1 . The famous magazine, Runner’s World, has chosen some of the best, most difficult and enjoyable UK races.
Top of the Wolds 10K Challenge
This 10-km countryside track in Yorkshire is all fun until you take the left turn at Nunburnholme. At this point, you enter a serious uphill part, but thankfully the uphill part only lasts for around 1.5km. You’ll have about a kilometre to enjoy the views before the way takes you downhill again, and back to where you started in Warter —a cute little village.
Scurry2Bridges Run
This 161-km relay race is divided into 16 parts, so you each run 4 separate parts. Over the course of this day-long adventure, you’ll each run about marathon distance while the workers will drive around for pick-ups and drop-off s at relay exchange points between the start in Dundee and the finish in Edinburgh.
Scafell Sky Race
Here’s a trail run(越野跑) that is not suitable for beginners. With a total of 3,500 m of ascent(上坡路), this is unquestionably one of the hardest events around. Good thing is that the views are beautiful, and that there’s hot food and a bottle of apple juice waiting for you in the end.

3 . Taking exercise can be boring. The good news is that there are some tips which we can apply to our everyday fitness routines
•Have an objective.
When we’re playing a game, there’s always an objective. It helps us focus on the task at hand and motivates us to keep playing until we win the game. Exercise should be no different. Create a clear fitness goal.
•Add an element of whimsy (奇思妙想)
Some people love video games because there’s a lot of unexpectedness and surprise.
•
In a study, a team of researchers challenged 602 overweight workers from a single company to take part in a step-tracking challenge. The group asked to compete against other workers ended up walking more steps than any other groups in the study. If we’re seeking a similar motivation, look into fitness programs that encourage friendly competition.
•Team up with others.
A.Compete against others. |
B.Aim to walk 10,000 steps a day, for example. |
C.Play against a friend to get competitive. |
D.No one wanted to let their team members down. |
E.And there are plenty of digital tools that can help with this. |
F.We can copy these features into our own fitness game designs. |
G.Getting a group to work together is also an effective way. |
4 . In an ideal world, we would be able to devote as much time to sports as we feel we need. But in reality, with growing demands in both work and family, we can only jump at the chance for our physical exercise when we can. Making the most of that time to practice Yin Yang yoga, which mixes the dynamic and slow-paced elements of yoga, helps keep you active and relaxed.
Yin and Yang are the Taoist concepts representing a balance of opposite forces which are also interconnected. Yin is inactive, cooling, and negative, associated with the female force. Yang is active, warming, and positive, associated with action and movement. They are complementary to one another, as one cannot exist without the other.
Yin Yang yoga is a combination of high-energy movement which builds energy, increases strength and promotes stamina (耐力), followed by the more restful practice of Yin to give us a deeper stretch (拉伸) and calm the nervous system.
If you have a busy and active life you may feel more in Yang, so taking some cooler, slower Yin yoga practice into your routine may help you feel calmer and more balanced.
If you are practicing for an hour, divide the time in half, Warm up with sun salutations (拜日式瑜伽), continue into a dynamic flow and then move on to some standing postures. After half an hour your heart will be pumping, muscles tighten up and you are hopefully feeling energetic, but ready for a rest. Then pick five Yin postures to hold for 3-5 minutes, or even longer if you are enjoying them!
As ever with yoga, if you are a beginner or have health issues, always attend a class with a trained instructor first to guide you safely through the yoga practice and avoid injury.
1. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?A.Most of our sports time should be spent on Yin Yang yoga. |
B.We’d better devote as much time to physical exercise as we can. |
C.Busy schedule makes it impossible for us to do any form of sports. |
D.Yin Yang yoga can be a choice of physical exercise when time is tight. |
A.Independent from one another. |
B.Competitive against one another. |
C.Similar to each other but unable to work together as a whole. |
D.Different from each other but together making a good combination. |
A.Relaxing muscles. | B.Building stamina. |
C.Strengthening the body. | D.Quickening the heartbeat. |
A.Hold each Yin posture for longer than 5 minutes. |
B.Do not practice yoga when you are not in good health. |
C.Start your yoga practice under the guidance of a trainer. |
D.Spare half an hour for five Yin postures in every yoga practice. |
5 . Artificial intelligence (AI) plays an important role in the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 and Asian Para Games. These terms might sound familiar, but how smart are they when applied to the 56 Asian Games venues (场地)?
Their smartness can be found in running the venues with less human labor forces. At the Huanglong Sports Center, a system called Smart Stadium Brain is built. A 25 square meter high definition screen lays in the venue’s information center, which guarantees a friendly environment for the athletes and audiences. A small screen on each seat is designed to be at the audience’s service. By finger touching, the audience can control it conveniently to watch and keep contact with the event. What’s more, supported by the 5G technology.
AI also means further protection on environment. At the Fuyang sports Center, although it has been raining for days, the roof of the venue still remains dry. And the secret lies in its attractive sky garden. The garden, is not only eye-catching but also useful. It allows the greening rate of the entire stadium to reach as high as 45%, being energy-saving. Under the cobblestones (鹅卵石), a recovery system is filtering (过滤) and collecting rainwater for the venue’s water system, and irrigation water.
1. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “guarantee” in Para2?A.Adapt to. | B.Take advantage of. | C.Get used to. | D.Make sure of. |

