文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了实验室培养肉的发展和特点,以及其对环境、动物福利和人类健康的影响。

1 . For all of human history, eating meat has meant killing animals. But scientists behind lab grown meat say that’s no longer necessary. They produce meat by growing cells obtained from an animal’s body.

Lab-grown meat, also called “cell-cultivated” or “cultured” meat, is made by feeding a mix of nutrients to animal cells in steel tanks in labs. The idea is to create an alternative to agriculturally raised meat. And unlike other meat substitutes which are made from plant proteins and other ingredients, lab-grown meat is real meat. When ready, the meat is formed into shapes such as sausages or nuggets (块), and looks, smells and tastes like any other grocery store version.

Recently, the U. S. Department of Agriculture(USDA) has given two companies approval to sell lab-grown chicken. The approval launches a new era of meat production aimed at eliminating harm to animals, and reducing the environmental impacts of grazing(放牧) and growing feed for animals. Scientists warn that the typical way meat is produced now, in concentrated animal feeding operations, is a risk factor for the emergence of diseases. Lab-grown meat is more sustainable and can be produced without antibiotics, and without producing greenhouse gas emissions linked to animal agriculture.

“Everything we know about how meat can be made is going to change. But don’t expect to see cultivated meat in grocery stores just yet,” said Uma Valeti, CEO of UPSIDE Foods. Lab-grown chicken is much more expensive, because it cannot yet be produced on the scale of traditional meat.

“To make cultivated meat, energy use needs are high,” said Bruce Friedrich, president and founder of the Good Food Institute, a nonprofit group that promotes alternative proteins. However, the disadvantage of high energy needs will be offset by the reduction in land and water use and other benefits. If cultured meat is produced on a large scale, it could also offer a solution to feeding the world’s growing population.

1. What do we know about lab-grown meat?
A.It is abundant in plant proteins.
B.It can be bought in grocery stores.
C.It is generated from animals’ cells.
D.It tastes more delicious than traditional meat.
2. What is the potential benefit of lab-grown meat?
A.More nutrition consumed by eaters.
B.Lower costs for restaurants.
C.Improvements in traditional agriculture.
D.Positive impacts on climate change and animals.
3. What problem does the author mention in paragraph 4?
A.It is hard to produce lab-grown meat in quantity.
B.The USDA doesn’t approve the sale of lab-grown meat.
C.Many people raise doubts about the safety of lab-grown meat.
D.Lab-grown meat can disturb competition in the meat industry.
4. What does the underlined word “offset” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Balanced.B.Satisfied.C.Increased.D.Exchanged.

文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章主要讲述青少年和父母之间发生的冲突及解决方案。

2 . Conflict (冲突) between teenagers and parents happens for a lot of reasons. Sometimes conflict happens between teenagers and parents just because conflict happens between human beings anyway. Humans have different needs, different feelings, different opinions about what they want, and the relationship with people can be really difficult. However, teenagers can cause further conflict because of the hormonal (生理的) changes that are happening and the stage of life that they're in.

Teenagers and parents have different understanding about rules and at times they find it difficult to look into the future. So parents and teenagers will often experience conflict about many things, do chores, homework, whether teenagers speak respectfully or not and about what they're allowed to do.

Before we think about rule boundaries (界线) for teenagers, we need to make sure that we have a really good relationship base. There's no point saying “From now on, you have to listen to me”: if you don't have a positive relationship with your teenager. We need to go back and make sure there is some degree of shared respect, and some degree of positive communication and enjoyment being together. you do that first, it means that rule boundaries are a lot easier to set up.

Often we're dealing with conflict on the fly. This is not the right time to be dealing with it. We really want parents and teenagers to sit down and think about the kinds of things that may happen in the house before the problems come. The more detailed your rule boundaries are for teenagers, the more likely it is that they are going to follow them. So this means we don't have rule boundaries like “Have the bathroom cleaned”. It needs to be “The floors mopped, nothing on the countertop and the mirrors cleaned by ten o'clock every Saturday”: Rule boundaries need to be written down, and set out ahead of time so the teenager knows exactly what's expected.

