2 . As it turns out, comfort food, instead of comforting you, may actually be linked to your mental comfort but cause you to become depressed. One of the main reasons for eating junk food is stress eating, but now new research has also suggested it's harming your mental health too.
Junk food, fast food and so-called “healthy snack options” are all big business nowadays because they provide convenient options for people on the go. The decision when choosing a snack of going for what you want, over what you need, plays an important part in your overall mental health.
Researchers at Cardiff University believe that reaching for unhealthy snacks when the stress of time-sensitive commitments, such as work or study, limits your choices of snacks, won’t only destroy your fitness goals, but it can also negatively affect your mental health.
Scientists provided crisps, chocolate or a piece of fresh fruit to test subjects before measuring their effects on mental comfort. The results were amazing. Those snacking on crisps and chocolate showed greater symptoms(症状) of depression, anger and emotional disorders in only 10 days. The increase was an unbelievable 47% in depressive parts. The subjects that snacked on fruit experienced none of these symptoms. In fact, on the contrary, they became 32% less anxious.
While the researchers didn't point out exactly why the fruit group felt so much happier, the answer may lie in fruit’s ability to increase the brain’s production of serotonin, which is commonly known as a feel-good neurotransmitter(神经递质) that can help to bring about a happier state of mind and reduce anxiety.
The best results you can take away from the study is that when you’re hungry you should always be well prepared with healthy snacks that will not only fill you up but will also positively affect your mental health and keep you focused all day long.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! Oh, those little Peppers. How well I remember Phronsie, Ben, Polly, Joel and Davie, and how hard they worked in the little brown house to help their poor mother, Mamsie. My kids are not yet at an age when they realize just how poor the Peppers are. But my kids are as drawn to this story as I was as a child. And I am not the one to turn down an opportunity to share an example of children gladly helping their mother.
I’m not reaching back quite as far with 1943’s Cherry Ames, Student Nurse by Helen Wells, but convincing my kids that once it wasn’t easy for nurses to wear caps and dresses. When I was little, I couldn’t get enough of Cherry’s adventures. How pioneering Cherry was! She had a job when there were few jobs available to women, she never got married, and she solved mysteries when men couldn’t. Cherry always knew what to do. She was smart, pretty, strong and ambitious. I love her.
I know the time will come when my son asks, “Come on, Mom, Didn’t you read any books with men in them?” and I’ll have to answer honestly, “No. But maybe one day a few.”
The day will come when we can go back to the library and see what is new on the shelves, and that will be a great day. But for now, I plan not to let any book on our shelves go to waste. Then I took a closer look at the small, tired woman with a big smile and a sweater in her hands, happy to be giving me something so nice. My words died in my throat. She didn't wear jewelry or perfumes because she was content with spending what little money she had on me. Suddenly, my mom was beautiful and extraordinarily wonderful in my eyes.
