1 . What makes people so special? Tool use, self-consciousness, language, and culture are high on the list, but in fact all of these characteristics can be found elsewhere in the animal kingdom. Humans and apes are close relatives, so it is perhaps not surprising that chimpanzees use tools or that gorillas (大猩猩) have a sense of fair play, even rejecting carrots (which they normally accept) when they see their neighbors getting grapes. But the qualities that we often think of as uniquely human exist not just on land, but in the ocean as well.

Among the invertebrates, octopuses (八爪鱼) are known for their intelligence, even exhibiting evidence of playfulness, tool use, and personality. But these skilled predators live alone and consequently lack culture. Dolphins, on the other hand, are large-brained, long-living, social- group-based predators, and it is here that we find the greatest similarity to human-like culture and awareness.

Culture depends on the ability of animals to pass on things they have learned to others. Many animals have culture in this sense, but what sets dolphins apart is what they pass on. Some bottlenose dolphins hold sponges in their mouths that they use as tools to sweep for fish hiding on the ocean floor. This ability is handed down through generations (especially in females), with some families — grandmother, mother, and daughter — all feeding in this highly specialized way.

Another characteristic that dolphins share with humans is their ability to recognize themselves in a mirror. When facing a mirror, most animals behave as though they are interacting with another individual. Even in humans, the ability to recognize that the image in a mirror is oneself does not occur before the age of 18 months. Dolphins not only recognize themselves, but if a black mark is put on the body of a dolphin, it will spend extra time at the mirror to look at the mark.

1. The example of gorillas rejecting carrots shows they ________.
A.are not easy to foolB.prefer fruit to vegetables
C.have a special taste for foodD.have an awareness of equality
2. What do octopuses lack compared with dolphins?
A.Cooperation.B.Intelligence.
C.Tool using ability.D.Fun-loving spirits.
3. What makes dolphin culture special?
A.They tend to hunt in groups.
B.Their hunting skills are passed down.
C.Their learning environment is favourable.
D.Their families are typically female-controlled.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Dolphins enjoy looking at their own reflection in the mirror.
B.Dolphins are as intelligent as a typical 18-month-old human baby.
C.Dolphins are generally regarded as the most advanced non-human species.
D.Dolphins’ ability to recognize their own reflection is a higher-order mental skill.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了睡眠不足对人们的影响,一项实验发现睡眠不足的人还不太可能帮助他人。

3 . Lack of sleep has been linked to heart disease, poor mood and loneliness. It could also make people less generous, researchers report in PLOS Biology.

To test the link between sleep loss and generosity, Eti Ben Simon and her team first brought 23 participants into the lab for two nights. The participants slept through one night and stayed awake for another night. In the mornings, participants completed a questionnaire rating their likelihood of helping strangers in various situations. Participants rated on a scale (等级) from one to five, with one for least likely to help and five for most likely. About 80 percent of participants showed less likelihood of helping others when sleep-deprived (睡眠不足的) than when rested.

In another experiment, the researchers gathered 136 participants online and had them keep a sleep journal for four nights. Each participant then completed the same questionnaire as in the first experiment before 1 pm the next day. The researchers found that the more time participants spent awake in bed, the lower their scores were.

In the final experiment focused on Daylight Saving Time (DST), the researchers looked at 16 years of charitable donations to Donors Choose, a nonprofit that raises money for school projects. In the workweek following the time change, total donations, which typically averaged about $82 per day, dropped to about $73 per day. That is to say, the hour of sleep lost in the switch over to DST every spring appears to reduce people’s tendency to help others.

Sleep deprivation in the modern world is a serious problem, Ben Simon says. But unlike many other large-scale problems-like climate change—this one has a ready solution. “If you think about promoting sleep and letting people get the sleep they need, what an impact that could have on the societies we live in!” she said.

1. Where did the participants complete questionnaires in the first experiment?
A.In a laboratory.B.In their workplaces.
C.On the road.D.On the Internet.
2. What were the participants in the second experiment asked to do?
A.Express their understanding of DST.
B.Record their sleep time by themselves.
C.Write down their daily activities before bed.
D.Sleep through one night and stay awake for another.
3. What does the underlined part “the time change” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The change in one’s working hours.
B.The switch from day to night.
C.The one-hour switch over to DST.
D.The switch from the weekend to the weekday.
4. Which aspect of sleep deprivation is the text mainly about?
A.Its impact on one’s work.B.Its impact on one’s emotion.
C.Its impact on one’s health.D.Its impact on one’s social behavior.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了野生动物电影摄影师Douglas Thorn通过红外手持摄像机和无人机救助动物的事迹。

4 . Animal rescuer Douglas Thron’s passion for animals began when he was a little kid. “I wanted to be a wildlife cinematographer (电影摄影师),” Thron recalled.

