1 . Michael Todd wore the same clothes every day for the first three weeks of school. When the other kids began to notice that he was wearing the same black pants and blue, teal, and gray long-sleeve shirt day after day, Todd, a freshman at Martin Luther King Jr. College Preparatory High School in Memphis, became the target of laughter. But there was little Todd could do. His mother simply couldn’t afford to buy him new clothes.
Two of the kids piling on were Antwan Garrett and Kristopher Graham, a pair of freshman football players. But over time, they realized that their unfavorable words felt like bullying (欺凌) and seemed to be slowly crushing Todd’s spirit. Something finally clicked. “I felt like I needed to do something,” Graham told CBS News. So he and Garrett hatched a plan. They went home and hunted through their own drawers and closets.
The next day at school, they met Todd at their third-period class and asked him to come into the hall. Todd was understandably nervous about being called out by the larger boys. “He wasn’t smiling or anything, and I was like, ‘I think this is going to make you smile,’” Graham says. “I told him, ‘We’re in the same third period, and I apologize for laughing at you, and I want to give something to you to make it up.’” He then handed Todd a bag. Inside were clean shirts and shorts, plus a brand-new pair of New Balance sneakers.
Todd was blown away. “I was very happy,” he told WATN-TV. “Surprised and upset, completely.” And Todd got much more than a new wardrobe. He no longer sits alone at lunch. Now he eats with his new friends, Garrett and Graham.
“I’ve been bullied my entire life,” Todd told CBS News. Reflecting on the day Garrett and Graham called him into the hall, he called it “the best day of my entire life, basically.”

Eyam, Peak District
In 1665, a virus-infected pack of cloth arrived from London for the local tailor of Eyam, which led to the spread of the plague (鼠疫) throughout the village. To prevent the spread of the disease, the entire village was blocked for over 14 months with only 83 surviving out of a population of 350. The tragic history of this village has not been forgotten and a visit here is one of the top things to do in the Peak District.
York
The city of York has a long and colorful history, countless rulers, world wars, and even the Viking invasion. One of the best things to do in York is to wander through the streets. It is a literal walk through time, with ancient city walls, Roman baths, a Viking settlement, medieval (中世纪) churches, and beautiful Georgian architecture.
Liverpool
When it comes to British and world history, if there is one UK city that played a major part, that would be Liverpool. Located in North West England, Liverpool was one of the most important ports in the world. Liverpool is also world-famous for being the birthplace of the Beatles! If you head to Matthew Street, you can go to the Cavern Club, where the Beatles used to play. Liverpool is quite a small city and you’ll discover very interesting cultural facts about Liverpool.

5 . Last Monday, I visited Jalan Besar to find a new fan blade for a standing fan that my daughters had broken.
I’d worked in the Jalan Besar area 30 years ago and remembered that there were lots of small hardware shops selling unusual things so I thought that I would have no problem finding a fan blade. However, after walking around for almost an hour, I found out that these shops were no longer around.
When I was ready to give up and go home, I spotted an old-fashioned hardware store. After being greeted by a woman, I explained my predicament. She immediately asked me to show her the broken blade. Out of nowhere, a man who looked to be in his 60s came out.
He asked to see the blade and then disappeared into the shop. He came back with a blade but it did not look the same as what I had in my hand. We compared the two blades and he said that it might work.
I asked him how much it was. He told me that he had taken the blade off an old fan that someone had brought in for repair. He said: “It didn’t cost me anything, so why should I charge you for it?” That really touched me. I took the blade home and it work perfectly! My daughters got a “new” fan for nothing.
When I told them this story, they were shocked as they are used to patronizing big modern shops where everything is transactional and the employees go strictly by the book. Not so much my wife. She is almost in her 60s, and said this reminded her of the kind aunties and uncles who used to run small shops and were always ready to help others when she was growing up.

