1 . As I was growing up, my life revolved (围绕)around soccer. I played on the national youth soccer teams, traveled to Europe, and at age fifteen, spent time training with a professional team in England. I always knew I was going to be a professional soccer player.
I had a full soccer scholarship to a top Midwest university, but when I got to college, things began to change. I started to see everything I had missed along the way. My high school years had been filled with practices and games and I didn't get to do a lot of the other things my friends were doing. I got to college and wanted to be “normal”. I was feeling burned out, so I just walked away from soccer and my scholarship. But I felt bad because soccer was the only thing in my life in which I ever had a deep interest. After graduation I did a few jobs. I worked in the financial industry, and then for several tech companies. I was still distressed.
Looking back, I can see that these jobs weren't based on the values that were important to me : honesty, stability (稳定),and family. Then an old soccer coach of mine called and presented an offer — teaching soccer and other sports to little kids. I thought, Could this be it, my calling(职业)?" I've been teaching now for a couple of years and really love it. I'm working with kids, which I enjoy, and I'm playing soccer again only with shorter players.

2 . Football, to me, is more than just a game. I have probably learned more valuable lessons from it than from school.
When I joined the team freshman year, I didn’t realize what I was getting into. Even though I had been playing since fourth grade and knew it was hard work, nothing would prepare me for the effort I would put into football that year. We worked all summer in the weight room and ran on the track to get in physical and mental shape before the season.
See, football is more of a mental sport than anything else, so running on the track wasn’t only about getting in shape. We would push our minds by running as hard as we could even if we were going to pass out. At the beginning, I was immature and only thought of myself, sometimes even gave up when I was tired or hurt. Then after the third game I had a season-ending injury. Imagine working all summer and then only being able to play three games! I needed surgery on my arm and at least five months to recover.
Needless to say, I missed the rest of the season, but this actually helped me realize that since you never know when your last play will be, you should try your hardest in football and life.
After freshman year I decided that I would always give my best effort. Playing varsity football has taught me so much more than just what my assignments are on a particular play or how to block. I have learned to think about others first and realized how important working hard is. Being with all my friends, even sweating and bleeding with them, really made us bond as a group of hard-working young men who I know will succeed in life.

3 . Smart phones have been blamed for everything from taking drivers' attention from driving to keeping people on the sofa scrolling(滚屏)videos. But the smart phone that seems to be everywhere could just easily increase physical activity if it pushes its owner's buttons in the right way.
New research shows that making social connections(人际关系)through activity-tracking apps gets people to move more. And another study on the "Pokemon Go" phenomenon shows that the smart phone games got players to take thousands more steps than usual. Together, the studies show the potential(潜在性)of smart phones to push a range of people to be more active.
People who linked with friends on the activity-tracking app increase their steps by 400 a day on average, compared with people who made no social connections, according to Tim Althoff and two other computer scientists at Stanford University. Such opinions show the possibilities of smart phones and games to help with one of the most stubborn public health problems-that even people who want to be active have trouble staying active.
An NBA videogame, for example, will give players extra powers in the game if they reach a step goal in real life. The app "Zomies, Run! " uses audio stories to push people to run more.
Still, there is room for growth: Only about 4% of all health apps use "gamification", such as point-scoring or competition, according to a study published in October in BMJ Open." Gamification is actually quite closely linked with behavior change techniques, " says Dr. Elizabeth Ann Edwards, the study's lead author.

