文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要论述了笑给人带来的好处和积极作用。

2 . The idea that you can use humor, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humor, laughter and play plays an important role in keeping you healthy.

Treat the blues with a sense of humor, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you, and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger.

Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as it’s for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive (认知的) falling.

Anyway, adding humor, laughter, and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humor, laughter and play to make our life more active, more interesting and happier.

3. What does the author think the old should do?
A.They should have a good rest.B.They should prevent cognitive falling.
C.They should take part in physical play.D.They should play like children.

3 . My teacher held up a piece of broken glass and asked, “Who broke this window?”

Thirty boys tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what the teacher might have found out. She seldom became angry, but she was this time.

“Oh,” I thought. I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a naughty throw of a baseball. If I admitted guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn’t even get an allowance. “My father is going to have a fit as a result of it,” I thought. I didn’t want to raise my hand, but some force much stronger than I was pulled it skyward (朝向天空). I told the truth, “I did it.” It was hard enough to say what I had done.

My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher to strike a student, but I feared she was going to start with me.

“I know how much you like birds,” she said as she stood looking down at my guilt-ridden face. “Here is the field guide about birds that you are constantly checking out. It is yours now. It’s time we got a new one for the school anyway. You will not be punished, but remember that I am not rewarding you for your misdeed (恶行), but I am rewarding you for your truthfulness.”

I couldn’t believe it! I wasn’t being punished and I was getting my own bird field guide — the very one that I had been saving up money to buy.

The lesson my teacher taught me stays with me every day, and it will echo forever.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了现在高中生课业负担重,导致学生睡眠不足而上课犯困、注意力不集中的现象,建议学校应减少课业,推迟上课时间,让学生由充足的睡眠。

6 . Take a look inside a high school classroom. You will most likely find a teacher at the front of the class and students sitting at their desks. Yet, look closer, and you might notice a familiar scene: many of these students are not paying attention. Instead, they are dozing off (打盹) or even completely asleep.

Today, the majority of high school students are not getting enough sleep. This is a serious problem, especially as students are doing more than ever with their time. They come to school early, spend hours listening to teachers and taking tests, then run off to practices and meetings, and come home to be faced with even more work. And the homework load these days is not light; teachers give hours’ worth of homework each night.

Most kids need at least nine hours of sleep per night in order to function properly. Yet the period of this nine hours shifts as a child gets older. After puberty (青春期), the body’s internal clock changes so that it is difficult for teens to fall asleep before 11 p.m. So even if a student falls asleep at eleven, they would need to sleep until at least 8 am, to get a full night’s sleep. Considering the time at which most high schools in this country begin, those nine hours are clearly being shortened. Few high schools start after 8 a.m.

However, there are schools that have paid attention to this research and pushed backward the start of their school day. In schools where the start time is after 8:30 in the morning, the teachers believe that there has been a real change in their students. They note that the students miss class less, pay more attention in class, perform better in class, and report lower levels of depression. The researchers of these studies say that the results are quite important and that more schools should consider pushing backward their start time of their school day.

1. Which of the following would the author agree with?
A.High school students must go to bed before 10 p.m.
B.High schools should begin their school day at a later time.
C.Most schools should push forward the start of their school day.
D.Kids should shorten their sleep time gradually as they grow older.
2. The second paragraph mainly discusses ________.
A.why high school students should get more sleep
B.what’s life like for college students at present
C.why high school students feel sleepy in the classroom
D.how to lighten high school students’ homework load
3. The underlined word “shifts” probably means “________”.
A.arrivesB.reducesC.increasesD.changes
4. How do the teachers probably feel about the results of pushing backward the start of their school day?
A.Disappointed.B.Satisfied.C.Puzzled.D.Surprised.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了高中新生入学时所面临的一些问题并给出了合理的建议,同时本文还介绍了高中与初中的差异。

7 . You may not know a lot of people when you start senior high school. Maybe your friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school. Even if you know other freshmen (一年级学生), you still feel jittery that you don’t know any upperclassmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?

Most senior high schools hold the freshman orientation (迎新会) before school actually starts. It is helpful because you not only learn your way around the building but also get to meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.

When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.

The work in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced (高深的) knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.

Senior high school also has more after-school activities than junior high school, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.

Junior high school taught you the basics of time management and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. Senior high school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.