6 . I recently spent half a weekend sitting on the sofa watching the Davis Cup. I thought about going for a run, but I did not want to miss the rest of the match. Soon it was starting to get dark, so I did not bother (费神). Whenever I watch tennis, I think how nice it would be to play it regularly. But I have been thinking that for almost 20 years without actually setting foot on a court. The evidence would suggest that I’m not the only one.
When a country or city competes to host an international sporting event, it often promises that more people will take up sports as a result. London was no exception. Tessa Jowell, who helped to bid for (申办) the 2012 Olympics for London, said that by 2012 two million more people would be physically active. And 60 percent of young people would be doing at least five hours of sports per week.
In the end, just over one-third of people in Britain take part in sports once a week. A report on Olympic and Paralympic influences has said that a big change in participation levels simply has not happened.
Why isn’t there a big increase in people taking part in sports after most sporting events? Perhaps it is a mistake to assume a definite link between watching sports and playing it. While the games are on, they actually encourage people to do just the opposite — to spend whole sunny days not out playing sports, but inside sitting on the sofa with the curtains shut to stop the sun shining on the TV screen. We don’t expect half the audience of a hit musical to apply to drama school the next day, yet we seem to expect it of sporting events.
The high-level performances on show only remind people that they could never match the excellent athletes in their sporting achievements even if they trained full time.
Maybe participation in sports is not the right thing to expect after a major sporting event. The Olympics can do many things, but maybe this cannot necessarily be one of them.
1. How does the author introduce the topic?A.By sharing experiences. | B.By asking questions. |
C.By listing figures. | D.By analyzing causes. |
A.Watching sports is closely linked with playing it. |
B.Watching games discourages people from going out. |
C.Watching games encourages people to take part in sports. |
D.Half the audience of a hit musical will take part in drama soon. |
A.Do people like participating in sporting events? |
B.Do people prefer watching big sporting events? |
C.Do the Olympics encourage people to match athletes? |
D.Do big sporting events make us do more sport? |
A.Positive. | B.Negative. |
C.Uncertain. | D.Objective. |
7 . If you want to improve your fitness, walking is a great choice.
Walk for at least 30 minutes 3 to 5 days a week.
If you only have a short period of time to walk, add force to work on your stamina. You can simply put a few books or solid objects in a backpack and carry that. Keep track of the amount of weight you’re carrying so you can increase it gradually.
Find ways to include walking in your regular routine.
Figure out how you can introduce more walking into your daily routine. For example, you might try using the stairs instead of the elevator.
Download a step-tracking or general fitness app.
A fitness app allows you to set goals for yourself to stay active and increase your walking stamina over time.
A.Carry weight while walking. |
B.Some trackers also allow you to compete with others. |
C.Go on a longer walk at least one day a week. |
D.It’s free, simple, and adaptable to your schedule. |

