文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了手机带来的信息焦虑的危害及如何缓解这种焦虑。

1 . Do the endless stream of messages and the thought of replying to unopened texts give you anxiety? Can the group chat feel so overwhelming that you want to throw your phone out of the window? Texting anxiety is a real thing, and more common than you’d think.

In the last 25 years, texting has changed the way we communicate greatly. And many would argue, not for the better. The average person in 2022 checks their phone 262 times a day, up from a daily average of 80 in 2016. Overwhelmed, many end up consciously or unconsciously opting out, stopping responding to loved ones and friends. Unfortunately, not everyone will be understanding.

Leah Aguirre, a psychotherapist explains that text conversations are usually a source of anxiety as they come with a lot of uncertainty. “We can’t predict how someone will respond, if they will respond, or how quickly they will respond. We can’t control other people’s actions or behavior or how they think and interpret (解读) things, and for people that are already prone to anxiety this can be hard to cope with.”

Aguirre says this is reflected in a physical reaction, tightness in the chest, tensions, or increased heart rate. You also may feel a little more on edge or short with others, compulsively check your phone or have obsessive and intrusive thoughts about the text conversation. Simply hearing a notification (通知), if our phone is out of reach, causes the brain chemicals associated with stress to spike.

As well as the personal effects, text anxiety can put a strain on your relationships with friends and loved ones. A 2018 study found that romantic partnerships and friendships are far more successful when you and the other person have a similar texting style. If both parties are quick responders, the relationship is less likely to hit the rocks. Similarly, if all parties are happy to go hours, days, even weeks between responses, then everyone is happy.

Establishing a texting schedule with people you interact with frequently is one way of reducing some of the stress if you have different texting styles. Aguirre suggests limiting the amount of time you are on your phone also helps with the anxiety. “By cancelling or reducing how much contact you have with the source of anxiety, you’ll feel some relief,” she says.

“You can give yourself a pep talk, tell yourself that you are okay and that you have no control over another person’s response or behavior. Remind yourself that this is just a phone or a text message and that, big picture, you are okay and will be okay.”

文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。讲述了一位八年级的女孩从沉迷于社交媒体失去自我到解脱回归正轨到理解社交媒体的真正意义并正确使用的过程。

2 . When I was a young girl in 8th grade, my classmates told me how they met new friends and even chatted with celebrities on the Internet. I was intrigued and wanted to experience these exciting things. I opened an online account; this was the beginning of my journey through the virtual world. As time went by, I became accustomed to checking social media more frequently. I buried myself in social media, chatting with friends and sharing my life with them. Social media was a source of happiness and more so, it brought a sense of satisfaction, pain, and frustration.

My newfound interest started interfering (干扰) with my schoolwork. Instead of checking my school notes in time as usual, I checked social media more often to see what was happening with my friends’ lives. But I later discovered that by becoming more aware of other people’s lives, I became less in tune with myself. I was more focused on the illusions social media presented than the realities of my life. Thus, I started to sense depression, jealousy and hatred as a result of comparing my life with others. And I became much like what the people in the virtual world expected of me.

Luckily, my phone went missing and my mother refused to get me a new one. I felt sad and lonely. However, her refusal led to something more meaningful to my life. Within a month, I became less concerned about other people’s lives and more concerned about my courses. And I had more time to study and sleep.

Lack of social media also made me realize that social media had been interfering with my study habits and my private life. For example, I had no privacy. Anyone who had access to my social media profiles could easily find out where I lived. Moreover, I sometimes spent 15 hours browsing through social media without doing anything productive.

After examining my use of social media, I decided not to entirely quit social media, but to change the way I use them. I unfollowed sites that didn’t contribute to positive or educative aspects of my life. I only use social media to spread positive messages and connect with others. Social media is not inherently bad, but it becomes terrible when we are addicted to it.

1. After creating an online account, the author       .
A.became less in harmony with herself
B.showed no concern for her school work
C.lived a more exciting and satisfying life
D.cared more about others and felt happier
2. Lack of social media made the author       .
A.develop new hobbies
B.focus more on her studies
C.forget how to access her account
D.unfollow sites connected with her life
3. The author might agree that social media       .
A.ruins people’s life and should be quit
B.broadens people’s views of the world
C.challenges people’s self-control ability
D.plays a primary role in people’s life
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.A struggle in the days without phones.
B.Ways to get rid of social media addiction.
C.A personal experience with the virtual world.
D.Drawbacks of social media outweigh benefits.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了关于愤怒的最新研究结果,只要控制得当,愤怒也有好处。

4 . Anger is good for you, as long as you control it, according to new psychology research. A new study from Carnegie Mellon University shows anger may help people reduce the negative effects of stress and help you become healthier.

“Here getting emotional is not bad for you if you look at the case of anger,” said Jennifer Lerner of Carnegie Mellon. “The more people show anger, the lower their stress responses.”