1. What does the underlined word “jittery” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Proud.B.Confident.C.Anxious.D.Bored.
2. What are freshmen probably worried about?
A.The learning task.B.The freshman orientation.
C.The ability to make friends.D.The relationship with teachers.
3. What do after-school activities mainly help students to do?
A.Develop friendships.B.Develop their interests.
C.Build up their strength.D.Improve their learning ability.
4. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.What you learned in junior high school.
B.The importance of being more independent.
C.How to improve yourself in senior high school.
D.The difference between junior high school and senior high school.

8 . Sharon, Aged 22

The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have for one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.

David, Aged 19

I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.

Frank, Aged 21

I think almost every kid feels both anxious and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!

Eddie, Aged 20

When I started high school I was really nervous and worried too, especially since I had been home schooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.

1. What can we infer from Sharon’s words about high school?
A.Teachers are quite strict.
B.Students often stay up at night.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了互联网英语已经成为来自世界最普通的语言,同时英语也在发生着变化。

9 . Online, English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is changing. There are now thought to be some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. Some language experts predict that within 10 years English will occupy the internet — but in forms very different to what we accept and recognize as English today.

That’s because people who speak English as a second language already outnumber native speakers. And increasingly, they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don’t have to worry about their accent (口音).

Users of Facebook already socialize in a number of different “Englishes” including Indian English, Spanish English and Korean English. While these different styles have long existed within their cultures, they’re now expanding and coming online. Technology companies are introducing newly-developed English words with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not already in the English dictionary. And most large companies have English websites, while smaller businesses are learning that they need a common language — English — to reach global customers.

The increasing popularity of the internet allows more languages to develop quickly. “Most people actually speak several languages — it’s less common to only speak one,” says Mr. Munro. “English has taken its place as the world’s common language, but it’s not pushing out other languages.” Instead, other languages are pushing their way into English, and in the process creating something new.

1. Which of the following is NOT true about online communication?
A.People need to spell exactly.B.Grammar is not so important.
C.People do not care about their accent.D.Most English-speakers are not native speakers.
2. What can we infer from the text?
A.We can only communicate online in English.
B.It’s impossible to find all the English words in the dictionary.
C.Some technology companies start to publish English dictionaries.
D.Smaller businesses are not allowed to have English websites.
3. What can we learn from what Mr. Munro said?
A.The other languages are enriching English.
B.One can’t live well without speaking several languages.
C.English will become the only language in the world.
D.Chinese used to be the world’s common language.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.English is a common language around the world.
B.There are now many different language styles.
C.English language is developing with the Internet.
D.Smaller businesses are learning a common language.

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。四个人表达了他们对放长暑假的看法。

10 . This idea is unkind. Children need to have a good holiday at the end of a busy school year. The long holidays give them time to do things they wouldn’t otherwise(不然) get to do. In my family we go to Ireland and see relatives and friends during the summer vacation. And it might seem long to some people, but time flies when you’re having fun.

—Ruby Mullin

I have good memories of my own long summer holidays, and I love the chance to have days out with my son. I think many parents, especially single parents like me, have made job choices based on being able to have time off for the summer—and now we’ve done that, we don’t want to see things changed.

—Viki Bantock

Having worked at a school that had a four-week summer break instead of the usual six, I’d say longer holidays are better. Teachers are under so much stress now to get good results; most put in lots of hours in the evening and at weekends and feel very tired by the end of term. There is no progress in learning after a six-week holiday, but it only takes a few weeks for students to get back up to speed.

—Marek Kaminski

A shorter summer holiday would be much better. The six-week break seems a thing for another age, when mothers didn’t work and your mum lived round the corner to give you a hand. If I was able to take a six-week holiday, great, I’d love it—but in the real world that isn’t possible. Instead, I end up spending around £600 on childcare for each week when I’m working.

—Nachelle Crowther

1. What does Ruby Mullin usually do during summer holidays?
A.She does part-time jobs.
B.She visits relatives and friends.
C.She prepares for the new school year.
D.She goes travelling around her country.
2. What do we know about Marek Kaminski?
A.He usually works overtime.
B.His family is very supportive.
C.His son doesn’t do well in school.
D.He doesn’t teach school any more.
3. Who holds a different idea from the other three people?
A.Ruby Mullin.
B.Viki Bantock.
C.Marek Kaminski.
D.Nachelle Crowther.
