文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍4个世界上最奇怪的比赛。

1 . Here’s a selection of the strangest races in the world.

Surf Dog Competition

Hundreds of participants from all over the US come to fight for the first prize. This annual event is an official dog surfing competition taking place in Imperial Beach in August and Huntington Beach in September. The attendance to the event is free of charge, however, donations are welcome.

Bring Your Own Big Wheel Race

If you think wheel toys are designed for kids only, you’re wrong. The race was initiated by John Brumit in 2000 when he rode down Lombard Street on his plastic wheel toy. That day, he was the only participant in the race. He continued his tradition every year, but few joined him. In 2006, someone posted a video of his race and as a result, the next year’s race featured hundreds of participants though there was no prize money. Since then, the annual race has been held on Easter Sunday in San Francisco.

World’s Ugliest Dog Contest

It’s an annual event held in June in Petaluma, California. But it’s not about making fun of the ugly dogs, but about encouraging them and showing the world that such dogs can also be happy and adorable. The competition has been held since the 1970s. The winner gets a check for $1,000.

Fur Rondy

Like the famous Spanish Bullfighting Festival, Alaska has its own tradition. It’s a bit transformed. Speedy reindeer (驯鹿) run after the participants in the race. This event is held every February in Anchorage, Alaska. Participants pay a small fee to attend it; some of them wear funny dresses, which children enjoy very much.

1. Of the following races, which is held in two places?
A.Fur Rondy.B.Bring Your Own Big Wheel Race.
C.Surf Dog Competition.D.World’s Ugliest Dog Contest.
2. What made Bring Your Own Big Wheel Race popular quickly?

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。作者讲述了自己1984年时传递奥运火炬的一段心路历程。

2 . I carried the flame in 1984 in the torch relay (火炬传递)as it made its way across the country to the Olympics in Los Angeles. What an honour that was! I wasn’t an Olympic athlete. My dad did some voluntary work for the Olympics, for which I was offered the opportunity.

On one May night, the flame began its route across America, covering 15,000 kilometres. It inched its way up the coast from New York, each runner carrying it for a kilometre. Some of the runners were legendary (享有盛名的), like the granddaughter of gold medaled Jesse Owen. Others were common people like me and supporters of the cause.

I had been sent a uniform and the official torch. I held it as I stood waiting for the flame to arrive. Part of me wondered if it would even arrive. Would they ever find enough runners to cover that enormous distance? Other people were huddled (挤在一起)in the dark on the sidewalk. What would they see?

All at once it happened. A runner appeared and lit my torch. I was sent on my way, jogging down the highway. There was no question whether I had worried about finding my way in the dark. People lined the road, clapping and shouting as I passed. Actually, it was not for me but for the cause that I represented. Soon, I passed the flame on to the next runner, who would pass it along to the next until it finally reached gold medalist Rafer Johnson who would carry it into the L. A. Coliseum.

How lucky I was to play a part! But I think we all have these opportunities to carry the torch, for we are all the light of the world. Therefore, why not let your light shine?

1. What do the underlined words “the cause” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The Olympics.B.The voluntary work
C.The torch relay.D.The wonderful competition.
2. How did the author feel when waiting for the flame to arrive?
A.Excited.B.Disappointed.C.WorriedD.Satisfied.
3. Why did the people on the sidewalk clap?
A.To encourage him to move faster.B.To show their support for him.
C.To praise the career he chose.D.To cheer for the Olympic spirits.
4. What can we infer about the author in the text?
A.He thought little of being a torch carrier
B.He preferred to see others carry the torch.
C.He felt proud of having such an experience
D.He advised us to value every chance we have.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

How exciting! Today is my basketball Grand-final! My team of six enthusiastic boys led by our coach, Jack, has worked extremely hard just to make the finals. My heart was pounding a hundred kilometres an hour as I walked into our home ground. As I hurried to our team bench, our opponents caught my attention. They seemed a lot taller and “meaner” looking.

Whistle blew. Five of us started on the court. Our opponent got hold of the ball first. They were unbelievably fast. They kept breaking our defences and kept scoring goals. Excited parents were cheering so much that their faces were as red as beetroots. Even our best, Bryce, could not stop our opponents from scoring, which annoyed him a lot. By half time, both teams were extremely exhausted and our opponents were ten goals ahead, which presented us with an enormous but achievable challenge.

Jack was awfully anxious as we were not playing anywhere near our best. He told us that we could still win if we made our transitions much quicker so that penalty shots came our way.He also directed us to rebound (抢断篮板) and position ourselves better to receive and score goals. Most important, he reminded us to play as a team.