6 . There is a saying about the south-western Chinese province of Guizhou: “Not three feet of flat land, not three days without rain, not a family with three silver coins.” But,with the help of a spicy sauce, Tao Huabi, also known as “China’s hottest woman”, has well and truly opposed this rule.
Born in 1947, the eighth daughter of a poor family in a village of mountainous Guizhou, Tao did not go to school and did not learn to read or write. She spent her childhood hungry, and survived the Great Chinese Famine by eating plant roots, according to a biography on Weibo. When her husband died, she moved to the city of Guiyang and started selling noodles with a sauce that she made herself, She eventually opened the charmingly named Economical Restaurant in the 1990s. When a new highway brought truck drivers to Guiyang, she gave them free jars of the sauce and they spread the word.In 1996, she set a factory up in a house in Guiyang, and a year later Lao Gan Ma Special Flavour Foodstuffs Company was born.
Miranda Brown, professor of Chinese studies at the University of Michigan, who is writing a book on the history of Chinese food, says that in China, Lao Gan Ma’s popularity is mainly because her products are natural. Chinese consumers tend to want foods that perfectly mix regional flavors and use ingredients grown from the soil of those regions. And today Lao Gan Ma is also increasingly popular overseas, especially in the US.
According to its website, the company produces 1.3 million bottles daily, helping the historically poor Guizhou achieve 10. 5% growth—the second fastest of every Chinese province that year, and ahead of the national rate of 6.7%.

9 . Every day people all over the world celebrate their cultural heritage, simply by living their lives in a way that stands for who they are and where they come from. But one day in a year is set to celebrate the joint history and heritage of the human race. World Heritage Day encourages us to celebrate all the world’s cultures, bring awareness to important cultural relics and sites, and agree on the importance of preserving the world’s cultures.
On this day, there are a number of different events that happen all over the world. This includes a wide range of activities, meetings, and visits to heritage sites and relics. For those who are unaware of the significance of preserving world heritages, a heritage site is basically a place that is of cultural importance, It preserves the culture of intangible attributes(无形的特质)and physical artifacts(古器)of a society or group that is inherited from older generations.
Perhaps the most important way to celebrate World Heritage Day is to search out those locations(所在)near you that are counted as World Heritage Sites, and perhaps pay them a visit. Before doing so, research the sites, find out what steps are needed to protect them, and respect them during your visit.
You should also take a look online to see if there are any events going on in your local area in honor of World Heritage Day. You will find that a lot of events take place to increase awareness regarding the preservation of important buildings and relics.
It is also a good idea to spread awareness regarding this day with the people that you know. This is something you can do with ease via social media. You can post a message that informs your friends, followers, and family members of this day and encourage them to post something too. You could post a photo of one of the best international sites you have visited or one that is on your bucket list, and then ask your followers to reply with their choice. This is a great way of getting everyone involved(参与)and raising awareness of this date!

10 . When it comes to US middle school science and engineering, girls rule. Girls took the top five prizes at the 2019 Broadcom MASTERS, a competition for middle school students across the country.
The winners were announced (宣布)last month. They were honored for their STEM successes as well as for showing skills in critical thinking, communication, creativity and team-work. In first place was 14-year-old Alaina Gassler. She designed a system to make driving safer by reducing blind spots-the areas that drivers cannot see outside their vehicle (车辆)Gassler developed the technology while in eighth grade.
“She, along with the entire Class of 2019, is already leaders in their fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM),” said Paula Golden, president of the Broadcom Foundation. “These young inventors give every one of us hope for the future.”
The Broadcom MASTERS competition is a project of the Society for Science & the Public. It was set up to encourage young people to attend college and take up jobs in STEM fields. It was open to students in grades 6, 7 and 8 across the country.
This year, all the major awards in the competition went to girls. The top prize winner, Alaina Gassler, says she got the idea for her project after seeing her mother struggle with blind spots in her family’s car. Blind spots lead to many accidents—about 840, 000 accidents a year nationwide.
Gassler’s system helps drivers see “through” the A-frame pillar (A柱)—the part of the vehicle, in the front, that joins the top and front window. The A-frame pillar is important for safety, and cannot be removed. Gassler used a camera to help drivers look “through” the structure (结构)to see what is blocked. The camera sends video to a device (设备)that shows images on the other side of the pillar. The driver then can “see” what’s in the blind spot.
The young inventor won a $ 25, 000 prize for her invention. She told Popular Mechanics she can make improvements on her device with that money. Gassler said she wants to improve the picture—making it easy to see in any weather, or any time of the day. She also told the magazine she hopes to sell her idea.
