1 . Mallory Haske surfs nearly every day in the summer, and it really annoys her to see trash in the water or on the beach. So when her high school English teacher assigned a passion project, Haske came up with a creative idea that connected surfing and trash.
She collected litter on the beach and used it to create a surf board in an effort to raise awareness about ocean pollution. “The feeling of catching a wave is fantastic. It’s such a mental release,” said Haske, standing on the beach waxing(上蜡) her newly finished trash board. “I really hope it floats.”
Her teacher assigned the project months ago and was surprised to see how Haske’s enthusiasm about it grew throughout the school year. “Not every student found her passion, but she did,” said the teacher. “I’m super proud of her.”
Over the winter, Haske, who would graduate soon, collected litter including cigarette butts, bottle caps, fast-food containers and masks along the resort area beach. “It was definitely a unique challenge,”Haske said.
She landed a sponsor and raised money from friends to create the surf board, which cost about $1,000. Haske took custom orders and helped people build their own surf boards. Making one out of trash was a first for her. Nearly the entire board was made from recycled material and litter.
On Tuesday after school, Haske went out and attempted to ride a wave on her new board, but the mostly flat conditions made it difficult. The nose of the surfboard made by herself kept going under the water, but Haske stayed upbeat. “It’s pretty heavy up front, but it’s going to be my best friend,” Haske said after coming out of the water. “It’s made for large waves.”

7 . Sodas such as Coke or Pepsi are responsible for adding to health problems like tooth problems and obesity (肥胖). So health leaders have recommended teens cut back on sugar-sweetened sodas. However, their push may have had an unplanned result. Many of the advertisements aimed at teens show fit athletes having sugar-sweetened sports drinks. They make sports drinks look like a healthy choice for teens compared to sodas. As a result, teens are turning to this kind of drink.
Scientists at Harvard University in Massachusetts focused on teens, who are considered more likely than younger kids to buy their drinks. In 2015, 22,000 high school students were surveyed, and almost 6 in 10 of them reported having at least one sports drink in the past week. That was up slightly from 2010. The Harvard study found that almost one-third of teens drank one to three sports drinks in the previous week. Just over 1 in10 reported having four to six drinks. Teens who played on sports teams were likely to have one or more sports drinks each day. Boys were more likely than girls to have the drinks, scientists found.
The same was true for teens who watched more than two hours of television. Scientists say they are concerned because of ties between TV watching, ads, and obesity. Experts say that many children don’t need a sports drink that is full of carbohydrates (碳水化合物) and sweeteners. This especially applies to children sitting in front of a TV. The better option is water or unsweetened drinks.
“There is no reason to have carbohydrates in sports drinks unless you are in a high-level game, said Nyree Dardarian, the leader of the Center for Integrated Nutrition and Performance. “Someone on a long bike ride or in an all-day race might want to have one. If children are playing for 20 minutes, they just need water.”
There are other choices. Water and oranges would provide all of the recommended amounts of vitamin C for kids. Other ideas include flavoring water by adding fruit to it. Kids can also add a small amount ofjuice.

10 . All over the world people enjoy sports. Sports help to keep people healthy and happy, and to live longer.
Many people like to watch others play games. They buy tickets or turn on their TVs to watch the games. Often they get very excited when “their” player or team wins.
Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or in those with many rivers. What fun it is to jump into a pool or lake, whether in China, Egypt or Italy! And think of people in cold countries. Think how many people love to skate or ski in Norway or Canada.
Some sports or games go back thousands of years, like running or jumping. Chinese wushu, for example, has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. Neither one is a hundred years old yet. People are inventing new sports or games all the time. Waterskiing is one of the newest in the family of sports.
People from different countries may not be able to understand each other. But after a game together they may become good friends. Sports help to train a person’s character. One learns to fight fair, to win without pride and to lose with grace (风度).