Our team was all fired up. The second half started in our favour. We were as quick as lightning on the court. We were dribbling (运球), passing, shooting and rebounding without any mistakes. We caught our opponents by surprise. The scores were almost level. We were trailing only by one point. The crowd was growing wild with excitement, fuelling our confidence. At the same time, our opponents switched back to attention and started playing like what they did in the first half, making it harder for us to score.

One minute left! Our opponent threw in the ball but I managed to steal it! Our team was bursting with happiness! More opponents were heading my way and I had to pass the ball to Bryce. Instead of passing on the ball, he did the most unexpected thing. He tried to score from half court! He missed by miles!

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了一个令人惊叹的运动员——Cliff Young的故事。

4 . A potato farmer, Cliff Young took part in a Sydney to Melbourne ultramarathon (超级马拉松) race in1983. Coached by his mother who was 81 at the time, Cliff Young started the marathon with work shoes and work clothes.

Competing against world-class marathon runners who were backed up by big sports companies and spent hundreds of hours preparing for the race, Cliff Young’s training method was just running after his sheep. He told the organizers he could run after his sheep for a few days and that he could surely compete with other runners.

The ultramarathon generally took 5 days to compete and this potato farmer’s decision seemed suicidal. In fact, some tried to stop him from running the super-difficult race because they thought Cliff Young could die because of the heat and fatigue(疲劳). After all, he was 61 years old!

To cut the story short, Cliff Young managed to finish the race. While the young racers slept, he continued to race throughout the night. The young athletes left him far behind until the very last night where he finally led the marathon. Not only did Cliff Young, a 61-year-old potato farmer, survive the race, but he even managed to win the marathon and actually broke the race record by 9 hours! He even gave away his prize money to the rest of the runners after him.

After the win, he continued to run in many ultramarathon races and even set standards in the world of endurance racing. His running style, named “The Young Shuffle” is a famous running technique used by many runners in the world today.

8 . TOKYO-International Olympic Committee (IOC) spokesperson Mark Adams said the IOC wanted to send a signal of solidarity (团结) through updating the Olympic motto.

"The Olympic Movement's value is not just about individual excellence, but about a team around you. That is something that the IOC is eager to stress: the value of solidarity," Adams told a press conference here on July 20. "Solidarity is just not about having values. It's about putting values into action," he added. The IOC approved (同意) adding "together" into the Olympic motto. The new motto now reads "Faster, Higher, Stronger-Together" after it was approved at Tuesday's 138th IOC Session.

"The idea of the motto is that you are unable to go faster, go higher and be stronger without a team around you." If you really want to do something, you have to work with other people to achieve that. That's the reason behind the updated motto," explained Adams.

The addition of "together" was proposed by Thomas Bach after his re-election as the IOC president during the virtual 137th IOC Session in March, and the recommendation was approved by the IOC Executive Board in April.

With three days to go before the Tokyo Olympic Games begin, Adams attempted to give Japanese public confidence-boosting messages despite some Olympic-related positive COVID-19 cases over the past several days.

"We would like to reassure them again that everything is being done. The latest figure is nearly 30,000 tests at the airport over staff, athletes and stakeholders. Each of those nearly 30,000 people has been tested twice before they arrived. All these people had three tests, nearly 100,000 tests (in total)," he noted "We can give them a level of satisfaction that everything is being done by us to try and assure there will be a safe and secure Games."

Kirsty Coventry, Chair of the IOC Athletes Commission and a five-time Olympian, expressed her appreciation for quality infrastructures (基础设施) and efforts made by local organizers. "The (Olympic) Village is looking great. Athletes have been super excited. We have been hearing some very positive experiences from athletes. They are excited about the competitions starting" she said.

1. Why is "together" added into the Olympic motto?
A.The old Olympic motto needs updating.
B.It's about putting values into action.
C.It puts stress on the value of a team.
D.The new Olympic motto can improve public confidence.
2. What does the underlined word "proposed" in Para. 4 refer to?
A.Explained.B.Created.
C.Announced.D.Suggested.
3. How did Kirsty Coventry like local organizers?
A.They should have made more efforts.
B.They should be praised for their work.
C.They should have been more professional.
D.They should be blamed for the preparation.
4. Which can serve as the best title for the news report?
A.There will be safe and secure Games
B.IOC displays value of solidarity through motto change.
C.Olympic athletes are excited about competitions starting
D.New Olympic motto reads. "Faster, Higher. Stronger-Together"
