文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是研究发现人可以而且确实可以在很大程度上发生改变,并且分析了发生改变的原因。

3 . You might have heard someone say that a song changed their life. And maybe you used to hate tomatoes, but now you like it. No one doubts that we change as we grow older. But do we change in major ways? Can we really change who we are? People used to believe we stay pretty much the same throughout our lives, but researchers are increasingly finding that we can and do change in big ways.

Psychologists have identified five dimensions that help us understand someone’s personality, which are called the “Big Five.” They are: 1. Openness: How open are you to trying new things? 2. Conscientiousness (尽责性): How responsible are you? 3. Extroversion (外向):How friendly, outgoing, and enthusiastic are you? 4. Agreeableness: How caring, trusting, and generous are you? 5. Emotional stability: How calm are you, especially when problems arise? Everyone has different levels of the big five dimensions. For example, Harry Potter has high levels of openness to experience, while Hermione Granger would score high in conscientiousness.

Scientists used to think that each person’s “Big Five” stayed the same their whole life, but newer research suggests that the dimensions do change. People who took a personality test as teen-agers scored very differently when they took the same test 50 years later. Three dimensions usually changed more than the others, which are emotional stability, conscientiousness, and agreeableness. In fact, most adults were more emotionally stable, more conscientious, and more agreeable than when they were younger. Researchers considered this a sign that we mature over time, perhaps learning to get along better with others.

Even though people change over time, the relationship between dimensions often remains similar. For example, someone who was very open to new experiences but who was not agreeable as a teenager was likely still more open to new things than agreeable as an adult. Scores changed, and sometimes changed a lot, but they didn’t change randomly.

1. Why does the author mention Harry Potter and Hermione Granger in Paragraph 2?
A.To identify the impact of the big five dimensions.
B.To stress the value of openness and responsibility.
C.To analyze some main characters in popular fiction.
D.To illustrate various degrees of personality dimensions.
2. Which of the following is the most likely result of people’s aging?
A.Becoming more hot-tempered.B.Becoming more considerate.
C.Becoming less responsible.D.Becoming less generous.
3. What does the last paragraph suggest about one’s personality dimensions?
A.Personality dimensions change accidentally.
B.One is likely to be more open than agreeable.
C.Relationship between dimensions stays unchanged.
D.Changes in personality dimensions follow some pattern.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.The Effects of Changing.B.What Are the “Big Five”?
C.Do People Really Change?D.Personality Dimensions Matter.

4 . Do you get your best ideas when you are bored, or when you are out doing new things? What should we look for when we want to be more creative? Boredom and stimulus (刺激物) may be opposites, but studies into creativity suggest that actually we might need both.

Writing for BBC Culture, Clair Thorp looks at the role that boredom plays in the creative process. Many writers and artists credit being bored with helping them have their best ideas —JK Rowling came up with Harry Potter while on a long train journey. Thorp tells us how some researchers believe that boredom drives our brains to find something to do—leading to creative ideas. So, maybe we should take the advice of the musician Questlove and learn to ignore the distractions that we can find on our phones.

However, before we all start planning how to bore ourselves into creativity, Sandi Mann, an academic and author, warns that too much boredom can take away the energy we need for creativity. Many experts talk about the importance of finding new experiences in order to be more creative. Actor and writer Kayode Ewumi recommends getting on a random bus and seeing where you end up or learning a new musical instrument as ways to avoid writer’s block. Professor Gerard Puccio, a professor of creativity studies, believes that having to look at new things, or old things in a different light, can force us to make unusual connections and come up with innovative solutions.

So, perhaps what we need is a balance—enough stimulus to make us look at things in different ways, and enough boredom to give us the breathing space to work through these thoughts.

1. Which statement will Questlove agree with?
A.Musicians tend to feel bored with their careers.B.Online information is the source of inspiration.
C.New experiences invite more different ideas.D.Boredom can promote creative ideas.
2. According to Sandi Mann, what could be the problem with having too much boredom?
A.Not having enough energy to be creative.B.Failing to gain inspiration from others.
C.Being stuck in old things.D.Losing interest in creative work.
3. Which might be the best way to become more creative?
A.Thinking independently all the time.B.Making use of materials at hand.
C.Balancing boredom and new experiences.D.Looking for stimulus here and there.
4. How does the author explain the point in the text?
A.By listing figures.B.By quoting celebrities’ views.
C.By conducting experiments.D.By relating historical stories.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。在过去的四十年里,大量的研究表明,各种动物都有不同的叫声,具有特定的含义,其中人们对鸟类的叫声倾注了大量关注和研究。

5 . One key element of human language is semantics (语义). Scientists had long thought that unlike our words, animal vocalizations (发声) were involuntary, renecting the emotional state of the animal without conveying any other information. But over the last four decades, numerous studies have shown that various animals have distinct calls with specific meanings.