Lerner studied 92 UCLA students by asking them to count back from 6,200. They must say out loud every thirteenth number. Researchers disturbed them by asking them to count faster or ask them other questions. If they made any mistakes, they had to restart from the very beginning. Many students felt upset about making so many mistakes or got angry.

Lerner used a hidden video camera and recorded all their facial expressions during the test. The researchers describe their reactions as fear, anger.

Other researchers recorded the students’ blood pressure, pulse and production of a high-stress hormone (荷尔蒙) called cortisol. People whose faces showed more fear during the experiment had higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone. Both can have lasting effects such as diabetes (糖尿病), heart disease, depression and extra weight gain.

When people feel fear, negative effects increase, but when they get angry, those negatives go down, according to the study.

“Having that sense of anger leads people to actually feel some power in what otherwise is a maddening (令人发狂的) situation,” Lerner said.

Lerner previously studied Americans’ emotional response to the 9·11 terrorist attacks (9·11 恐怖袭击) two months after the incident. She found people who reacted with anger were more optimistic. These people are healthier compared with those who were frightened during the event. So in maddening situations, anger is not a bad thing to have. It’s a healthier response than fear.

1. In what ways can anger be good to people?
A.By showing their optimistic side.B.By reducing their stress.
C.By reducing high blood pressure.D.By taking the place of fear.
2. The researchers made the students angry by ______.
A.recording their performance secretly
B.asking them to count to 6,200 again and again
C.disturbing them and making them start all over again
D.criticizing them when they made mistakes
3. What does the underlined word “both” in Paragraph 5 refer to according to the passage?
A.Fear and anger.B.Blood pressure and pulse.
C.Blood pressure and cortisol.D.Higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone.
4. What is the story mainly about?
A.The findings of new psychology research.B.What you can do with anger in certain cases.
C.Different effects produced by anger and fear.D.Healthier responses in maddening situations.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。现代人的生活很忙碌,因此,你的邮件必须要明确地传达你的目的,才更有可能得到回复。

5 . If writing a letter a hundred years ago was like sitting down with someone in a quiet room and talking face to face, writing an email today is like shouting at someone across a noisy crossroads while they’re rushing to a meeting. Everyone is too busy. We keep getting information from emails, text messages and the web. It’s very possible that your email will be read when the receiver is on a phone or doing other tasks.

This means, when writing an email, you should be clear.

I often receive emails from people who are interested in some sort of knowledge communication but never make it clear how they would like me to take action. Do they want to have a coffee? Do they want to make a phone call? It’s unclear. So I won’t respond (回复) at all.

It’s more possible for you to get a response from someone if it’s clear what the next step is. Let’s say you’re reaching out to a film director you admire for advice. Don’t just email him/her with:

I’ve been a fan of your films for years, and I’d love to ask you some advice. What do you say?

Instead, write something like the following :

I’m a longtime admirer of your films and have the greatest respect (尊重) for your filmmaking skills. I would love to ask you a few questions about how you made your first film. Would you be available to have a 15-20 minute phone call next week? My schedule is wide open all day on Thursday and Friday if you are free then. I know you’re very busy, so I promise to keep it short.

The second example explains the subject matter and the fact that you just want to make a phone call. This is more acceptable because you’ve already suggested a date. In other words, you’ve respected their time, and they now know that dealing with you won’t be a headache.

1. What does the first paragraph say?
A.Few people write letters nowadays.B.People seldom talk face to face nowadays.
C.People are too busy to read an email carefully today.D.People can deal with different tasks at the same time.
2. Why doesn’t the author respond to some emails?
A.Because he is too busy with the task at hand.
B.Because he thinks it will waste too much time.
C.Because he doesn’t want to communicate with strangers.
D.Because he doesn’t know what the sender wants from him.
3. What does the underlined word “it” in the last but one paragraph refer to?
A.The email.B.The phone call.C.The film.D.The meeting.
4. Why does the author think the second email is better?
A.Because it includes detailed and clear information.
B.Because it makes the film director feel proud.
C.Because it is a more official email.
D.Because it sounds more polite.

6 . My First Marathon

A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.

I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”. The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!

The night before my marathon, I dreamed that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.

Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!

At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"

By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.

By mile 21, I was starving!

As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.

I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

A.He did not take part in the running.
B.He passed the finishing line and got a medal.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍关于如何在旅途前后让生活更轻松的规则。

7 . If you are planning on travelling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.

First of all, always check and double——check departure (启程) time. It is amazing how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten, my secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10:50. When I arrived at the airport, the clerk at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.

The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have some local cash with you when you arrive in a country. Once I arrived at a place at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. “Listen! I only take real money!” The driver said in anger. Luckily, I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was embarrassing.

The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.

1. According to the passage, the driver was angry because the writer ________.
A.gave him false money
B.had no enough change
C.offered to pay by credit card
D.did not give him the local money
2. Generally, in May the weather in London is ________.
A.cool and rainyB.cold and dry
C.hot and wetD.warm and dry
3. The writer mainly tells us ________.

C.a few simple rules about preparing for a trip
D.a few simple rules about enjoying ourselves on trip easier