1. What's important to set up a rule boundary easily for teenagers?
A.Being strict from the start.B.Developing a good relationship with them first.
C.Saying"No" to their requirements.D.Avoiding close talks with them.
2. Which of the following rules are teenagers most likely to follow?
A.Doing some housework.B.Having a good reading habit.
C.Cleaning the bathroom.D.Finishing your homework by five.
3. What do the underlined words "on the fly" in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.In a hurry.B.On the plane.C.By oneself.D.Another day.
4. What's the best title for the text?
A.Growing PainsB.Teenage Problems
C.Parent-Child Conflict and SolutionsD.Knowing the Conflict

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一家日本出版公司对废纸的处理。

3 . People have different ways of dealing with waste paper, specifically used newspapers. Some put them in the recycling area, while others keep them as wrappers (包装纸). While these are both good measures, a Japanese publishing company had a better idea for their end use.

The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd. invented the “Green Newspaper”, which allows people to grow plants with it. This unique newspaper was published on Greenery Day, which is focused on environmental news and made of green paper with seeds placed into it. What makes it even more special is the ink (油墨) used to print words and photos, which is made from plants. The publisher advises readers to tear the used newspaper into small pieces and plant them in a container with soil. They should water them, like they would do for any plant. Within a few weeks, the seeds will grow into plants.

This brilliant concept was invented by Dentsu Inc., one of Japan’s most famous advertising agencies, which works with the publishing company on the initiative (倡议). The publisher’s belief is environmental sustainability (持续性). As its mission statement says, “The Mainichi doesn’t take action only through information, but also by solving global issues.” With joint efforts, this initiative has reached the corners of Japan and sold around millions of copies daily. Other such initiatives producing plantable paper are also seen in India and the US.

About 95 million trees are lost for producing newspapers every year. The Internet, the number of whose users stands for 62.5 percent of the population worldwide, has influenced how people read news and the print readership has dropped greatly. However, the reinvention and reimagination of this newspaper will bring about a change in the publishing industry as well as having an environmental influence.

1. What do we know about the “Green Newspaper”?
A.It uses high-tech materials.
B.It provides energy for seeds.
C.It’s printed with plant-based ink.
D.It’s published to celebrate Greenery Day.
2. What message does the publisher’s mission statement convey?
A.It’s easier said than done.
B.Everything comes to him who waits.
C.Many hands make light work.
D.Actions speak louder than words.
3. What’s the author’s attitude to the “Green Newspaper”?
A.Doubtful.B.Supportive.
C.Indifferent.D.Negative.
4. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.About 59 million trees are lost for producing newspapers.
B.The Internet has changed the way people read news totally.
C.The popularity of the Internet leads to the fall of the print readership.
D.The “Green Newspaper” will encourage more people to protect the environment.

The five-hour bus ride takes passengers on an 83-kilometer journey aboard a regular double-decker bus. Not only is the Sleeping Bus Tour the first of its kind, it's also the longest bus route in Hong Kong, ensuring that tired passengers have plenty of time to enjoy some sleep.

When passengers board the bus, they are treated with a goodie bag complete with an eye mask and earplugs to help them sleep and they are allowed to bring their own blankets and slippers. The long ride includes a few stops for scenic spots and bathroom breaks. Passengers can also get off the bus if they’d prefer to continue their sleep at home rather than complete the entire journey. Tickets for the Sleeping Bus Tour are divided in four kinds from the “Zero-decibel (分贝) Sleeping Cabin“ to the ”VIP Cabin.” Prices range from about $17 USD to $115 USD per person. 文章大意:这是一篇说明文,如今市场上充斥着各种“无糖食品”和“无糖饮料”,它们对我们的健康究竟有着怎样的影响呢?