When Thron grew up, he did just that, working as a cinematographer for shows like Shark Week, filming great white sharks off the coast of Santa Cruz. It was the hurricane in the Bahamas in 2018 that pushed him to do animal rescue work.

The first animal Thron ever rescued was a dog after the hurricane. Then Thron was testing out using a drone (无人驾驶飞机) and found the dog in the middle of the ruins where hundreds of houses had been destroyed. Equipped with an infrared scope (红外线镜), the camera of the drone used heat to detect the animals at night. “The animal’s body temperature will produce light on the screen and you can pick it out amongst the ruins,” explains Thron. He rescued him. And as nobody claimed him after 30 days, he adopted him. “He is a wonderful partner,” Thron laughed.

Thron has been going non-stop since then. His TV show, Doug to the Rescue, shows some of his heartwarming animal rescues, including after Hurricane Laura in Louisiana and after fires in Northern California and Oregon. Thron also helped rescue koalas after fires damaged parts of Australia, using drones to help locate the animals.

Thron’s dream is to one day have an animal rescue center where he can train others to fly drones and to make Infrared drones as popular for rescuing animals as helicopters are for rescuing people after a disaster.

“It blows me away how many more animals we’re able to save,” Thron says, “and how much faster we can save them before they might pass away after a disaster.”

1. What was Thron mainly responsible for as a cinematographer?
A.Reporting natural disasters.B.Protecting sharks.
C.Advertising drones.D.Filming wild animals.
2. What inspired Thron to start rescuing animals?
A.A hurricane in the Bahamas.B.A terrible fire in California.
C.The bad situation of sharks.D.A TV show named Shark Week.
3. What happened to the first animal Thron ever rescued?
A.It rescued Thron in return.
B.It passed away after 30 days.
C.It was trained to rescue other animals.
D.It became good company for Thron.
4. Why does Thron dream of having an animal rescue center?
A.To help animals recover from disasters.
B.To raise awareness about animal protection.
C.To train people to use drones to rescue animals.
D.To provide shelter for the animals he has rescued.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项新的研究发现,该研究表明网上购物可以帮助人们坚持健康的饮食。

7 . For people who just can’t seem to pass up the candy in a supermarket checkout line, perhaps grocery shopping online could help reduce these impulse (冲动) purchases, a new study finds. The study suggests that online grocery shopping could help people stick to a healthy diet, said lead study author Jaime Coffino, a public health researcher at the University at Albany, State University of New York.

Previous research shows that people who are more impulsive may be less healthy than less impulsive people, Coffino told Live Science. In a grocery store, that impulsiveness could lead to a shopping cart (购物车) filled with food with little nutritional value.

The new study looked at 60 college students who filled out questionnaires (调查问卷) that assessed their levels of impulsiveness as well as how they respond to the presence of food. The students were then told they had $48.50 for grocery shopping, and were asked to fill an online shopping cart with “nutritious, affordable and tasty” foods. When Coffino calculated the nutritional value of all the foods in each person’s online shopping cart, she found that there was no link between the foods a person chose and how impulsive the person was. “It didn’t matter how impulsive a person was,” Coffino said. “The nutritional outcomes didn’t vary.”

The new University at Albany study dismisses previous suggestions by Britain’s top doctor that buying groceries online is bad for our health. Last June Professor Dame Sally Davies, the Chief Medical Officer, urged people to keep making trips to the supermarket to boost health. She cited a lack of exercise as a pressing health problem, with many adults failing to meet recommended daily guidelines for staying active.

Often, when people buy groceries online, they need to search for each item they want, as opposed to strolling (闲逛) through a store and saying, for example, “Oh, those cakes look good.” Online, more planning and thought is needed. In addition, online grocery shopping makes people more aware of how much money they’re spending, which could prevent them from adding impulsive picks to their carts, Coffino said.

1. What is the conclusion of previous research?
A.Food displayed near checkout areas is more likely to be bought.
B.In-store grocery shopping leads to unaffordable purchases.
C.Impulsive people tend to follow a poor diet.
D.Grocery shopping patterns vary little among people.
2. What do we know about the study participants?
A.They focused more on taste than nutrition.
B.They made similar food choices to one another.
C.They made a few impulse purchases.
D.They shifted their shopping habits.
3. What is Coffino’s attitude to Davies’s advice?
A.Disapproving.B.Unclear.C.Favorable.D.Tolerant.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Making trips to the supermarket boosts health
B.Adding impulsive picks to your shopping cart is up to you
C.Online grocery shopping makes you more financially aware
D.Doing food shop online could be healthier

8 . Tim Holland is 18 years old and a senior at Lucy C. Laney Comprehensive High School in Augusta, Georgia. Ever since he was young, Holland has been loving animals, particularly the cold-blooded kind. He decided to try herping (野采), something most young men like him aren’t into, in 2020 and said the first time was “low-key and hard” because he didn’t know exactly where the animals were.