G.Going for regular walks improves your cardiovascular (心血管的) fitness gradually. |
8 . Simon James is a super-trail runner (越野跑步者) who encourages people to reconnect with nature in the name of exercise. He has completed Super Trail in the Alps, the Andes and the Himalayas. A late-night bet with a client (客户) got him tied to running.
“In 2006, a business client challenged me one evening in a bar to a 36-hour walk across 54 miles of the West Highland Way, and I foolishly said ‘yes’,” James said. “He then rang me the next day to tell me we would be running it.”
At the time, James was 20 kilograms overweight and the longest he had run before that was just under 8 miles, but he managed to finish that run and has never looked back.
According to a report, two-thirds of adults in the U.K. are overweight, one-fifth suffering from depression (抑郁). The huge influence caused by modern lifestyle has worsened these issues. We are aware of the importance of exercise in everyday life, and no amount of virtual meetings can make up for direct social contact. James said, “Only one thing can fix these problems — trail running.”
What is unique about trail running, he explained, is that “it reconnects us to our beautiful nature and connects our physical, mental and spiritual aspects, as well as providing us with an experience which can connect us to other people”.
Inspired, he quit his city life of working 16-hour-plus-days as a banker, and spent more time in trails and mountains.
James is now in charge of the trail running company Run the Wild. He said every run has been a gift following a physical operation in 2015, even though his doctor told that he could hardly run again. He said, “The outdoors is such a great place for us all to experience.”
1. How did Simon James take part in trail running?A.He was inspired by a friend. | B.He tried to deal with his health issue. |

A.A Unique Experience | B.Running Wonder |
C.A Trail to Nature | D.Depression Disorders |
9 . Instead of working overtime in hopes of getting a pay rise, maybe you should go to the gym, as it could make you just as happy as that extra money.
An interesting new study shows people who are physically active have a greater sense of well-being (幸福) than those who are inactive, and that active people feel as good as inactive people who earn $25,000 more per year.
Researchers from Oxford and Yale Universities used data collected from 1.2 million Americans. They were asked, “How many times have you felt mentally unwell in the past 30 days, for example because of stress, depression, or emotional problems?” They were also asked about their exercise habits, choosing from 75 different physical activities, including mowing the lawn, doing housework, running, weightlifting, and cycling.
The researchers found that people who exercised often felt had for an average of 35 days per year while inactive people felt bad for an additional 18 days. All exercise types had a good influence. Social physical activities, for example team sports, were considered to have a better influence although cycling ranked highly.
However, it is possible to get too much exercise. According to a study, the mental health of those who exercised for more than three hours a day suffered more than that of those who weren’t physically active. The proper amount seems to be three to five times per week, lasting 30 to 60 minutes each.
1. What’s mainly talked about in the first two paragraphs?A.Doing exercise brings happiness. | B.Working overtime is bad for our health. |

10 . Some people have argued that there are two ways to really think about health and exercise — an Eastern way and a Western way. When people think about Eastern ways, they think about how exercise and health are viewed in countries like China. When people think about Western ways, they often think about how health and exercise are viewed in countries like the US.
Eastern exercise programs come in many varieties. There are a number of different kinds of martial arts. Martial arts were originally made to help people protect themselves or attack someone. The movements in these kinds of exercise programs are usually very strong and sharp. There are slower and gentler forms of exercise, too. Such gentler martial arts take the person through a series of slow movements that are designed to help the whole body. Another kind of exercise involving slow movements is yoga. All of these kinds of exercise programs involve the body and the mind. The right kind of thinking and positive attitude are encouraged. In many Asian countries, people gather in parks to exercise together in the open air.
Western exercise programs come in a wide variety as well. People often take up walking or running. They may combine these activities with swimming or weight lifting. Such kinds of exercise are supposed to make your heart beat fast and make your body stronger. People often do these activities in a health club. Going to these health clubs can be very costly and some of the exercise programs require the use of special equipment to get into shape. Some people also enjoy joining health club s to take group exercise classes. But those who run tend to run alone in parks or on quiet streets.
Western exercise is usually focused on losing weight, getting healthy, or feeling good about yourself. It is not necessarily connected to certain ways of thinking, although trainers and doctors encourage people to have a positive attitude about exercising.
Maybe choosing an exercise approach is not about which one is better, but rather about choosing activities from both that work for you. In some places, it is not easy to go to the park to exercise with others. Some people cannot afford special equipment. The most important thing is to find an activity that you enjoy and exercise your way to better health.
