文章大意:这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了如何让人们早晨的压力更小、更愉快,以便更能充分利用早晨。

1 . Are You a Moring Person?

Mornings are not for everyone. Knowing that our own bodies may be wired to prefer a certain time of day is certainly a relief. But many of us still have to wake up and function during those first daylight hours. So what can you do?

We tapped a variety of experts - from sleep experts to nutritionists to life organizational pros (生活管理达人) — to share their tricks on how to make morning less stressful and more pleasant for even the most after-hours of night owls.

1. Night waking

Poor sleep quality can explain why we sometimes wake up from eight hours of snoozing and feel like we only clocked in at four. “It’s normal to have one or two awakenings, but more than that leaves us feeling groggy (昏昏沉沉) in the morning because of the fragmented sleep,” explains Shelby Harris, director of the behavioral sleep medicine program at Montefiore Medical Center.

2. The Science of snoozing

The snooze button does more harm than good. Nodding off again sends you into a light and fragmented sleep! Multiple snoozes can leave you feeling groggier than just getting out of bed the first time. Instead, be honest about the time you intend to get up and then enjoy every last minute of sleep, so you can wake up alert and ready to go.

3. Don’t ease into your workday

It can be tempting to plow through the easy things early on—checking e-mail, scanning the headlines—but it’s wise to tackle the bigger stuff first. “Getting to work on the most important tasks not only ups the chances that they actually get done, but it also leaves you with a burst of accomplishment to take with you the rest of the day,” says Jason Selk, coauthor of Organize Tomorrow Today.

4. Save social media for later

Schedule a social media block later in the afternoon to check in when you’re likely to need a break anyway, and save the morning for the important stuff.

1. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To help us to get the most out of our mornings.
B.To relieve us from the guilt of multiple snoozes in the morning.
C.To warn us of the harm of not getting out of bed immediately.
D.To inform us about the fact that our bodies are wired to prefer a certain time of day.
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.One or two awakenings ensure us a good night’s sleep.
B.To be an early bird, better forget about the snooze button.
C.It’s important not to block social medium if you want to save your morning.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了许多关于去新学校的事情。

5 . It’s school ‘time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared (害怕的) on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stay for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.

Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the things you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day,   they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.

You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it’s a great day to make new friends, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did, and so will your new friends!

Seeing old friends can make the first day an exciting one. You can make the day special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of shoes. It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing. But make sure that you pack (打包) them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.

1. What do teachers usually do at the beginning of a new school year according to the passage?
A.Allowing their students to pay attention to them.
B.Asking their students to introduce themselves to them.
C.Going over what their students have learned.
D.Introducing themselves to their students.
2. How do you probably feel if you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school?
A.NervousB.LuckyC.HappyD.Upset
3. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.What to know about a new school.B.How to prepare for a new school.
C.What to do on your first day of school.D.How to make friends on your first day of school.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了两个与鸡蛋有关的实验的操作过程。

6 . Experimenting with eggs

What can you do with eggs other than eat them?

Naked Eggs

What does an egg look like without its shell? You may be picturing the white and yolk in a bowl after cracking it, but that isn’t the only way to remove the shell.

Materials: 1 egg, white vinegar, a bowl, a spoon

Directions: Fill a bowl with one cup of vinegar. Add the egg to the bowl, and wait at least 24 hours. When you check it after a day, you’ll notice some bubbles on the egg and a residue(残留物)in the water. Use the spoon to gently remove the egg from the bowl. Remove the old vinegar, and add a cup of fresh vinegar. Return the egg to the bowl, and wait another 24 hours. When you remove the egg this time, the shell should completely disappear.

Walking on Eggshells

Can Eggs hold the weight of your entire body?

Materials: six cartons(硬纸盒)of eggs, a garbage bag

Directions: Place the garbage bag on the floor to make any necessary clean up easier. Place the cartons of eggs into two rows of three. Make sure all the eggs are pointing in the same direction-either all pointy end up or all rounded end up. Step onto the first carton of eggs carefully. If you’re careful, you will succeed. Eggs are actually incredibly strong. The arch shape at the top and the bottom of the egg allows pressure to be distributed evenly over the egg.

2. What was the main factor in the success of the second experiment?

Everyone was so friendly and polite. They made me feel at ease. It was like I’d been at the school for a hundred years!

The day started very early at 7: 00 am. I had my breakfast downstairs with my mom. She could tell that I was very nervous. Mom kept asking me what was wrong. She told me I had nothing to worry about and that everyone was going to love me. If they didn’t love me, Mom said to send them her way for a good talking to. I couldn’t stop laughing.

My mom dropped me off at the school gates about five minutes before the bell. A little blonde girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving (招手) at me. She ran over and told me her name was Abigail. She was very nice and we became close straight away. We spent all morning together and began to talk to another girl called Stacey. The three of us sat together in class all day and we even made our way home together! It went so quickly. Our teacher told us that tomorrow we would really start learning and developing new skills.

I cannot wait until tomorrow and feel as though I am really going to enjoy my time at my new school. I only hope that my new friends feel the same way too.

10 . In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.

Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year.
