1 . One day, while his mother was out hunting, the gray cub (幼兽) found the way out of the cave (洞穴). At first, he was afraid. But the need to know and understand was greater than his fear, so he went out. He soon learnt that the floor of the world was not flat like the floor of the cave. And he fell, screaming in fear.
But he soon sat up, and started walking and looking around him. He met a squirrel, and a woodpecker, both of which moved away from him. So he learned that the world had things that stayed in one place, and other things that moved.
He had beginner’s luck when he fell into a ptarmigan’s nest. In the nest were seven chicks. He realized this was meat, like his mother gave him. So he ate them all. As he walked away from the nest, the mother ptarmigan (雷鸟) attacked him. He fought back, biting her wing with his small teeth. He was excited and happy. He was fighting for meat, fighting to kill. It was what wolves did. He learnt another important lesson.
Then he left the ptarmigan free and rested. As he watched her, something rushed down from above him, picked up the ptarmigan and flew back up into the sky. It was an eagle.
He was learning. Live things were meat, but if they were big enough, live things could also hurt. It was better to eat small live things.
Later something small jumped in front of him, so he put his paw on it. It was a young weasel (鼬鼠). It made strange noises, and soon the mother weasel appeared. She jumped at his neck and bit him with sharp teeth. She wasn’t big, but he didn’t know how dangerous weasels were.
Suddenly she jumped, and bit into his throat. He tried to fight, but the weasel held on. The cub was sure to die, but luckily his mother, the she-wolf, heard his frightened calls and came to save him.

①Sugar-free cookies, reduced-sugar cereal, sugar-free candy, diet soda. Do these seem like healthier alternatives (替代物)? After sugar became something forbidden in the nutrition and fitness world, sugar-free products acted as alternatives for once beloved sweet drinks and snacks. Claiming to be ZERO sugar, they were believed as healthier choices, especially for those people who manage diabetics (糖尿病), or aim to slim down. But the truth is they aren’t equal to better.
②When a product is labeled sugar-free, it means artificial sweeteners are used instead of real sugar. Artificial sweeteners don’t come from natural sources but they are chemical substances that are added to food and drinks to make them sweeter. Actually, most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar, even 200—600 times sweeter, so only a tiny amount is needed.
③Let’s find out how artificial sweeteners work. They work similarly to regular sugar by exciting your taste buds. The taste buds send signals to the brain that they have tasted something sweet and you feel a similar sense as you would with sugar.
④In recent studies, scientists have revealed artificial sweeteners are more harmful to our body than real sugar. Many businesses market sugar-free alternatives as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”. It misleads people to believe sugar-free products can make them slim and healthy. But it’s reported that you get no nutritional value from consuming them.
⑤What’s worse, when you eat this kind of sweet food, your body continues to desire it even though your body can’t metabolize (新陈代谢) these sugar-free alternatives. Your brain does not know the difference, either. In turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain and Type 2 diabetes.
⑥Similarly, artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugar which affects everything you eat. In other words, your body doesn’t know how to deal with artificial sweeteners because they have nothing real to process.
⑦Here’s a golden rule: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar. In the war against artificial sweeteners and real sugar, both lose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with natural sugars that come from fruits and stay away from products claiming to be sugar-free or diet!

A.People should fight against sugary products and stay away from them all the time. |

3 . When we talk about reading, we probably think of eyes, because we do the reading by eyes. But we can do some reading by ears, too. And with the development of smartphones, it’s getting easier and easier to do some reading by ears—by listening to news, novels and so on. This is audio reading. We can do audio reading in many places.
Many people like doing audio reading in bed, before going to sleep. They like to just lie in bed in the dark before they fall asleep. This would be a great time to do some audio reading. If you read a paper book, the lights have to be turned on and you have to turn the pages with your hand.
Some other people would like to do audio reading in the kitchen. For some people, it’s boring to cook. So they enjoy their time by listening to news or stories. For some others, it’s interesting to cook by listening to instructions (操作指南) by famous cooks.
Audio reading is a favorite while a person is exercising. It allows the mind to be free while the legs, body and arms are kept busy. But be careful. Don’t make yourself and others in danger. Let’s take driving for example. If you pay much attention to listening, you can’t be a good driver.
Finally, audio reading is helpful for blind (瞎的) people. It’s difficult for them to do reading in the past. But now, they can do some audio reading easily.