6 . Sugar-free cookies, reduced-sugar cereal, sugar-free candy, diet soda... are these better for you? Since sugar became a taboo (禁忌) in the nutrition and wellness world, sugar-free food items and drinks have acted as alternatives for once beloved sweet drinks and snacks. Claiming to be ZERO sugar means it is healthier, better for diabetics, and helps you slim down... Right?

In fact, sugar-free is worse. Sugar-free means that artificial sweeteners (甜味剂) are used instead of real sugar. The problem: these sweeteners do not come from natural sources and they can cause you more harm than good.

Let’s get into what these artificial sweeteners actually are. Sugar-free sugar sounds wrong and that’s because there is no such thing as sugar-free sugar. Some of these sugar-free alternatives still contain sugar and the ones that don’t contain sugar have chemicals your body often does not know how to process.

Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar, so only a tiny amount is needed. That’s why they can market sugar-free alternatives as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”. It also means that you get no nutritional value from consuming them, which is why many sugar-free substitutes are classified as “non-nutritive”. These artificial sweeteners tend to hide under sneaky names. Actually, they are 200-600 times sweeter than sugar.

When you eat sweet stuff, your body continues to desire it and, even though your body cannot metabolize (代谢) these sugar-free alternatives, your brain does not know the difference. In turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain and type 2 diabetes (糖尿病).

Artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugar, which impacts everything you eat. In other words, your body doesn’t know how to handle artificial sweeteners because they have nothing real to process.

A good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar. In the war against artificial sweeteners and real sugar, both lose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with natural sugars that come from fruits and stay away from products claiming to be sugar-free or diet!

1. Why are sugar-free alternatives described as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”?
A.They won’t lead to weight gain.
B.They are greener and healthier.
C.They are much to everyone’s taste.
D.Small quantities of artificial sweeteners are used.
2. What do we know about artificial sweeteners?
A.They present a bigger health risk.
B.They can be easily broken down.
C.They are as sweet as sugar.
D.They improve our ability to metabolize.
3. What is the author’s final conclusion?
A.Real sugar is a better choice.
B.Stay away from sugary products.
C.Sugar-free products are healthier.
D.Choose sugar from natural sources.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项研究,研究表明,教会孩子与他人产生共鸣可以显著地提高他们的创造力,并可能带来其他一些好处。

7 . Teaching children in a way that encourages them to empathize (产生共鸣) with others is of great significance to children’s creativity, new research suggests.

Pupils at two inner London schools were involved in the study. Pupils at one school spent the year following curriculum-prescribed lessons, while the other group’s lessons used a set of engineering design thinking tools which aim to develop students’ ability to think creatively and to cause empathy, while solving real-world problems.

Pupils at the intervention school were asked to design an asthma-treatment “pack” for children aged six and under. Pupils were given various creative and empathetic “tools” in order to do so: for example, they were shown data about the number of childhood asthma deaths in the U.K., and a video which describes a young child having an attack. They also explored the problem and tested their design ideas by role-playing various stakeholder (参与方) — patients, family members and medical staff.

Both sets of pupils were assessed for creativity at both the start and end of the school year. The results showed a statistically significant increase in creativity among pupils at the intervention school, where the thinking tools were used. At the start of the year, the creativity scores of pupils in the control school, which followed the standard curriculum, were 11% higher than those at the intervention school. By the end, however, the situation had completely changed: creativity scores among the intervention group were 78% higher than the control group.

Nicholl, the leading researcher of the study, said, “Teaching for empathy has been problematic despite being part of the National Curriculum for over two decades. This evidence suggests that it is a missing link in the creative process, and vital if we want education to encourage the designers and engineers of tomorrow.”

