On a day in Arkansas, some fishermen saw a bear cub (幼兽) in a tree. As hours went by, its mother didn't return. So they called wildlife biologist (生物学家) Eastridge.
The bear cub was sick and hungry, weighing only 5 pounds and with his eyes not completely open. Eastridge called Lisa Stewart, who works at Appalachian Bear Rescue in Tennessee. Stewart always makes room for a new cub.
She named the bear Miracle because she thought it was a miracle that he had survived! As soon as she could, she stopped having contact with the cub so he would not become too used to humans. When the cub arrived, Stewart cleaned his eyes and put him in a house alone. Since Miracle was already 5 months old, Stewart gave him bowls of food and another bowl of a special formula (配方奶粉), similar to a bear mother's milk. Sometimes, Miracle would reach his head out of his house and take some formula or food. But he wasn't eating too much.
Miracle was too weak to be with other bears. So Stewart gave him a toy bear named Buddy. He took it into his house and covered it with straw (稻草). He fed Buddy, too. Stewart often found the toy covered in formula and berries and its ears full of apple chunks. Now that Miracle had Buddy, he came out of his house more often and wanted to eat.
After two months, Stewart introduced Miracle to other bears so they could learn from one another. She avoided any direct contact with Miracle and the other bears. Stewart wanted to make sure they stayed afraid of humans so they could go back into the wild again. She always hid behind a fence (栅栏) and threw food over the top secretly. The bears hunted for this food as they would soon do in the wild.
Five months later, Rick Eastridge returned to pick up a healthy 90pound Miracle and another bear from Arkansas named Rocky. Eastridge loaded the bears into boxes on his truck and transported them back to the wild. As soon as the bear boxes were opened, the two cubs ran for the woods—where they belonged.

3 . It’s hard to avoid looking like a fool on April Fool’s Day. On April 1 each year, people play tricks on each other. These tricks are usually silly rather than mean. Classmates sometimes tie each other’s shoelaces to their chairs. Teachers might hand out an impossibly difficult surprise test that scares students before they realise it’s only a joke. Newspapers announce fake contests (such as “Win an elephant!”) and report on fake stories (like “UFO” lands in New York City).
Forget gifts, songs and special foods-those are for the other holidays of the year. On April Fool’s Day, the only tradition is to laugh (and maybe to cause a little bit of trouble).
One April Fool’s Day, when I was in high school, a group of students in my class played a very clever and funny trick on the teachers. They bought some chickens and set them free in our school cafeteria. The chickens ran all round the school, in and out of classrooms and under our feet. Feathers were flying everywhere.
Teachers began running after the chickens, trying to catch them. Finally, they caught four of them. But the chickens were wearing numbered tags around their necks, and the teachers discovered that they had only caught chickens NO. 1, 2, 3, and 5. Where was chicken No. 4?
The teachers looked and looked. They couldn’t find another chicken. After a few hours, they realised that the students had played another joke on them: There were only four chickens in the first place! They’d been tricked by the numbers on the chickens.
It’s been a long time since I was in high school, but that April Fool’s Day remains one of my favourite memories from those years.

5 . I began learning playing the violin when I was nine, and the next year I began studying under Natalie Ghent, who was my teacher until I left high school.
Once, Mrs Ghent held a concert for her students.I played near the end of it. After I played a while, I forgot the music. No matter how I tried, I couldn't think of it. So I had to stop and looked at the pianist's music. When the whole concert was over, I cried.
Mrs Ghent came to comfort me.Then she told us a good concert was coming, and she hoped I would go there with her. I remember that the concert was on my birthday in March. It was great, because it was Mischa Elman’s concert in the city concert hall. Mischa Elman is a famous musician. My teacher decided to buy the best tickets as my birthday present.
The city concert hall is quite beautiful with all the lights on. I had never been in such a concert hall before, and was impressed by the size as well. Mischa Elman’s playing was beautiful. However, Mrs Ghent whispered to me from time to time and told me he had forgotten something or played a wrong note, or had made some other kinds of mistakes.
When I teach students to play the violin now, I tell my students that in playing the instruments, if you are frightened of making mistakes, you will never play beautiful music.

6 . At thirteen, I was diagnosed with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.
In my first literature class, Mrs.Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes.I raised my hand right away and said,“Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems.I might not be able to do it.”
She looked at me through her glasses, “You are no different from your classmates, young man.”
I tried, but I didn't finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots, which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
The story encouraged me. My pen started to dance.I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was no different from others.I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I give up?
I didn't expect anything when I handled in my paper to Mrs.Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day—with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words: “See what you can do when you keep trying?”

8 . You’re enjoying a quiet evening at home when suddenly your neighbor’s dog starts barking(吠叫)and doesn’t stop. Sure, dogs need to bark every now and then, but if the barking is getting in the way of your daily life, you need to do something.
“Before you take action, make records of when the dog is disturbing,” says expert Sharon Schweitzer. “Record the dates and time when the barking appears to find out the features of the barking. Check them carefully and get your facts straight. You might notice the barking only happens when the owners are at work, or during thunderstorms.”
After two to three weeks, visit your neighbors with the facts. “Since you’re trying to keep a good relationship, you can’t go when you’re angry and frustrated,” says Schweitzer. Plus, your neighbors might not even realize the barking is a problem, for the worst noise may happen when they’re gone.
Explain the time when the barking gets bad, then suggest a way to solve the problem. “You can sit and complain all day, but that will go nowhere,” says Schweitzer. Ask if the dog can stay inside during the storm, or suggest a dog training class. Be open to compromise(妥协)because the owners might have other ideas about how to deal with the noise.
Befriending the dog could help. Have your neighbors introduce you to their dogs. “If they become more comfortable in your presence, they’re less likely to bark when they see you or when they’re in the backyard,”says Schweitzer. You might even be able to use commands such as “quiet” once the dog trusts you.
Avoid gossiping(说长道短)with other neighbors about the dog.“That’s when things escalate.” After all, most people will want to solve the problem.

9 . Going to a new school can feel like starting all over again. You may feel like sad or angry about leaving your old school or friend. You may feel excited about a new beginning or a “fresh start”. You may feel nervous about having to meet new people. All of these feelings are normal when you start at a new school.
Most kids worry about fitting in at their new school. It’s common for a new kid to feel like an outsider for the first few weeks. Although you can be lonely, you can help yourself fit in by being friendly. Even if you are nervous, try to smile, say hello and ask questions.
Here are two places where you might meet friends in a new school:
● The classroom: Look around you, is there anyone who you can talk to? Do you take part in group activities in class? If so, try to join a new group every time.
● Playground: Most schools offer many team sports. Try to join these sports.
Some kids worry about their teachers when they start a new school. Even if the teachers are supportive, it can take some time to adjust to new rules or ways of teaching. Try talking to them about your problem. Besides, with a familiar face in the front of your classroom you may feel more comfortable during the first few weeks of school.
