Raj learns a lesson
Raj is a middle-aged man. Although he was born in a poor family, he was raised well by his father and mother. His father owned a welding (焊接) shop, and used to work for more than 12 hours a day, so that his family could lead a comfortable life.
However, Raj’s father could not earn sufficient money to provide a decent life to his family. Raj was an average student in school, and used to score around 70 percent marks. Raj’s dream was to become a doctor. Since his marks weren’t very high, he could not get the desired course that he wanted to study. Instead, he joined a bachelor’s degree course, completed the course successfully, and got a job in a company.
In order not to depend on Raj, his father continued to work in his shop. After getting a permanent job, Raj’s parents wanted him to marry. He got married to a girl from his native town, and meanwhile was promoted in his job. After a few years, his wife gave birth to beautiful twin boys.
Later, Raj began to earn a handsome salary, and started to live luxuriously. He bought a new house and a new car. Some of the luxuries were really unnecessary. Almost 6 to 7 years later, Raj was neither able to manage all the household expenses, nor pay for the children’s education and other basic necessities.
It so happened that Raj’s father fell sick, and as a result, could not continue his work. He requested Raj to give some money for his treatment and other household expenses. Raj, who was already suffering from financial crisis, not only shouted at his parents but also complained to his parents, “You never give me what I needed and wanted and it took me more than 10 years to get settled. Now, while I am again struggling for money, you are not doing anything to help me, but instead are a burden to me! So, please don’t come to me again.”
His parents were left shocked.

3 . How to Read the Newspaper Quickly and Efficiently
You want to stay informed about the world but you have such a busy life.
Scan the headlines
Basically, a newspaper article presents the most crucial information early on and gradually reveals less and less significant details. In other words, you can read the first one to five paragraphs or so and really already know the meat of the story.
Read the photo captions
If you’re really in a hurry but you want a little bit more information than what the headline provides, skip the story and go straight to the photo caption(说明). Photo captions often serve as an intermediate between the headline and the actual story.
Look at the graphics
Search for bar graphs(图表), pie charts, and other visuals that show you what you need to know by the numbers in a flash. Often you don’t even have to hunt; the graphics are noticeably displayed and perhaps even in color. Graphics alone rarely, if ever, provide much deep insight into a story.
A.Read the first three paragraphs. |
B.Grasp the most crucial information first. |
C.They give you some detail but not everything. |
D.Headlines usually declare what the story’s about upfront. |
E.The most important details are usually included in headlines. |
F.However, they do give you a brief introduction to what makes a certain story so attractive. |
G.Actually, that doesn’t mean you can’t take a few minutes to learn about what’s happening worldwide. |
4 . It seemed like it had only been a few years ago that Indigo, our black Lab (拉布拉多寻回犬), had first rushed through our door. While time raced by, our children grew up and went off to university. The mirror, which had reflected a young mum when Indigo first arrived, now showed a woman in late middle age. We all turned grey: me, my husband, the dog. In August 2017, I took Indigo for one last walk. She was slow and shaky on her paws. She died that month, a tennis ball by her side. Not long after, I got a call from our dog daycare. One of their customers was dying, and her dog, Chloe, needed a home. Given our recent loss, they asked, might our family be interested in adopting her? I told them I’d owned a succession of dogs since 1964, each one of them a witness to a particular phase of my life. But with the loss of Indigo, all that was over. The days of my dogs, I now understood, were done at last.
Then one morning, as I was passing the dog daycare, I changed my mind. What harm could Chloe do? She spent hours that first day going to every corner, sniffing things out. Finally she sat down by the fireplace and gave me a look as if to say if you wanted, I would stay with you.
Everything I know about love I’ve learned from dogs. But everything I know about loss I’ve learned from them, too. They fill our hearts. And then, in what seems like no time at all, they’re gone.

