4 . When James Haskell started playing professional rugby football, technology’s influence was very limited. One of its first and important uses within the game, he says, was just urine testing (尿检). “A lot has changed since then. Now all the players wear GPS heart-rate monitors,” the former England and Wasps ruby union player says. Data and technology have become important parts of a professional sports team and its players’ lives, Haskell says.
But this is only the beginning.
“New 5G will bring a whole set of new devices to the sports industry and the connectivity of supply chains that isn’t possible today,” explains Scott Petty, the chief technology officer of Vodafone UK. Vodafone’s recent research shows 70 per cent of decision-makers in the sports industry believe it is behind other industries in adopting new technology.
However, things are changing gradually. The research suggests that 76 per cent of sports leaders say new 5G technology will drive innovation ( 革新) within their organisations. According to research, sport is an area where new 5G will have a huge impact. It has the ability to transform the fan experience and help athletes improve their fitness and training programmes. Around 74 per cent of sports leaders believe 5G will help meet rising fan expectations.
Haskell is looking forward to seeing what 5G will enable in the future. Vodafone’s new 5G network was launched ( 推 出) in July. At the launch, two Wasps players demonstrated an innovative use of the tech when they conducted a joint training session, despite being 100 miles apart. At an event in London, Will Rowlands tackled (擒抱摔倒) a bag and almost at the same time, through wearable devices, De Jongh felt the force of the tackle.
Going forwards, Haskell expects that players will be able to quantify (量化) their performance in new ways. The key to this? The ability to read real‑time data and make training programmes completely personalised. Haskell says: “This ability will be awesome and you’ll suddenly be able to quantify everything!”
This will be game-changing.

I was 400 meters from the finish line when my legs stopped working during the State cross-country race. In a moment faster than I could imagine, I watched my dreams crash helplessly to the ground. Lifting my face from the dirt, I looked up and saw my dad’s face.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it into the top fifteen. We had been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and was proud of my success in running.
He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips to see me run. He pushed me. He cheered for me. He believed in me. We pounded miles and miles into our running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a dream passed on from one generation to the next.
I’ll never forget that day. It was hotter than normal — too hot, I waited for the gun to fire. This was the day we had waited so long for. I glanced at the crowd; dozens of familiar faces from school came into my view. They had come for me. I saw my dad set his watch, worry and excitement appeared on his face. Adrenaline (肾上腺素) flowed through my body, and the race began.
For the first 2.5 miles, I felt great. I’d never been so ready for something. Determination focused my mind and guided my steps. As in all of my races, I didn’t star out in the front. I loved the feeling of passing people as my endurance (耐力) overtook their premature speed.
Without warning, my strength began to disappear. My lungs fought to take in enough air, and my feet became stuck. I still don’t know what happened in those last few moments. Neck and neck with my greatest competitors, I could see the finish line, but nothing I could do would make my legs hold my weight. They were as weak as cotton.

10 . Over the past years, experts have carried out much research to explore different ways to encourage children’s learning. Especially, there has been a common focus on how physical activity, separated from the learning activities, can improve children’s learning. However, there has been less of a focus aimed at the possibility of integrating (合并) physical activity into the learning activities.
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen did the Basketball Mathematics study at five Danish elementary schools, the main purpose of which is to develop a learning activity that integrates basketball and mathematics and examine how it might affect children’s motivation (动机) for mathematics. 756 children from 40 different classes participated in the project, where about half of them—once a week for six weeks—had Basketball Mathematics during gym class, while the other half played basketball without mathematics.
“During classes with Basketball Mathematics, the children had to collect numbers and perform calculations (计算) related to various basketball exercises. An example could be counting how many times they could shoot a goal from three meters away vs at a onemeter distance, and adding up the numbers. Both the math and basketball elements could be adapted to suit the children’s levels, as well as being changed for whether it was addition, division or some other operations that needed practicing,” explains Linn Damsgaard, a leading researcher.
The results indicated that children’s motivation for math integrated with basketball was 16% higher compared to classroom math learning. Children also experienced a 14% increase in self-determination compared with classroom teaching. At the same time Basketball Mathematics had their math confidence improved.
“We are planning to do extra research to examine whether the Basketball Mathematics model can strengthen performance in mathematics. Once we have the ultimate results, we hope that they will inspire school teachers and headmasters to give priority to more physical activity and movement in such subjects. Eventually, we hope to succeed in putting these tools into school system and daily education,” says Associate Professor Jacob Wienecke.