6 . Physical fitness is today s hot topic. And wherever you turn, you hear something new. But is it all true?
The more you sweat the more fat you burn
This myth has encouraged people to work out in extreme heat or wear layers of clothes or rubber or plastic weight-loss suits in the hope of sweating fat off. Unfortunately, it’s water that you’re losing, not fat. When you first begin to exercise, you burn carbohydrates or sugars. To burn the fat, plan on working out at least 40 minutes.
No pains, no gains
Many people tend to overdo their exercise programs looking for quick results. Doing so, however, may result in your injury or sore (疼痛的) muscles. Your best bet is to start any exercise program slowly and gradually increase the workout. This gives people a good beginning without the pain or injury.
Exercise increases appetite
This is true for hard or intense (剧烈的) exercise that lasts for 60 minutes or longer. Gentle exercise that is less than 60 minutes, however, will probably reduce your appetite for one to two hours. Exercise always lowers blood sugar.
You can get fit in 10 minutes a week
This and similar claims are common, but untrue. There are no shortcuts to getting fit. Becoming fit takes work and the general rule is 20 minutes of aerobic activity three times a week. Consistency is the key. If you stop working out, your muscles will turn to fat. If you decrease your activity and continue to eat the same or more you may gain back the fat that you worked so hard to lose. It’s not, however because your muscles turned to fat. Muscles may atrophy(萎缩) but they won’t turn to fat. Muscle is muscle and fat is fat.
1. According to the writer, which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Overdoing exercise results in quick effect. |

C.encourage people to get into the habit of exercising regularly |
D.give people advice on how to lose weight |
A.40 minutes a day | B.1 hour a day | C.1 hour a week | D.10 minutes a week |
7 . As is often the case, it is human nature to lead a sedentary(久坐的)lifestyle and most of us are so involved in our busy schedules that we don't even notice our bad habits. Many worry about the right time or "right age" to start working out.
Master your mind. Most people argue that they are too tired or old to start exercising. Doing so is much easier than trying to change the busy lifestyle. Change your mindset and be more confident in improving your health.
Easy does it. Once you have chosen a fitness program, start slowly and increase it in stages. Begin with just a few minutes of gentle exercises and stretches.
Always warm up. Always remember to warm up your muscles before exercising. Gentle warm-ups will reduce your risk of injury, aches and pains, and increase blood circulation and flexibility.
Cool down. When you finish your routine, you need to cool your muscles and let your heart rate slow gradually.
A.Don't overload your body. |
B.Never ignore your potentials. |
C.Tell your body to be more active and say, "I can do it." |

9 . It seems that the Englishmen just cannot live without sports of some kind. A famous French humorist once said that this is because the English insist on behaving like children all their lives. Wherever you go in this country, you will see both children and grown-ups knocking a ball about with a stick or something, as if in Britain men shall always remain boys and women girls! Still, it can never be bad to get exercise, can it?
Taking all amateur(业余)and professional sports in Britain into consideration, there can be no doubt that football is at the top of the list. It is called soccer in the United States. The game originated(起源于)in Britain and was played in the Middle Ages or even earlier, though as an organized game, or “association football”, it dates only from the beginning of the 19th century.
The next is rugby, which is called “football” in the United States. It is a kind of football played by two teams of fifteen players than eleven. In rugby, an oval-shaped ball is used which can be handled as well as kicked. It is a pretty rough game.
In summer, cricket is the most popular sport. In fact, it has sometimes been called the English national game. Most foreigners find the game rather slow or even boring, but it enjoys great popularity among the British.
Tennis rates high on the list, too. It was introduced into England from France in the 15th century, but it was from England that it spread to practically every country in the world.
Table tennis, or “ping-pong”, surely is not played on a great scale as it is in China or Japan. Basketball and volleyball were introduced into Britain during the late 19th century from America and are gaining popularity. Horse-back riding, swimming, rowing and golf all attract a lot of people.

10 . For some people, walking or running outdoors is a great way to exercise. What may not be so great is seeing rubbish all over the ground. Well, some people are doing something about it.
A Swedish man named Erik Ahlström, started the movement in 2016. He moved to Stockholm from a small community (社区) in northern Sweden. Each day he would ride his bike to work. He became worried about the amount of rubbish and litter he saw each day on his way to work. So, he took matters into his own hands. He began picking up the rubbish.
Today, plogging is an official activity, which is becoming more and more popular. People of all ages are welcome to plog. Exercise while helping your community.
Along with cleaning up the environment, there may be another reason to choose plogging instead of just jogging. You may get a better workout. One fitness app, Lifesum, records one hour of plogging as burning 288 calories.
As can be seen, cities around the world now hold plogging events. The goal is to spread the idea that littering is not acceptable. People would think twice before dropping a garbage on the ground.
