2 . You may think that sailing is a difficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn it. You do not need to be strong. But you need to be quick. And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind.
First, you must ask yourself, “Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side?” You must think about this all the time on the boat. The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail.
Let’s start with the wind blowing from behind. This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction. Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat. It should be at a 90° angle to the boat. Then it will catch the wind best.
If the wind is blowing from the side, it is blowing across the boat. In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat. It should be at a 45°angle to the boat. It needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn’t flap (摆动). It shouldn’t look like a flag on a flagpole. If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down.
Sailing against the wind is not possible. If you try, the sail will flap and the boat will stop. You may want to go in that direction. It is possible, but you can’t go in a straight line. You must go first in one direction and then in another. This is called tacking (抢风行驶). When you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat.
1. What should you consider first while sailing?A.Sailors’ strength. | B.Wave levels. | C.Wind directions. | D.Size of sails. |
A.The boat | B.The wind. | C.The sail. | D.The angle. |
A.Move in a straight line. | B.Allow the sail to flap. |
C.Lower the sail. | D.Tack the boat. |
3 . When Miss Lyons finished typing the rules, it was almost class time, and I was anxious to get down to the gym. I took the rules and made my way down the stairs. Just inside the door there was a bulletin board for notices. With thumb tacks (图钉) I fastened the rules to this board and then walked across the gym. I was sure in my own mind that the game was good, but it needed a real test. I felt that its success or failure depended largely on the way that the class received it.
The first member of the class to arrive was Frank Mahan. He was a southerner from North Carolina, had played tackle (阻截队员) on the football team, and was the ringleader of the group. He saw me standing with a ball in my hand, and perhaps guessed that another experiment was to be tried. He looked up at the basket on one end of the gallery, and then his eyes turned to me. He stared at me for an instant, and then looked towards the other end of the gym. Perhaps he was nervous, because his cry sounded like a death knell (丧钟) as he said, “Huh! Another new game!”
When the class arrived, I called the roll and told them that I had another game, which I felt sure would be good. I promised them that if this was a failure, I would not try any more experiments. I then read the rules from the bulletin board and proceeded to organize the game. There were eighteen men in the class; I selected two captains and had them choose sides. When the teams were chosen, I placed the men on the floor. There were three forwards, three centers, and three backs on each team. I chose two of the center men to jump, then threw the ball between them. It was the start of the first basketball game and the finish of the trouble with that class.
1. What was the author’s goal in introducing a new game to the class?A.To popularize a new sport. | B.To test the success of the game. |
C.To occupy the class during gym time. | D.To impress the students with his skills. |
A.Miss Lyons. | B.Frank Mahan. |
C.A center man. | D.The author himself. |
A.Doubtful. | B.Excited. |

Dave had loved basketball for as long as he could remember and he had never had a day without playing it. At primary school and junior high school he joined basketball clubs, attended training programs and watched basketball games, from which he learned the moves of the star players, wishing to play in a professional team like them and shine on the court.
Now as a senior high school student, however, his dream of becoming a professional player was dimming (变暗) because he was only of average height. He had to give up the hope of joining the school team. The guys on the school team were all tall boys who played matches and won honors for the school. They were like heroes. Dave watched them play and cheered them but he knew he would never be one of them.
Dave felt it a pity not to be tall enough, but this didn’t stop him from pouring his passion into basketball. He just played for the love of the sport. He played in the school gym with other boys or by himself every day, even during holidays and weekends, when it was open for two hours in the morning. He enjoyed every minute on the court making every effort to play better.
It was one Saturday morning. Dave was playing in the gym by himself, as all the other boys were busy with other weekend affairs. Then he noticed a tall boy approaching. It was Lankas. Everybody knows him as captain of the school basketball team. “Hi, Lankas,” Dave greeted him. “My name is Dave.” “Hi, Dave,” Lankas replied as he got closer. “Nice to see you here. Do you need an opponent to play against?” Dave was shocked, frozen right there, unable to believe his ears but somehow, he answered, “Why not?”

