DJ: Hello. A lot of you have probably just got your A-levels and you’re looking forward to going to university. But more and more young people are deciding to take a gap year before they start their degrees. Today I’m talking to a group of young people who’ve all decided to take a year out before they go to university. What are they going to do? Rosie? What are your plans?
Rosie: I’m going to work in a department store.
DJ: Why do you want to do that?
Rosie: Two reasons really. I’m going to study Management at university and this will give me the chance to find out what it’s like to work in a big organization. And I’ll also be able to earn some money.
DJ: What about you, Christopher?
Christopher: I’m going to do community work with a conservation group. I think it’ll be good to do something really useful. And I’ll meet a lot of interesting people, I’m sure.
DJ: Will you get paid for it?
Christopher: Well, we won’t get rich doing it, but we’ll be all right. We’ll get about £20 a week plus food and accommodation.
DJ: Helen, what are you going to do?
Helen: I’m going to travel around Europe.
DJ: Are you going to work there?
Helen: I hope so, or I’ll have to come home again. I might try and get a job—you know—in a hotel or something like that.
DJ: Why do you want to do it?
Helen: Well, mainly because it’ll be a change. After all, I’ve been at school for 13 years. I just want to do something different. It’ll give me new experiences and I’ll need to be more independent.

One day my friend Lily and I were talking about some parties that we had attended. Then suddenly I remembered that our best friend Emma’s birthday was next Saturday and we had not planned anything for her birthday!
At once we started discussing what we could do for Emma’s birthday. It suddenly came to my mind that we could throw a surprise party for her. I suggested that we could do it at my house as my parents and my brother were going to a farm and I was going to stay home. We also realized that nobody’s parents would allow their children to throw a party at their own houses as they would get dirty.
After that, we started deciding what things we could do at the party and what we could give her as a present. Finally, we agreed to give her a bunny (兔子) house as Emma has a baby bunny but she did not have a house for it.
The next day after my parents and my brother left, I invited Lily to my house. While Lily was coming, she ran into Emma, which made Lily nervous.
She thought that Emma would get suspicious (怀疑的) but thankfully Emma did not suspect a thing. Until the time Lily arrived, I gathered all the decorative (装饰的) items (物品) I had. I saw the cake which Lily had baked and it looked amazing.
I started decorating, while Lily began sending the invitations to our friends, and then she also joined me to decorate the room. When we finished decorating, we got very tired. So we decided to do the rest of the things the next day.
Finally, the day came. Everybody started coming and they were very excited about the party. Then I called up Emma and told her that a cat was stuck in (被困在) a tree in my back yard so that she would definitely (一定) come to my house to help me rescue (拯救) it. Later, we all hid (藏) in different places at my house.

There have been so many acts of kindness that have touched me deeply. But the one that stands out the most was the one that happened, of all places, at the blacksmith shop at Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts.
I had visited the village that day with my two children and my mother, who came along to enjoy this living museum, but also to assist me. While my daughter, age eleven, did not need the additional care, my son, at age seven, most certainly did.
When my son was a baby, it was very clear to me that there was something different about him. After countless trips to different specialists and the completion of diverse testing, a diagnosis of a particular chromosoral (染色体的) disorder was made, whose symptoms were also consistent with autism (自闭症). My son was constantly in motion and had no sense of danger, requiring that his caregivers watch his every move to prevent him from running away or heading into traffic. He also loved strangers, thinking that everyone was his potential best friend. He greeted everyone with hug.
The fact that he looked much older than his actual age, and he acted much younger, made it even harder for strangers to accept him. Although my son was still too young to recognize when he Was being rejected, every harsh word, refusal, or look of pity broke my heart. I had started to avoid taking him out in public.
That day, at the village, I had walked around taking my son’s hand, ready to protect him from being hurt by anyone. For some reason, my son had insisted on visiting the blacksmith (铁匠) building. He chatted about the shop for the entire day, constantly asking if it was time yet to visit the blacksmith. Knowing that refusal in any form at that place would cause my son to experience a great disappointment, I saved that building for the end of the day.

The whole time in his office he kept looking at the clock, thinking about his daughters. He actually left work at 4:00 pm that day. But after reaching Mary’s school, he considered it a good chance for them to overcome fear in life. He decided to stay in his car to see whether his girls could get on the bus safely.
When it was 4:30 pm, Mary went to the school gate and waited for Jane. Jane got there in a few minutes, and they walked quietly to the bus stop. A few high school teenagers and a woman stood at the bus stop. Jane asked the woman if the bus stopping there was the Number 2 heading toward Clinton Street.

This year, September 15 took on a whole new meaning for me. I met Bill two years ago, as a freshman in high school when we were in the same drama class. Bill was very popular — it seemed like everyone knew him. He had a way of finding joy in every detail of life.
This is all the more remarkable because Bill is in a wheelchair. He doesn’t let a tragedy stop him from making the most of every opportunity. Whereas most teens in his place take special classes separate from the rest of the school, Bill instead has chosen to attend the normal high school, in an effort to be just like every other ordinary teenager. But I knew from the moment I met him that Bill was anything but ordinary. Indeed, he was extraordinary.
Bill was a hit in drama class. Everyone wanted to act in a scene with him, because he was so fun to be around. He never failed to entrance the audience with his expressive face and bright smile. Bill also took part in our school’s annual student art event, skillfully building a “race car” around his wheelchair. No greater applause was heard than the cheers that erupted from the student body when Bill was wheeled past, sounding the horn (鸣笛) and dramatically turning the steering wheel of his “car”.
I am a member of the Interact club at my school, which is committed to bringing students together in positive ways and breaking down barriers. We hold a special party on September 15 annually, which is especially for students like Bill who have special needs. As the party organizer, I went to the party, but last party things changed. Many had found their dancing partners and wanted to use the extended lunch period to practise new dance steps. So I, alone in my “single status” attended the dance solo (独舞).

“What are you doing with that ponytail (马尾辫), dear Joe? You look like a little girl!" Mr. Cooper said when Joe walked into his classroom on the first day of school. The rest of his classmates laughed. Joe looked down in shame. But he knew he had to keep growing it. He had his reasons.
Joe had started growing his hair the previous school year. No one paid too much attention to it then because the summer holidays had begun. But now that he was back, everyone saw how overgrown his hair was because he kept it in a ponytail.
Unfortunately, the comments didn’t stop, and the other boys in the class started teasing him every day. They thought that clearly he just wanted to look different. The poor eight-year-old boy returned home every day in tears, but he never told his parents what was happening. Joe started hiding his tears in the bathroom at some point.
Their art teacher, Mrs. Burns, was somewhat new at the school, and she found Joe crying one day when everyone left for recess. “Joe, what’s going on? Why are you growing your hair so long?” she asked kindly.
“Well, I volunteered in a children’s hospital last April. There were many kids who had cancer and lost their hair,” Joe explained. After a pause, he continued, “The hospital called for young volunteers to grow hair and donate it. The hospital will use the donated hair to make beautiful wigs (假发) for those unfortunate kids. Since last April, I have been growing my hair. Unfortunately, now boys in my class often laugh at me due to my long hair.”
Touched, Mrs. Burns said, “Do your classmates know why you grow your hair?” Joe shook his head, saying no one asked him. “Do you have photos of the kids in that hospital?” Mrs. Burns asked. “Yes,” Joe said, and quickly took a few out from his school bag.