1. What were pupils at the intervention school asked to do?
A.Watch the process of an asthma attack.
B.Gather data about asthma deaths in children.
C.Show sympathy for the young asthma sufferers.
D.Test their asthma-treatment “pack” on patients.
2. What does the research find about the pupils in the control school?
A.They preferred to study the standard curriculum.
B.They were smarter at the beginning of the school year.
C.They had little empathy for the young children with asthma.
D.There were less creative than those at the intervention school in the end.
3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Empathy education and creativity go hand in hand.
B.Empathy education was neglected in the creative process.
C.Empathy education is a must for future designers and engineers.
D.Empathy education hasn’t been included in the National Curriculum.
4. What’s the passage mainly about?
A.The standard curriculum limits pupils’ creativity.
B.Teaching pupils empathy improves their creative abilities.
C.Solving real-world problems promotes pupils’ all-round development.
D.An asthma-treatment “pack” was created by pupils at a London school.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一处位于意大利的水下雕塑公园正在守护着大海,捍卫它的海洋环境。

8 . In the blue-green depths of the sea off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, an unusual seafloor sculpture park is defending its watery setting.

Since fisherman Paolo Fanciulli’s teens, he has been heading out daily to fish in these coastal waters along the Maremma coastline. It was in the 1980s that he began to notice the clear signs: a seabed that was becoming barren (贫瘠的), with exhausted fish stocks. Until recently, he has been forced to share catches with a threatening part: illegal “bottom trawlers (拖网捕鱼的人)”, who randomly spoil a large quantity of ocean life as they fish, dragging a weighted net along the seafloor behind their boats.

Fanciulli’s style of artisanal fishing (手工捕鱼), in contrast, needs to be friendly to nature as damaging the ecosystem could reduce fishermen’s income. Fanciulli understood that the success of his fishing activity was linked to the good state of the environment. The underwater “House of Fish” sculpture park, which was started in 2015 was encouraged by this fisherman. “One of the most effective solutions is to physically prevent trawling through artificial reefs…so I started working on this project, trying to combine the protection of the seabed with something that could also give an added value to our environment, something as beautiful as a sculpture,” he said.

Rocks or sculptures can break weighted trawler nets. They can also play a role as artificial reefs, giving corals and other sea life a place to live. Thanks to the underwater sculptures, some species not seen in a long while such as groupers and lobsters have returned. The sculpture park represents both an artistic statement and a physical barrier to seafloor trawling.

Today, 39 huge stone sculptures dot the seabed along an area of Tuscan coastline near the town of Talamone. In the immediate future, Fanciulli hopes to continue his great solution in coastal waters. “Man is still destroying the seas,” he says, “and my task continues.”

1. What poses a threat to Fanciulli’s work of artisanal fishing?
A.Rocks on the seafloor.B.Frequent terrible weather.
C.A growing number of fishermen.D.Illegal trawling industry.
2. Why was the underwater sculpture park built?
A.To show artists’ creativity.
B.To develop the local green tourism.
C.To protect the ecosystem of the sea.
D.To warn against fishing in coastal waters.
3. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The results of banning seafloor trawling.
B.The process of building the sculpture park.
C.The damaging effects of trawling on sea life.
D.The roles of the sculpture park under the sea.
4. What could be the best title for this text?
A.The first underwater park in the world
B.Fanciulli’s innovation in cleaning the ocean
C.A seafloor park: Artworks for sea protection
D.Waters with sculptures: Better habitats for fish

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项科学研究,解释了长期以来困扰人们的疑问:蝴蝶为什么能够迅速起飞从而逃过被抓的危险。

9 . We often see beautiful butterflies flying around us. If you have ever tried to catch a resting butterfly, you know it is surprisingly difficult. A new study helps explain why.

Previous research had suggested that a butterfly’s overhead wing clap forces the insect forward. Researchers thought the wing clap likely formed a pocket of air that shoots out like a jet. But no one had tested that until now.

