that the Moon and the Earth are made of the same things except for water.     4

After years of study, some scientists think that the Moon was once part of the Earth. They believe maybe 4 million years ago, something hit the Earth.     5     These rocks slowly joined together and after many years became the Moon.

In the future, even though our ideas about the Moon may change again, we will still be interested in it.
