I suppose everyone has a particular childhood Christmas that stands out more than any other. For me, it was the year that the Burlington factory closed down. Small child as I was, the events of that Christmas will live forever in my heart.

My father, who had been employed at Burlington, never, let us know that we were having financial difficulties. We knew only that our daddy, who usually worked long, difficult hours, was now home more than we had ever remembered.

Mama, a homemaker, now sought work in the local textile mills, but jobs were scarce. Therefore, daddy’s unemployment check would now be our family’s only source of income. I don’t know for sure how they managed, but some how they did. They made sure they scraped together enough money to buy each of us a Barbie doll. For the rest of our presents, they would rely on their talents, using waste materials they already had.

While dark, rough hands sawed, hammered and painted, flexible fingers fed dress after dress after dress into the sewing machine. Barbie-sized clothes for every imaginable occasion pushed forward from the old machine. Where we were while all of this was taking place, I have no idea. But somehow my parents found time to pour themselves into our gifts, and the excitement of Christmas was once again born for the entire family.

That Christmas Eve, the sun was just setting over the distant horizon when I heard the roar of an unexpected motor in the driveway. Looking outside, I could hardly believe my eyes. Aunt Charlene and Uncle Buck had driven all the way from Georgia to surprise us. Packed tightly in their car, as though no air was needed, sat my three cousins. I also couldn’t help but notice many gifts for all of us, all neatly packaged and tied with beautiful bows. They had known that it would be a difficult Christmas, and they had come to help. The next morning we awoke to more gifts than I ever could have imagined — mountains of gifts among all that excitement and laughter.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The sun shone high in the bright, blue sky. All the students were talking in the playground in excitement. They had been told that the next day they would have a test on good manners(礼貌).

The children had thought that hygiene(卫生)was an important part of the test. One child added that they should also remember to say “please” and “thank you.” The next day all the children appeared in their best clothes. The playground was very bright that day; a contrast (对比)that was provided with the usual black and white uniform of the school.

All the children made a line and began to go inside the building. As they went, an old washerwoman(洗衣女工)who worked at the school appeared. She had white hair and carried an extremely heavy bag of clothes on her back. As the students passed, she asked for help. Some of them did not reply at all and some of them replied, “Sorry but we have a very important test and we cannot be late.”

None helped until the washerwoman asked the last student going inside, Maria. Maria replied, “Of course, I’ll help you.”

Maria took the burden(重担)off the old washerwoman's back and put it onto her shoulders. She then followed the old lady to her workplace.

The path was not a smooth one. Maria accidentally(不小心) fell down and her dress became dirty. Maria was sure she would fail her test now, for she was already late and now she was not presentably(体面的)dressed either, but she put on a brave face and continued walking.

After a while, Maria and the washerwoman came to the workplace. The old lady opened the door and Maria followed her inside. Maria was shocked to find her whole class inside the room.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要针对害羞的人,提出了一些交友建议。

8 . If you’re a shy person, meeting people and making new friends might be hard for you. The good news is that there are tons of tips, strategies (策略), and skills that can make it easier to make friends as a shy person.

Greet people warmly. If you can make others feel more comfortable when they approach you, you won’t have to do so much to start conversations or make plans.    1    This is especially important if you have trouble starting conversations.

2    It’s almost impossible to make new friends if you never leave home, so spending more time in public is an important step toward making new friends. The more time you spend in public, the more likely you are to meet people.

Choose low-key venues (地点).    3    This is why it can help to be strategic about the places you go; choose events and venues that are more low-key. For example, it’s often easier for shy people to start conversations in coffee shops.

Use friend apps to find like-minded people.     4    The key to being successful is to show “real” you. For example, listing some of your hobbies, personality traits (特点), or interests can help you connect to like-minded people.

Try to listen and focus on the other person.    5    If this is true for you, it can help to focus more on the other person than yourself by trying to get to know them better. Do this by asking more open-ended questions and working to become a better listener.

A.Don’t judge too fast.
B.Go out in public more to meet new people.
C.More people are using these apps to connect with people.
D.A lot of shy people struggle more with talking than listening.
E.Instead, other people will begin coming to you, taking some pressure off.
F.Try to reconnect with old friends you may have lost contact with for a long time.
G.People who are shy often feel uncomfortable when they’re in large or noisy places.

On my first day in college, I was filled with worry and anxiety. I have heard that college is quite different from high school. Before school started, I became concerned about taking courses for credits, which would determine whether I could graduate on time. I also worried about getting along with my classmates and the rules and regulations of the school.

I was not used to changing from high school to college, which is why I was a little scared when I went into the building. I saw so many students that I did not know. I was surprised that we have class all day and there are around 150 students in one lecture class. I went to my first class really early so that I could get a seat close to the teacher to record the class and meet my classmates. Fortunately, there were some students that I knew from high school. Therefore, the class was not so scaring any more and everything seemed to be better than before.

Now is another thing. I did not realize that college students can wear whatever they want and it doesn’t matter with the uniform. But except for one, which is about your ID. You have to wear it when you are in college. If you don’t, you won’t be allowed to have the class, so it is totally different from high school. Related to this, the college contains only two sections for one morning, each lasting two hours. We have fifteen minutes for having the break time. That day, on my way to the next class, I tried to make new friends with the other students. After the morning class, I had lunch with my classmates. Most of my classmates are from the other provinces, which gives us a lot to talk about.
