5 . The triathlon is a demanding sport. Many say that it is a real test of an athlete’s body and mind. It is difficult because it is three sports in one. It includes swimming for 13. 86 kilometers, bicycling for 180 kilometers, and running for 42. 2 kilometers. The top triathletes finish all three events in about 8 hours.
This sport is a real challenge. First, it takes time to train for competitions. Some people spend up to 8 months training for the race. Second, it takes money to compete. The equipment is not cheap. Bicycles for this event can cost up to$10, 000. Top-quality swimming gear (用具) and running shoes are expensive. Third, athletes must have strong minds. It takes willpower (意志力) to push themselves to keep training to reach their goal.
The triathlon is a recent sport. Triathlons began in California in the early 1970s. In 1978, competitors held the first professional triathlon race in Hawaii. In 1982, this race became famous because of the televised performance of Julie Moss. It was her first competition. Exhausted, she was running toward the finish line. Suddenly, 3 meters before the line, she fell down. She tried to get up, but she kept falling. She finally crawled (爬) across the finish line. She lost that year, but she tried again. Finally, in 1985, she won. This was the start of the triathlon's popularity.
Today, triathlons are much more popular among ordinary athletes. People of all ages can compete, as long as they are in good physical condition. In fact, it has become a great family sport. Triathletes are special people who have time in their lives for careers (事业) and families. Most are highly educated and earn top salaries (薪水) in their jobs. Many triathletes are happily married. In fact, two-thirds of triathletes say that their training has a positive influence on their marriages. Today, the triathlon is an Olympic sport and a respected event worldwide.

6 . To get in shape soon, some people use “quick” methods without realizing that these methods can put their overall health in danger. For example, they lose weight by eating fat-free food. It’s true that consuming(消耗)fewer fats can help you get in shape sooner, but low fat foods like dried fruits, nuts, beans, etc, actually contain high amounts of calories. For example, fruit juice contains no fat, but has high calories, so drinking more than one glass of fruit juice won’t help in losing weight.
To rely only on fruit and vegetable juice to lose weight is also a wrong method. By replacing your meal with only juice, you decrease the calorie intake(卡路里摄取量)greatly. It’ll help lose weight, but it can make you lack energy, leading to headaches, stomach disorders, etc.
It’s true that exercise helps to keep healthy weight, but it’ll probably not help you much if you don’t take care of your diet by reducing your calorie intake. If you believe you can exercise every day and eat as much as you want, you’re incorrect. For healthy weight loss, you need to burn more calories than you consume. So, you need to limit the intake of food.
Wrong weight loss methods are dangerous. So if in doubt, you’d better ask a doctor before starting weight loss. Luckily, it’s possible to lose weight with healthy methods. For example, follow healthy food habits, exercise regularly for 20-30 minutes every day, and go on with a healthy lifestyle even after you lose weight. Anyway, as you don’t gain weight overnight, it can’t be lost in a short time either. Give yourself some time. Although healthy methods may take a bit longer to work, they’re surely good for your body.

10 . A bunch of strangers showed up at the gym in the early morning of the last Sunday of April. A few athletes were already stretching their arms, but most of us could barely focus. As I was burning off last night's wrong decision—a big meal, I spotted a poster about a gym's 21-day workout challenge, and I immediately signed up. I always wanted to train for a marathon, so I considered this as my warm-up. Besides, I needed to stop being lazy and this was my chance to make a change.
It was easy to promise on paper, but three weeks of recommended exercise routines and diet restrictions wouldn't be easy. I stuck to working out 30 minutes a day, and I didn't disturb my normal routine. Instead, I had to be faced with the tough work of being more creative in my spare time, thus breaking some bad habits.
Overcoming weaknesses with willpower was my goal for the next part of the journey. But the difficult part about making a challenge is realizing that “wanting" and “doing" are two very different things. Just like a career, you have to physically work for it rather than just wait for it to happen. But that's hard. Throughout the 21 days, I often told myself that the challenge was meaningless and tried to sabotage myself from exercising. However, finally I overcame that negative thought and kept working out.
At the end of the challenge, I learned something even more important: Feeling the results is better than seeing them. I had fewer headaches and more energy, and was simply happier. I even felt a little smarter as I researched which foods were better for my body, and learned how to make healthier meals. I felt a sense of accomplishment, too, because even though I wanted to give up dozens of times, I didn't. I felt my waist got smaller and my arms got stronger, and I no longer felt guilty after having a piece of cake or a drink.