NEVER STOP WALKING
When Justin was 7, he suffered from a disease that led to problems with the development of his back. Over the years, the little boy had gone through a total of five corrective surgeries. Justin could no longer walk and was limited to a wheelchair. But this did not stop him from living a normal life thanks to his mother’ S love and others’ help.
After entering high school, Justin got interested in playing the trumpet (小号) and joined the school’s band. He served as one of the band’s trumpeters and developed a strong friendship with his partner Tom. As Thanksgiving Day approached, the band intended to perform in the Thanksgiving Day Parade and every member had the chance to join in, including Justin. However, there was one obvious problem. Justin could not control his wheelchair and play the trumpet at the same time. The band director put forward an idea of one student pushing Justin during his marches. Tom immediately volunteered even though it meant he had to give up the opportunity to play his own instrument during the parade.“I do it just to make sure Justin knows that he always has a place in the band, and he always will,“ Tom said to their director secretly. From then on, the two practiced together, one playing the instrument and the other pushing the wheelchair with the rhythm of the music.
To help Justin, Tom sacrificed (牺牲) far beyond expectation. Apart from losing the chance to perform, he needed to spare more time to take care of Justin and even missed his football training several times. All of these were seen by Justin and the burden of guilt weighed heavily on his mind.“I can’t meet my own needs at the sacrifice of Tom’s chance. It is time to find a solution.” Justin thought to himself as his mother pushed him on the way home. His mother lowered her head and said,“Justin, play me your new tune.” Justin took out his trumpet and was about to play when an excellent idea came to him.

8 . During the process of learning English, we students are bound to run across a variety of difficulties. When I was in senior high school, vocabulary was the biggest headache for me. There were always a sea of new words for me to cope with. Apparently, I couldn’t interpret the hidden meaning of a complex sentence, much less a well-written text. Worse still, I couldn’t memorize the new words.
Try to guess the words in context. When you see an unfamiliar word, do not skip over it impatiently. Try to puzzle out its possible meaning in the context of the sentence, then look it up in the dictionary and confirm its definition.
As for memorizing the words, figure out the spelling rules and classify them in chunks.
Learning is endless. To be a lifelong learner definitely requires a lot.

9 . Tobacco use is one of the main risk factors for a number of stubborn diseases, including cancer, lung diseases and cardiovascular (心血管的) diseases. On World No-Tobacco Day 2022,make your health a priority and quit smoking, second-hand smoke in particular!
World No-Tobacco Day
World No-Tobacco Day is celebrated every year on 31 May. This event, which was launched by the World Health Organization(WHO), has been observed each year since 1989 to raise awareness of the health problems that tobacco use can cause.
What is Second-Hand Smoke?
Second-hand smoke, or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), occurs when non-smokers breathe in other people’s tobacco smoke. The WHO states that second-hand smoke is responsible for 600,000 premature (早产的) deaths per year. Children exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to suffer diseases like asthma, ear infections, pneumonia and bronchitis.
While the consequence of smoking may seem far-off, they should be taken seriously. The WHO states that tobacco use is responsible for more than 6 million deaths every year, which is more than HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria combined.
What are the Health Benefits if I Stop Smoking?

I was in 7th grade when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was very sudden and unexpected for our family and obviously I was beaten. I tried my best to balance my first year of middle school and my home life, even if I knew this was impossible. I hated coming home from school every day for fear of what I would see when I got home. I hated seeing my mom sick all the time; she was not herself and all I wanted was for her to stop treatment and get better. Luckily, I had lots of support from my family, friends, and teachers during this hard time to help get me through it.
At the beginning of the year, I was determined to stay on track with my homework and studying and get through my first year at middle school successfully. Slowly, I started to become more distracted while at home with taking care of my mom, cleaning the house and helping my grandma cook our meals. While I was at school, I could escape and put my mom’s sickness in the back of my mind while I hung out with my friends and enjoyed playing. I noticed that my quiz and test grades were increasingly getting worse, but I never brought this to the attention of my mom because I did not want to worry her. Eventually, all of my grades were lower than C’s.
I knew that I was not doing well at school, and I needed to get my grades back up. I knew that a lot of my teachers were cutting me some unimportant work because they knew what was happening at home. Ms. Zazoski, my English teacher was the most supportive teacher that I have ever had and I am so glad that I was in her class that year.