Many bird species use different alarm calls. Japanese tits, which nest in tree holes, have one call that causes their baby birds to get down to avoid being pulled out of the nest by crows, and another call for tree snakes that sends them jumping out of the nest entirely. Siberian jays vary their calls depending on whether an enemy is seen looking for food or actively attacking — and each call gets a different response from other nearby birds.

Two recent studies suggest that the order of some birds’ vocalizations may impact their meaning. Though the idea is still controversial, this could represent a basic form of the rules governing the order and combination of words and elements in human language known as syntax (句法), as illustrated by the classic “dog bites man” vs. “man bites dog” example.

Even if some birds share basic aspects of human language, we still know very little about what’s actually going on in their minds. Most animal communication research has focused on describing signals and behavior, which on the surface can look a lot like human behavior. Determining if the underlying cognitive (认知的) processes driving the behavior are also similar is much more challenging, as at the heart of this question is intentionality: Are animals merely reacting to their environment, or do they intend to convey information to one another?

1. What was scientists’ long-held belief about animal vocalizations?
A.They conveyed no emotion.B.They were semantically related.
C.They varied greatly with species.D.They expressed no intended meaning.
2. How does the author develop paragraph 2?
A.By listing data.B.By giving examples.
C.By providing definition.D.By making comparisons.
3. What does the underlined word ”this” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.What birds’ vocalizations mean.B.How rules govern human language.
C.What the two recent studies indicate.D.How bird’s vocalizations are combined.
4. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Shared aspects of human and birds’ languages.
B.Focus of most animal communication research.
C.Underlying, cognitive processes of birds’ vocalizations.
D.Insufficient knowledge about birds’ communication intentionality.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了交通信号灯的来源以及之所以选用红色、绿色和黄色作为信号灯颜色的原因。

6 . The first traffic lights in the United States were installed because of an increase in traveller on the road in the 1920s. Worried about accidents, towns and cities installed traffic towers to help the flow of cars. Officers manned the towers, using whistles and red, green and yellow lights to indicate to drivers when they should stop and go.

Due to the absence of effective traffic signal systems on some streets, it caused risks at intersections. Then, William Potts created the first tricolour, four-directional traffic signal. The very first four-directional traffic light was installed at Woodward Avenue and Fort. But throughout the country, there were still a lot of systems for traffic lights and patterns in place. Since this could end up causing more problems for drivers, the Federal Highway Administration set uniform standards in 1935for all road signs, pavement markings and traffic signals, requiring them to all use red, yellow and green light indicators.

Red is the colour with the longest wavelength; that means that as it travels through air molecules, it gets diffused(扩散)less than other colour, so it can be seen from a greater distance. Yellow has a shorter wavelength than red but a longer wavelength than green. This means that red is visible the furthest away, yellow in the middle and green the least distance away—a helpful advanced warning for needing to slow or stop. But this could be a coincidence. Red meaning stop originated with train warning lights, and it’s not clear whether that was chosen based on wavelength, contrast against green nature or natural association of red with things like blood. It could be a combination of all three!

Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Eventually, highly reflective materials were developed, and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones, some traffic signs and school buses continue to be painted the colour.

1. What’s the purpose of installing traffic lights in the 1920s?
A.To increase the speed of cars.
B.To improve road safety and efficiency.
C.To reduce traffic jams in towns and cities.
D.To obey the standards of the government.
2. What does the underlined word“this”in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The first tricolour,four-directional traffic signal.
B.The installation of the first traffic signal.
C.The existence of different traffic lights and patterns.
D.The absence of traffic signal systems.
3. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.The differences among the three colour.
B.The wavelength of the three colour.
C.The reasons for choosing red as the stop signal.
D.The relationship between red colour and its wavelength.
4. Which may be a disadvantage of red as a stop sign?
A.It can’t be seen in the distance.
B.It is a kind of highly reflective colour.
C.It is not suitable to be used in school zones.
D.It can not be clearly seen in certain surroundings.

