1 . If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and health y life, new research may come as a shock. According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all.
Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1, 000 joggers and non-joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a moderate pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die. The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non-joggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries (动脉). Over time, this can cause serious injuries.
Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease the risk of death and improve life expectancy, jogging a few times a week at a moderate pace is a good strategy. Anything more is just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.”
The implications of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as Tai Chi, yoga and brisk walking may be better for us than “iron man” events, triathlons and long-distance running and cycling. According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study, “You don’t actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn’t actually do too much.”

9 . At some point in most people’s fitness journeys, they hit a plateau(停滞期) — it seems difficult to move forward.
Put recovery first
Overtraining makes it difficult for you to make progress because you are continually breaking down muscle (肌肉) without allowing time to recover and rebuild. Although quality sleep contributes much to recovery, it isn’t the only factor.
Mix up your training
One of the most common reasons for hitting a plateau is sticking with the same workout for too long. Your body naturally adapts to repetitive movements, leading to few returns.
When you’ve exercised for some time, it can be easy to lose sight of how far you’ve come. Monitoring your exercise activity with a smartphone app or a fitness journal can help you recognize markers of your progress. Tracking a variety of measurable markers, such as weights lifted and distances you walked, will enable you to focus on the smaller yet significant goals that make progress more visible.
Remember, hitting a fitness plateau doesn’t mean you aren’t doing enough; it’s a natural part of the journey.
A.Track your progress |
B.Make exercise part of your daily business |
C.You can take longer breaks during your workouts |
D.Pushing harder is not the answer when you reach the point |
E.Celebrate your achievements no matter how small they seem |
F.That’s why cross-training is important for overall fitness success |
G.Using the strategies above, you’ll get back on the road to your fitness goals |
High-school sports is one of the biggest thing that happens in our town of Verden, population six hundred. And sports are important in our family. Both of our sons were high —school athletes. However, I was surprised when Lauren announced she was going out for the girls’ basketball team. But she has Down syndrome (唐氏综合症) .
My wife and I never told Lauren that she was different. We treated her like our other children. We didn’t want her to feel disabled or different.
“I’m gonna play basketball, Daddy.” Lauren ran to meet me when I returned from work. “That’s nice, honey,” I replied and patted her shoulder. I figured she meant outside—on the driveway. My wife Laura later told me “What Lauren’s trying to tell you is that she’s joining the girls’ high-school basketball team.” Just as my wife’s words stopped, I heard Lauren behind me. “I’m gonna be a Lady Tiger,” she shouted, throwing her arms in the air. I discussed Lauren’s announcement with my wife that evening. “Maybe she won’t make the team,” I offered. “Everybody makes the team, Johnny,” she whispered, “It’s Verden. There are only eleven girls, and not all of them want to play.”
However, I couldn’t help worrying about Lauren. Everything that could happen flashed through my mind. Lauren’s reactions were slow. What if she got injured during practice or trying to keep up with the other players? What if the other girls on the team failed to accept her? What if an insensitive audience made fun of her? Or what if Lauren’s feelings got hurt because she spent most of her time on the bench (替补席) ?
Just as my wife had said, Lauren did make the school basketball team. To relieve my anxiety, I decided to see her practice in person. The next afternoon, I parked in front of the school gymnasium. Entering the gym, I could see Lauren standing alone at the other end of the court, shooting free throws. Inside, Coach (教练) Forsythe stood on the other side of the gym. After every shot, Lauren joyfully shouted, “Woo hoo!” She didn’t seem to care if she made the basket or not.