7 . People refer to never forgetting how to ride a bike or throw a baseball as examples of “muscle memory”, the result of a motor learning.
Previous research has shown that the changes actually persist in the muscles themselves. In one study of mice, the results suggest that after nuclei in muscle cells multiply in response to an overload of training, those extra nuclei aren’t lost during subsequent periods of inactivity. They are retained (保留), essentially waiting to be reactivated. If you fell off the fitness wagon (马车) during the pandemic, don’t be frustrated. Once you have got additional nuclei, you are banking the capacity.
Ultimately, muscle memory is a payoff for all the past work you put into learning a sport.
A.The best way to tap into it is to “get back on the horse”. |
B.Physiologists, on the other hand, define it in a different way. |
C.This convinces the researchers that muscle memory may not be long lasting. |
D.That is to say, we can do the sports automatically without conscious thought. |
E.It is generally safe to increase these elements by 5 percent every week or two. |
F.It is evident that the more you exercise, the more muscle memory savings you will have. |
G.All this news about muscle memory is encouraging for those who fell off the fitness scheme. |

9 . You signed up for soccer, and played every game of the season. Sure, you’re not the best player on the team, but most days you gave it your all. Do you deserve a trophy (奖杯)?
If the decision is up to Carol Dweck, the answer would likely be no. She’s a psychology professor at Stanford University, California. She says a player doesn’t have to be the best to get a trophy. But those who receive an award should have to work for it. She suggests trophies go to the most improved player, or the one who contributed most to the team spirit, as well as to those who play the best.
Others say that there’s no harm in giving awards to all kids who play a sport, regardless of how they played or whether or not they improved.
“I think we should encourage kids’ participation in sports,” says Kenneth Barish, a psychology professor at Weill Cornell Medical College, in New York City. “A trophy is one way to encourage kids’ efforts.”
Barish argues that when we single out only the best or even the most improved players with a trophy, we are teaching kids the wrong lesson. We are sending the message that winning is everything. “Winning is only part of the equation (等式).” Barish told TFK. “Playing sports also teaches kids about teamwork and the importance of exercise.”
There will be plenty of opportunities for kids to learn about competition as they get older, says Barish. They’ll soon realize that only one soccer team wins the World Cup and only one football team wins the Super Bowl. For now, he thinks there’s nothing wrong with letting all kids who play a sport feel like winners. That means trophies for everyone.
From my point of veiw, the trophy has to stand for something. If we give a trophy to everyone, then the award has no value. Trophies should be given for particular reasons, such as improving in a sport, which teaches kids that adults value hard work and trying out best.
1. According to Carol Dweck, which player should receive a trophy?A.Peter, who is ready to help his partners to score goals. |
B.David, a soccer player who is both clever and funny. |
C.Tony, the most attractive player of the soccer team |
D.Jim, a soccer player who tries bis best to win the game. |
A.There is no sense in giving a trophy to everyone. |
B.Kids fond of playing sports should be rewarded. |
C.Kids should be given trophies for taking part in a sport |
D.There is no need to give kids courage to play a sport. |
A.remember | B.stress | C.value | D.choose |
A.Which one do you agree with? | B.Who deserves a trophy? |
C.What is a trophy? | D.How can kids win a trophy? |
10 . The Qatar 2022 World Cup on Nov. 20, 2022 is the first winter edition in the history of World Cup and the first World Cup played in the Arab world. Qatar was the country of barely three million people, one of the world’s biggest producers of natural gas, having spent tens of billions of dollars on building stadiums and infrastructure. It has built eight stadiums for the World Cup as well as a new airport, series of roads and about 100 new hotels. New stadiums cost more than $6.5bn and a driverless metro rail system with a price tag of $36 bn serves five of the eight venues.
From motion tracking balls to AI assisted offside detector, Qatar’s first Wold Cup is filled with new tech. Earlier this year Adidas revealed ‘Al Rihla’, the official match ball of the 2022 World Cup. Al Rihla translates as ‘the journey’ in Arabic and it is designed to support the highest game speeds as it travels faster in flight than any FIFA World Cup ball created before it in the tournament’s 92-year history. The new ball features the latest Adidas Suspension System at its core, containing a motion sensor that tracks every touch of the game at a rate of 500 times per second. The motion sensor inside the ball will enable the collection of incredibly accurate ball movement data, which will then be transmitted to Video Match Officials within seconds throughout the tournament.
In addition, this year FIFA has announced a new semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) which is used at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. The new technology uses 12 dedicated tracking cameras mounted underneath the roof of the stadiums to track the ball, as well as up to 29 data points on each individual player, which are tracked 50 times per second, calculating their exact position on the pitch (场地). The 29 collected data points include all limbs and extremities (手足) that are relevant for making offside calls. This data is used in conjunction with artificial intelligence, to provide an automated offside alert to the video match officials inside the video operation room whenever the ball is received by an attacker who was in an offside position.
1. What can we learn about the Qatar 2022 World Cup?A.It is the first AI World Cup in history. |