To analyze their flight, they placed six butterflies one at a time inside a wind cave which was filled with smoke and then used a laser (激光灯) to light up the smoke just behind the butterfly. Four high-speed cameras were placed in the cave to take photos of the movement of the butterfly and the smoke as the butterfly was taking off. This let the researchers create a 3D picture of that air movement as the insect flapped its wings.

They analyzed a total of 25 takeoffs by six butterflies. Each included up to three wing beats after takeoff. The butterflies proved more likely to clap their wings together during the first few wing beats than later in flight.

The photos show that forces created by the wings give rise to a flight path. The butterflies rise as their wings move down and shoot forward as their wings move up. A wing clap on takeoff, paired with a quick turn, allowed the butterflies to fly away quickly. They also noticed the wings formed an air pocket just before clapping and that the wings’ flexibility and this pocket improved the jet force created by the clap.

“The study is exciting,” says Ayodeji Bode-Oke, a mechanical engineer in Charlottesville. That means “we have solved the longtime puzzle about how butterflies fly, and it proves nothing is impossible on the road of scientific research. I can’t wait to learn about how the study might inform designs for small flying vehicles.”

1. Why was laser used in the experiment?
A.To frighten the butterflies into flying.
B.To help take clear photos of air movement.
C.To help researchers observe the butterflies.
D.To guide the butterflies through the smoke.
2. What is the finding of the research according to paragraph 5?
A.Butterflies fly forward as wings move down.
B.An air pocket forms after butterflies clap wings.
C.Upward wing movements help butterflies fly forward.
D.Butterflies beat wings three times before taking off.
3. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Why Can Butterflies Fly Like a Jet?
B.How Can Butterflies Make Wing Claps?
C.How Can Butterflies Make Quick Turns?
D.Why Can Butterflies Run Away Quickly?

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文主要说明了日记和博客的不同之处,作者结合自身的经历,分别分析了两者的优点和缺点。

10 . Years ago, if a teenager had some problems in his or her life, he or she might write in his or her diary. Now a teenager with the same problems might go onto the Internet and write about them in a blog. In many ways, a diary and a blog are almost the same. So, what makes a blog different from a diary?

The biggest difference is that a blog is much more public than a diary. Usually, a teenager treats his or her diary like a book full of secrets. Both diaries and blogs tell what happened to the writer that day.

I have a little sister, and sometimes I go online to read her blog. She writes about things like waking up early for swimming practice and not studying enough for her chemistry exam. When I was her age, I wrote about the same things, but only in my diary. Then, after I finished writing. I would hide my diary in a secret place because I was worried that my sister might read it!

Because a blog is such a public way of writing. It has both good and bad points. The biggest problem with a blog is that anyone can read what you write. If I am angry with a friend during school and write something bad about her in my diary, she will never know. However, if my sister writes something bad about a friend, that friend may read her blog and get angry. So we have to be very careful of what we write.

A blog has good point, of course. People choose to write in blogs because they know that their friends will read what they write. If I am feeling sad one day and write in my diary, “Nobody cares about me.” No one will know about it. However, if my sister writes the same words in her blog. Her best friends will quickly and tell her how much they like her.

If people are careful about what they write, blogs are a very good way to write about everyday life. However, I still prefer my old diary!

1. The biggest difference between a blog and a diary is that ________.
A.a blog is more popularB.a blog is more convenient
C.a blog has more good pointsD.a blog is more public
2. Why did the writer hide the diary after finishing writing?
A.Because he didn’t want his sister to read it.
B.Because he thought his family would read it.
C.Because he liked hiding everything.
D.Because he was worried that what he wrote made his sister angry.
3. Which one is NOT the writer’s idea?
A.A diary is safer than a blog.
B.A diary and a blog are almost the same in many ways.
C.Blogs can help people stay in contact with their friends.
D.Blogs are the best way to write about everyday life.
4. The passage mainly talks about ________.
A.the teenagers’ problems in their livesB.the differences between a diary and a blog
C.the good points of writing blogsD.different ways to write about everyday life