After a while, Holland gained hands-on experience and developed a sharp eye. Influenced by him, some of his friends tried out herping too. One of these friends, Ro Smith, encouraged him to start a TikTok page about herping. It took some convincing, but Holland eventually decided to try it and started his TikTok page Nukherping. The general format of his videos is pretty simple: Holland shows animals he has found, says a bit about them and then repeats, with the desire to make them known to the viewers. He has slowly become very popular, with his biggest video gaining over 2 million views in early April.

Though his videos are laid-back, Holland takes herping safety very seriously and hopes his audience could take it seriously, too. Holland keeps a distance from the dangerous animals he finds and adds warnings to videos with such creatures, telling his viewers “do not try this at home”. He also carries equipment such as hand sanitizer, gloves and snake sticks to ensure safety and cleanliness.

Holland hopes to travel after graduating from high school so he can check off some of the animals on his “must-see” list. He also plans to study zoology at North Greenville University in South Carolina and play on the soccer team there.

Some people around Holland think Holland is crazy for what he does, but his mother, Latasha, takes a different view. “I think that’s gonna be very interesting. He can inspire and educate other young boys and girls with his experience, and it’s also something that’s going to be good for the community,” she said.

1. What does Holland want to do with Nukherping?
A.Attract people to herping.
B.Spread knowledge about animals.
C.Support his friend Ro Smith.
D.Call on people to protect animals.
2. Which belongs to Holland’s future plan?
A.Traveling around the world.
B.Going into teaching young children.
C.Becoming a zoology major.
D.Playing for the national soccer team.
3. Which words can best describe Holland ?
A.Ambitious and energetic.
B.Adventurous and inspiring.
C.Devoted and responsible.
D.Cautious and sharp-minded.
4. What is Holland’s mother’s attitude to his herping ?
A.Concerned.B.Critical.C.Indifferent.D.Favorable.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了伯特利大学商学副教授Joyce LeMay给正在求职的大学毕业生们的一些建议。

9 . Joyce LeMay is an associate professor of business at Bethel University. She said that college seniors are always amazed by how much work goes into finding a job. “Many college seniors have great resumes(简历) from internships and other part-or full-time jobs. But they are surprised by how long the interviewing process takes,” Many even become discouraged when they are rejected for a role, too. However, there are a lot of ways to increase your chances of finding the perfect role.

“Don’t just look for jobs online,” said LeMay. “Although it’s easy to find jobs on the internet, over 85 percent of job seekers are also looking at the same jobs. Hundreds of people can apply for each position and employers get inundated with responses,” she said. If you do find a job online, LeMay recommends first looking within your own contacts. “It’s good to find out if you have someone in your network that could help you get connected,” she said.

LeMay also advises writing a separate application for each role. “Your resume needs to stand out from your competition and the best way to do that is to customize(定制) it to the specific job you are applying for,” said   LeMay. In the experience section, be sure to highlight accomplishments that match the job description. This will show a future employer that you’re qualified for the role.

A job search can take three to six months or longer, so don’t take rejection personally. You will not get a job offer from every interview, but don’t let that affect your confidence. It’s important to keep trying. “Many college graduates have their hopes set on one or two companies and when the job doesn’t come through they are devastated(难以承受),” said LeMay. “Keep your mind and your options open—there are many incredible career opportunities you haven’t heard of yet.”

1. What does Joyce LeMay mainly talk about?
A.Job rejection is common and frustrating.
B.College seniors prepare their resumes well.
C.College seniors needn’t get frustrated in job rejection.
D.Job interview s consume too much energy.
2. What does the underlined word “inundated” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.charged.B.floodedC.trappedD.equipped.
3. Why does LeMay encourage college graduates to keep trying?
A.The incredible jobs are always there.
B.Hunting a job helps improve abilities.
C.Each interview guarantees a job offer.
D.A positive mind ensures a good interview,
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.How can you avoid frustration in job hunt?

10 . Dad’s car pulled into the driveway. I ran to the door. Dad smiled as if he had a secret. “It feels cold to us, but it’s warm and attractive to see a frog. Are you coming?” he asked. I agreed with excitement and then put on my raincoat.

“Hey, look at this one,” Dad shined his light on a green frog the size of his thumb. The frog jumped, its four legs sticking straight out. I found my first frog on a driveway. A bright-green one with shiny skin. I wondered what it would feel like. I could see the frog breathing.

I could imagine a car running over it. I said, “Dad, can you move this one?” “You do it,” Dad said. I looked at the frog. I didn’t want to touch it. But I didn’t want it to get squashed (压扁的). I reached down. It jumped through my fingers. I tried again. Cupping one hand around the frog, I picked it up with the other hand. Its skin felt cold and soft. The frog moved.
