2 . As climate change quickly advances, many Middle Eastern countries aremaking the change from oil-based economies to ones that attract people fromaround the world--for travelling, business, work or to live.
One such example is NEOM to be built in Saudi Arabia. A key part of NEOM is “The Line”, a $725 billion futuristic city designed to house 9 millionpeople. It is a mirrored (镜子) wall-like building 200 meters wide and 500 meterstall. To be built in north-western Tabuk province, the project will spread 170 kilometres from the Red Sea across deserts, mountains and valleys.
At first look, the project appears environmentally impressive. The city area isno more than 100 metres from any point in the city. A high-speed electric publictransport service makes sure every part of “The Line” is within 20 minutes away. Unluckily, as in many high-rise buildings with a large population inside, a vertical (垂直的) transportation would be needed, for it is just like a 125-floor building.
The project costs also seem OK at $55,000 per person. Let’s say this isachievable in a country like Saudi Arabia and only covers infrastructure (基础设施). Even so, it remains to be seen how super-high-speed transport and mostadvanced infrastructure and services within the hugest building ever built can becost-effective.
The Line is planned for green living. Energy comes from renewable sources, waste water is reused, and it owns the latest “smart city” and mixed-use buildingtechnologies. Car ownership is avoided in favour of walking, cycling and publictransport.
However, the materials to be used and the building of such a big projectcould be very harmful to the environment. The plan says no one would be morethan two minutes from nature. But does this include the waiting times for a liftWithout careful design, a high dependence on vertical transportation may ruin thepleasure of walkable or bicycle-friendly areas.

3 . At the foot of the Tianmu Mountain in Zhejiang, a homestay (民宿) is attracting travelers from far and wide, which has won architectural (建筑学的) medal at the 2021 German IF Design Awards.
The owners of the homestay are a couple in their late 30s who decided to return to their hometown three years ago. Li Xiumei used to be in charge of a division at a company in Hangzhou, and her husband was a sales director. It was an ordinary situation where Li’s husband was on business trips a lot and Li worked overtime on weekends. City life sometimes is not easy.
In 2018, they quit jobs and went back to Dongtianmu village, which lies in a forest of bamboo. The first time they drove into the village was one late afternoon. The cooking smoke was rising from the foot of the mountain, which gave them a very different feeling from the city.
The homestay was built beside her husband’s old countryside house. The old house is preserved (保留), while a brand-new building was built on its side and the whole site is made up of four courtyards. It has been updated to have a hall, a tea room, a kitchen, a dining room. Japanese cherry trees are planted in the east courtyard. A swimming pool is placed in the west courtyard, with a bar located on one side.
Li and her husband love gardening and music, and their new home gives them enough space to continue their interests and relax in the heart of nature. Li wants to share the quiet country life, so she makes her new home a homestay. In 2019, the homestay became an online hit after guests shared their experiences on social media. “The longer I stay here, the more I feel it was the right choice to come back, and this is more meaningful than making money,” Li says.

4 . Here are some of the world’s most unusual events.
☆ World Ice Golf (高尔夫) championship, Greenland.
For more than 10 years the World Ice Golf championship has been seen as the most extreme golf competition in the world. In 1997, architect Rolf Henning-Jensen was asked to design the world’s first ice golf course among huge icebergs (冰山) and heavy snows of Uummannaq, a small town on the west coast of Greenland- 600km north of the Arctic Circle. There golfers face extreme temperatures as their first task to deal with. Then it will take player time and patience to accommodate themselves to white “green” and orange balls to play with. Determined by weather conditions, this event is scheduled for March each year in Greenland.
☆ Balloon Fiesta, the United States.
Have you ever been taken to the sky in a hot air balloon? The yearly Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta gives you the chance to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city and countryside. Since 1972, perfect October weather, blue skies and wind known as the “Albuquerque Box” have worked together to allow balloonists to control their way thanks to the direction of blowing winds. This is the only place in the world to enjoy balloons flying in the blue skies each October.
☆ El Colacho, Spain.
The world’s most dangerous festival takes place every year in a small Spanish village Castrillo de Murcia near Burgous. El Colacho means devil’s (魔鬼) jump and in fact this is the act of baby-jumping. Its purpose is to force a devil to leave the child’s body. Men dressed as devils jump over small babies to guard them against illness and bad spirits. Many consider the festival to be dangerous as “jumping devils” could hurt babies. But locals believe the action protects their babies from bad things and organise the jump in the streets, so people can watch or even join.

10 . The music world lost a rock and roll superstar this week when guitarist Eddie Van Halen passed away. He was only 65 years old.
Eddie Van Halen was a founding member of the band Van Halen. He formed the group in 1974 with his brother Alex, who played the drums. Van Halen released (发行) its most popular single, the song Jump, in 1983. Jump rose to the top of Billboard Magazine’s list of Hot 100 songs and stayed there for five weeks. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio lists Jump among its “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll”. Eddie Van Halen released at least 15 record albums with his band over the years, selling more than 80 million around the world. In 2007, Van Halen entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The Van Halen brothers were born in the Netherlands. Their father was a professional musician. Their mother was from Indonesia. In the 1950s, some Netherlanders did not support the mixed-race (混种族) marriage, so the family moved to the United States. They settled in southern California. Eddie and Alex Van Halen had to learn English in their new land. Both brothers studied piano for years before getting interested in rock and roll.
As a child, Eddie was considered musically gifted. Eddie told a reporter he did not learn to read music. He said he would watch his teacher play and memorize his moves. He also said that he never took a class on playing the guitar, although he studied under Eric Clapton for a time. His father was among the first to recognize Eddie’s guitar skill. “You’ve got it, kid,” Eddie’s father said to him early on.
Eddie’s guitar playing was hard and fast. He was energetic while performing, often jumping like an acrobat (杂技演员) as he played. He was known for the way he tapped on the guitar strings with both hands. It influenced many musicians that followed.