4 . A long time ago, people were very different from the way we are now. For example, if you find a really old house somewhere, you will see that the doors are usually much lower than they are today. Why? Because hundreds of years ago, people were shorter. Over time, the human body has changed a lot.
Can we expect the human body to keep changing in the future? For sure, and the main reason is that we have more and more technology (科技), and it’s changing how we live. What kind of changes can we expect? Well, no one can be 100 percent sure, but here are some possible changes.
In the future, people will probably be even taller. Most of us now have much better food than people in the past, so we grow more. But we will get weaker (弱的) in more than one way. Our muscles (肌肉) will not be as strong as now, because we won’t do lots of physical work.
We are already using our feet less, and our hands more (think about cars and computers). So we can expect that our legs will get shorter and our feet smaller. At the same time, our fingers (手指) will get longer. And our fingers and eyes will both get better, because they will have to do more work together.
What about the mouth? It will get smaller, because we needn’t talk so much with the help of technology. And last but not least—people won’t have much hair on their bodies as now, because we don’t need it to keep ourselves warm anymore.
Will all these things happen? And if so, when? These are questions that no one can answer for sure.
1. What does the underlined word “they” in the fourth paragraph refer to?A.Legs and feet. | B.Fingers. | C.Eyes. | D.Fingers and eyes. |

Dear Patrick,
I’ve been interested in figure skating (花样滑冰) for a few months, but when I turned to my parents asking for more time on weekends to practice, they refused and said that I should spend my weekend studying instead. What can I do with this?
Jerry
Hi Jerry,
First, know that it is normal for many people to be refused when asking their parents for approval (同意). As we grow up, we start to realize that our parents have their own ideas on life and what someone should or should not do. They are trying to do the responsible (负责任的) thing and wish you to study more. I am sure you’ll feel better if you try to understand them.
They may also not understand how you feel and why it is important for you. Then you need to talk with them and try to persuade (说服) them by giving them good reasons. Since your parents think your study is more important, you can tell them how a figure skating hobby would help improve your studying ability. For example, you could say, “________”
Still, if figure skating is something you really love, just try to find ways to do it. Live without pity (遗憾), and let nothing stop you!
Patrick

7 . Modern China, like most of the countries in the world, uses the Gregorian calendar as its primary way of keeping time through the year. That means January 1 in Paris is also January 1 in Beijing. However, the traditional Chinese lunisolar (日与月的) calendar plays a necessary role in modern Chinese society.
Often mistakenly seen as a lunar calendar (月历), the traditional Chinese calendar is in fact lunisolar. The lunar calendar follows the moon’s synodic orbit (天体运行的轨道). It takes the moon 29.53 days to finish one full orbit around the earth. The year is then divided into 12 lunar months, which only adds up to 354 days each year, about 11 days short of the actual time it takes the earth to finish one full orbit around the sun. The Chinese add a 13th month to their traditional calendar about once every four years, that is, a leap year (闰月). So the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar is a hybrid timekeeping way that considers both the moon’s orbit around the earth and the earth’s 365-day orbit around the sun.
The Gregorian calendar is the official calendar in China. It tells people holidays such as Labor Day, Chinese National Day, and the international New Year. However, the Chinese calendar still plays an important role in everyday life. It tells people the traditional Chinese holidays such as the Lantern Festival, Tomb-Sweeping Day, Mid-Autumn Festival, and, of course, the Chinese New Year.
