1 . Sport is very popular in England. In other words, lots of English people like the idea of sport. A lot watch sport on TV. But the number who take part in sport is quite small.
On the whole, English people prefer to be fat rather than thin.
The most popular sport in England is football. Football is played on Saturday afternoon in most towns and the supporters of a certain team will travel from one end of the country to the other to see their team play. There are four divisions(级别) of the football league. Not Surprisingly, the best teams are in the first division. But the best supporters are often in the fourth division. You have to be a good supporter to watch the fourth division football!
Many other sports are also played in England, such as golf, in which you try to knock a ball into a hole; basketball, in which you try to get a ball through a net; tennis, in which you try to hit a ball so that your opponent(对手) can not hit it. As you see, if the ball had not been invented, there would have been no sport.
Actually, that is not quite true. Athletics(田径)isn’t played with a ball, nor horse racing. Perhaps that is why they are not as popular as football!

5 . As the most popular sport in the world, soccer is played by people of all ages. The sport is enjoyed by 265million players, including both professional and amateur athletes. While soccer players are known for their skilled footwork, they also use their head. This technique is called heading.
If you’ve never played soccer, heading may look pretty dangerous to the poor brain.
Dr. Frank Webbe, a former soccer referee and coach, says there is good reason to believe that with proper technique, a player’s risk of brain injury is low. The problem is that in a fast-paced game of soccer obstacles sometimes prevent a player from heading with good technique.
Webbe and his colleagues tested soccer players in neurocognitive performance such as attention, concentration, and speed of thinking. They compared long-time soccer players to new players, as well as medium-to-frequent headers to less than medium headers. In addition, they tested people who had played soccer recently as well as people who hadn’t played in some time.
The results convince Webbe that heading does indeed pose a threat to brain function.
However, it’s also possible to slowly develop symptoms after repeated smaller injuries.

B.It is when a player deliberately hits the ball with his head. |

7 . The triathlon is a demanding sport. Many say that it is a real test of an athlete’s body and mind. It is difficult because it is three sports in one. It includes swimming for 13. 86 kilometers, bicycling for 180 kilometers, and running for 42. 2 kilometers. The top triathletes finish all three events in about 8 hours.
This sport is a real challenge. First, it takes time to train for competitions. Some people spend up to 8 months training for the race. Second, it takes money to compete. The equipment is not cheap. Bicycles for this event can cost up to$10, 000. Top-quality swimming gear (用具) and running shoes are expensive. Third, athletes must have strong minds. It takes willpower (意志力) to push themselves to keep training to reach their goal.
The triathlon is a recent sport. Triathlons began in California in the early 1970s. In 1978, competitors held the first professional triathlon race in Hawaii. In 1982, this race became famous because of the televised performance of Julie Moss. It was her first competition. Exhausted, she was running toward the finish line. Suddenly, 3 meters before the line, she fell down. She tried to get up, but she kept falling. She finally crawled (爬) across the finish line. She lost that year, but she tried again. Finally, in 1985, she won. This was the start of the triathlon's popularity.
Today, triathlons are much more popular among ordinary athletes. People of all ages can compete, as long as they are in good physical condition. In fact, it has become a great family sport. Triathletes are special people who have time in their lives for careers (事业) and families. Most are highly educated and earn top salaries (薪水) in their jobs. Many triathletes are happily married. In fact, two-thirds of triathletes say that their training has a positive influence on their marriages. Today, the triathlon is an Olympic sport and a respected event worldwide.

8 . Running is the best way to get fit.
There’s no best method to get fit. You have to enjoy your exercise or you will find reasons to quit. Nobody can get fit or lose weight or build a muscle in an instant. Fitness requires time and patience, and you get rewards as you go along. If you are looking only at running or at instant success, you are looking for trouble!
If you don’t exercise an hour a day, six days a week, you do nothing.
Don’t believe in this all-or-nothing way. Even if you exercise as little as three times a week for half an hour you will benefit from it. However, if you want to get fit for sport, you may have to work out five to six days a week.
Warming up before working out isn’t necessary if you’re careful.
Warming up is a must before you exercise. Warming up and stretching not only help you avoid injuries but also prepare your heart and body to accept the shock of an increased workload.
No pain, no gain.
Pain means that the body is showing that there is something wrong. If you feel painful when exercising, either slow down or stop the exercise. To gain from exercise, you may have to make do with a bit of discomfort, but pain is different. If you continue exercising with pain you may damage a muscle or tendon forever.
Taping (用绷带包扎) an injury prevents further damage.
If you are injured and you tape it for support, chances are that you will aggravate the injury further. What’s more, you may injure other joints because of the limited flexibility (灵活性) that the taped knee or ankle allows.
