High-school sports is one of the biggest thing that happens in our town of Verden, population six hundred. And sports are important in our family. Both of our sons were high —school athletes. However, I was surprised when Lauren announced she was going out for the girls’ basketball team. But she has Down syndrome (唐氏综合症) .
My wife and I never told Lauren that she was different. We treated her like our other children. We didn’t want her to feel disabled or different.
“I’m gonna play basketball, Daddy.” Lauren ran to meet me when I returned from work. “That’s nice, honey,” I replied and patted her shoulder. I figured she meant outside—on the driveway. My wife Laura later told me “What Lauren’s trying to tell you is that she’s joining the girls’ high-school basketball team.” Just as my wife’s words stopped, I heard Lauren behind me. “I’m gonna be a Lady Tiger,” she shouted, throwing her arms in the air. I discussed Lauren’s announcement with my wife that evening. “Maybe she won’t make the team,” I offered. “Everybody makes the team, Johnny,” she whispered, “It’s Verden. There are only eleven girls, and not all of them want to play.”
However, I couldn’t help worrying about Lauren. Everything that could happen flashed through my mind. Lauren’s reactions were slow. What if she got injured during practice or trying to keep up with the other players? What if the other girls on the team failed to accept her? What if an insensitive audience made fun of her? Or what if Lauren’s feelings got hurt because she spent most of her time on the bench (替补席) ?
Just as my wife had said, Lauren did make the school basketball team. To relieve my anxiety, I decided to see her practice in person. The next afternoon, I parked in front of the school gymnasium. Entering the gym, I could see Lauren standing alone at the other end of the court, shooting free throws. Inside, Coach (教练) Forsythe stood on the other side of the gym. After every shot, Lauren joyfully shouted, “Woo hoo!” She didn’t seem to care if she made the basket or not.

2 . Do you like to keep fit? We’re always told that regular exercise is good for our body and mind. More and more people are taking up activities that improve their fitness. But is there a risk when people get obsessed (痴迷的) and overdo it?
Well, for some people, fitness has become an obsession as they aim for perfection. And fitness trackers and apps can add to this obsession. And sharing data on social media means exercising becomes public and competitive, which could cause problems in someone who is vulnerable (脆弱的).
Experts say this can lead to a medical condition called orthorexia nervosa, or addiction to “healthy eating” and over-exercise. Untreated, it can lead to physical and mental health problems. Research from scientists at University College London in 2017 found that higher posting on social media was associated with increased likelihood of developing orthorexia, especially among followers of the “healthy eating” influencers.
Too much exercise can also harm someone’s physical health as well. Symptoms of over-exercising include injuries such as tendinitis (肌腱炎) and a low immune system. So how much exercise is too much? A research by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found the ideal pace to jog was about eight kilometers per hour – and that it was best to jog no more than three times a week or for 2.5 hours in total, showing that moderate jogging is possibly more beneficial than being inactive or undertaking much-long jogging.
If you’re more of a couch potato than a sportsman, this might sound like good news. But for amateur (业余的) athletes who can’t help but push their bodies to the limit, the advice from Martin Turner, a sports and exercise psychologist, is, “it’s all about letting go, not being obsessed, learning not to control everything, saying, ‘You don’t need to be perfect.’”

3 . There’s always been debate about the best time of day to work out. For the longest time I’ve heard that exercising first thing in the morning is ideal, but others say a nighttime workout benefits them more. Is one time really better than another, and why?
Regardless of when you work out, there are many health benefits from moving regularly, like improving your heart health, getting stronger or even improving your endurance (耐力). Most people decide to exercise when it best fits their schedule, so oftentimes they can’t help the time of the day they choose to be active.
Research has shown, however, that the time of day you choose to exercise can affect your workout in various ways. The best time to work out is whenever you can. We don’t all have schedules that allow for a 90-minute workout. If your only time of day to exercise is before work, then morning is best. If you reserve physical activity for packed evenings, there’s a good chance that you won’t ever get to it. Likewise, if you can only squash (挤进) 20 minutes of exercise into your day right before you get ready for bed, that’s the best time to work out.
I want to add a note on consistency (连贯性), though: The best time to exercise is whenever you can, but the best-best time of day to exercise is the time you can stick with for days, weeks and months.
The fact of the matter is that people who exercise consistently see better weight loss and fitness results in the long-term. Research also suggests that your body can adapt to regular training schedules, so if you work out every morning, you will probably get a lot better at working out in the morning, and the same in regard to nighttime workouts.

5 . “I’m excited for our women to show their hard work and efforts,” said Lisa Bluder. “Women’s sports should own this stage, and we’re happy to be leading the way.” Bluder is head coach of the women’s basketball team at the University of Iowa.
The exhibition game took place on October 15 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. Iowa went on to defeat DePaul, 94 — 72. The event set a new NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) record for women’s basketball attendance — A total of 55,646 fans watched the game at the historic stadium.
Called “Crossover at Kinnick”, the game benefited the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. The hospital received a check in the amount of $250,000 from ticket sales.
During the game, fans took in “The Wave”, which is known among Iowa Hawkeyes as the best tradition in college sports: Coaches, players, and fans turn to the Children’s Hospital behind the stands to wave to patients and families watching the game.
Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark put on a wonderful performance. She had 34 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. She was also recognized as the Collegiate Women’s Athlete of the Year, an award she won last June.
“Events like the ‘Crossover at Kinnick’ are meaningful for several reasons,” Patrick Kenny said. “They create excitement to start a season and show the fans’ interest in women’s sports.” Kenny is communications manager at the Big Ten Network, which broadcasts college games.
In the 2022 — 2023 season, Louisiana State University defeated Iowa in the national finals. The championship game was the most-watched women’s college basketball game ever.

6 . A study from the University of Montreal has found that watching ice hockey (冰球) greatly increases your heart rate. For television-watchers, the increase was an average 75%, while for those watching live it rose by 110%. This is equal, say the researchers, to running for 15 minutes.
Heart rates were highest during overtime and if there were scoring chances.
However, there is other research showing that watching football can stress the heart so much that it causes strokes (中风) and heart attacks. A study of German fans compared heart rates and blood pressure as they watched their country play in the World Cup. Both heart rate and blood pressure were raised when they watched their own team, and stayed higher for hours afterwards.
The Canadian study was conducted by an observation made by 13-year-old Leia Khairy; daughter of Prof Paul Khairy, the lead researcher. She noticed that while her own heart was beating wildly as she played soccer, the parents on the sidelines were jumping up and down energetically. But Paul Khairy states, “Watching an ice hockey game can’t be replaced by physical activity. It raises heart rate but does not carry the same benefits on cardiovascular (心血管的) health as exercise.
The study of German foot ball fans found that a stressful match more than doubled the risk of a heart attack or a stroke. So it may be that you need to be fit before you watch a sporting event, rather than hope it is equal to brief exercise. Studies have only shown a significant effect on men; and there is no correlation between a fan’s emotional connection with a team and the occurrence of a heart attack. The authors of the Canadian paper suggest that anyone watching an exciting game should take seriously ally symptoms (症状) such as chest pain or shortness of breath. .
