1 . The days when art was an Olympic sport
Did you know that creating works of art used to be an Olympic competition?
The idea to include art in the Olympics came from Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who was the founder of the International Olympic Committee, which created the modern Olympics. Coubertin believed that the arts and sports were linked and was impressed by anyone who had a firm command of both a sport and an artistic discipline.
Why aren’t the arts included in the Olympics today?
For starters, only amateurs were allowed to compete in the arts part of the Olympics.
Secondly, works of art created had to have sports as the subject matter.
Finally, one of the biggest reasons was that the arts are subjective. Sports can be judged by time and distance, making it easy to determine who is the winner.

3 . The FIFA World Cup 2022, the world’s greatest football tournament, is set to begin in Qatar on November 21, 2022.
The FIFA World Cup is being held in the Middle East for the first time and is being hosted by an Asian country for the second time. The nation, which draws visitors from all around the world, promises to host the most expensive World Cup ever.
By land size, Qatar is the smallest nation to have ever hosted a FIFA World Cup. Switzerland, which hosted the 1954 FIFA World Cup, is the next-smallest nation. Qatar became the second nation to host the major competition without ever making it to an earlier round of competition. Qatar has a population of 2.8 million, which is comparable to that of Yorkshire. However, because of its size, it has the highest per capita income in the world.
A FIFA World Cup is an expensive event, and since 1994, there has been a general upward trend in the costs connected with hosting the most famous tournament.
The nation has already spent around $200 billion. The nation spends $500 million per week on infrastructure(基础设施) projects, new stadiums, hotels, hospitals, and airports. According to Qatar’s finance minister, Ali Shareef AI-Emadi, preparations for the World Cup are almost complete.
A huge amount of soccer fans are expected to arrive in the country (about 1.2— 1.5 million). Due to concerns about a shortage of housing, the nation has already spent $40 million on hotels.
The estimated cost of Qatar’s 2022 FIFA World Cup is $220 billion. The historic tournament’s most costly edition is expected to be this one. Fans are surprised with the World Cup’s luxury and fascination, but there is also plenty of controversy(争议).

4 . The astronauts working on the International Space Station, the ISS, have started their zero-gravity preview of the World Cup match on Thursday, June 26, between the United States and Germany.
NASA astronauts Steve Swanson and Reid Wiseman and European astronaut Alexander Gerst, called out from Germany, showed off their moves in a soccer exhibition aboard the orbiting lab recently. An American video released today shows their performing space bicycle kicks, headers and, as players tend to do here on the earth, celebrating happily after scoring goals.
NASA’s humanoid (仿真) robot Robonaut 2, which is designed to help astronauts perform, even gets into the spirit, waving its arms this way and that.
The weightless action tells a key World Cup game on Thursday in Brazil featuring the two teams currently at the top of the match’s so-called “group of Death”.
The winner will win the group and move on to the single-elimination (淘汰) “knockout stage” of the World Cup, while the loser may go home, depending on what happens in Thursday’s game between Ghana and Portugal, the other two teams in the group. Two teams from the group will advance. If the U. S. and Germany tie, they both will move on to the next stage.
Swanson, Wiseman and Gerst are obviously fond of the World Cup. The three space-flyers also played micro-gravity(微重力) soccer in another video that NASA posted on June 11, the day before the World Cup kicked off.
“We want to wish all the teams and fans on the ground and in Brazil a great World Cup,” Gerst said in that video, “Have fun and have peaceful games. May the best win.” The three astronauts make up half of the space station’s current Expedition 40. The other three crew members are Russian cosmonauts Alexander Skvortsov, Oleg Artemyev and Maxim Suraev.

7 . We all know that regular exercise is vitally important for both a healthy mind and body. Research has shown that just five minutes of exercise in a “green space” can help people to keep mentally healthy.
Let’s take a look at some ways to get close to nature and make them a part of your regular exercise routine.
Get on your bike
Cycling is a cheap, easy and fun way to get some good exercise in the outdoors. Try leaving your car at home and cycling to work one day, if that’s possible. Or get the family together and go on a weekend bike ride. Check out the local cycle paths before you go, and plan a safe route. Make sure you take some healthy snacks with you to keep your energy levels up.
Try some outdoor yoga
Practising yoga can be great for reducing anxiety and aiding relaxation, so why not take your yoga mat and try out some asanas (yoga postures) in the open air? Yoga is great for stretching tight muscles and increasing flexibility as well as improving mobility, control and breathing. Why not finish your practice with some quiet meditation to further calm the mind?
Go running
Instead of spending hours on the treadmill (跑步机), grab a friend and go off for a jog around your local park, or some nature trails. If you are used to running on a treadmill, you may find it harder at first, so make sure you have some good, supportive running shoes. You could also find out where your nearest parkrun events are. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in.

8 . Many times, sports events can be really competitive Athletes go through great stress both in their training and during performance, all for that number one position. For one Spanish athlete, Ivan Anaya, it was exactly that respect for the great hard work and devotion to the sports that made him lose on purpose.
During a cross-country race in Burlada, Navarre, the Kenyan athlete Abel Mutai was well ahead of Ivan. But then, thinking he had already reached the finish line, he started slowing down in his pace. He still had 10 meters ahead of him. Anyone else in second position might have taken advantage of that mistake but not Ivan. Ivan stayed behind Abel, and using hand signals, he guided Abel to the finish line.
Later, Ivan spoke about his decision, which might stun many people. Ivan said, “I just did what I had to do. He was the rightful winner. He was far ahead of me and I couldn’t have caught him up if he hadn’t made a mistake. As soon as I saw he was stopping, I knew I wasn’t going to pass him.”
Ivan’s coach, former Spanish runner Martin Fiz, said he would not have thought to do the same thing. “It was a very good gesture (姿态) of honesty,” said Fiz. “A gesture that I myself wouldn’t have made. I certainly would have taken advantage of it to win.”
Ivan hoped it would spread a message about the importance of honesty. “But I also think that having done what I did has earned more fame than if I had won,” he added. “And that is very important, because today in all circles, in soccer and in society, honesty is a must for a person to go far.”