Adler lived with his unemployed mother and a younger brother in a small house in Durango. Like other boys at his age, the small, golden-haired boy wanted to play with his friends and have fun, but fate had other plans. After observing what was happening in his house, the boy decided to do something for his family. He picked up his only toy, a ball, and left his house with a mission—to help his family.

Little Adler walked to the nearest store with his last toy in hand, hoping he could sell it. His innocent mind could only come up with this idea to help his mother, unaware that no one would buy the ball from him. While the little boy was selling his toy at the street, a man with the TikTok name Ruben Cervantes spotted him. Curious, he approached Adler to see what happened to that little boy.

With tears in his eyes, the little one said, “I just want to sell my only toy, sir. Would you like it?” When Cervantes learned Adler was selling his toy to help his family, he asked, “How much is it?” Adler replied, “I don’t want money, sir.   just want milk and bread for my family.”

At that moment, Cervantes was so moved how this little mind could possess such mature concepts. While other children at his age were enjoying and living a carefree life, Adler was worrying about his home’s financial situation. Without hesitation, Cervantes took the ball from the boy, gave him a hug and said, “Don’t cry, my boy. I’ll keep your ball for now, hoping to play it with you one day.”

Cervantes did buy milk and bread in exchange for his ball and sent him back home. The boy flashed a toothy smile and said, “Thank you so much, sir. I’m looking forward.”

8 . Singers seem to have an inborn talent for foreign tongues—most notably when it comes to pronunciation and accent. It’s something that the American singer Taylor Swift does a good job of making her French sound realistic in front of fans during her tours. “A foreign accent is a piece of cake for the singers.” says Susanne Reiterer, a nurolinguistics researcher at Vienna University.

In a study by Reiterer, published in New Scientist in 2015, 96 participants categorized as singers, instrumentalists, and non-musicians were tested for their abilities to imitate a language unknown to them—in this case, Hindi(印地语). Reiterer’s team found that singers had an advantage over instrumentalists in foreign language imitation, but both singers and instrumentalists outperformed non-musicians.

“Since talking uses the same biological makeup as singing, the two must be related both biologically and neurobiologically. It’s Heschl’s gyrus(颞横回) that works. You can change a lot by training, but something is pre-given as well, “Reiterer adds.” Biology plays a leading role. If you have a strong predisposition musically, then you have more power basically in your hearing areas. You can discriminate sounds better.”

Reiterer has also investigated how a person’s initial language ability develops due to factors such as musical ability, vocal training and children experience, to name a few, as reported in a 2021 study. It’s suggested that vocal training may allow singers to learn a language faster. What’s more, when children experience music early, they’re able to achieve lifelong neuroplasticity(神经可塑性). Speech-sound processing ability builds up in one’s whole life.

“It’s the body that feels where I have to move my tongue,” Reiterer says. “And this feeling has a correlation in the brain. That is the key to good pronunciation and the key to a good singer.”

1. What does the author want to tell us about Taylor Swift in paragraph 1?
A.Her achievement in singing.
B.Her dedication to music career
C.Her ability to imitate languages.
D.Her preference for foreign songs.
2. What does the underlined word “predisposition” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Interest.B.Condition.
C.Training.D.Knowledge.
3. What did Reiterer intend to find in her study?
A.What determines accent imitation.
B.When children begin to learn music.
C.How musicians benefit from training.
D.Why singers have advantages over others.
4. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text?
A.The influence of brain on music
B.The key to successful accent learning
C.A good singer, a potential language master
D.One’s performance: 50/50 talent and training

At Piedmont School, everyone wanted to be on the soccer team. Laura had dreamed of earning glory for the Falcons ever since she had witnessed her older brother scoring the winning goal. On the day she joined the team, she felt like she could fly.

Unfortunately, her joy did not last long. She spent most of the matches on the bench. Walking to the car after the last game, Laura’s mother asked if she was feeling fine. Laura kept quiet and tried to smile at her mother. Having spent yet another game as a reserve, Laura had not even broken a sweat. Laura also joked that she would have baked in the hot sun if she had played. Her mother assured her that she would have another chance to play. She also cheered Laura on. Laura could only shake her head as she climbed into the seat, back hunched and face down.

A few days later, Laura’s mother found she sprawled on the couch, watching music videos on her phone, so she tried asking Laura to watch soccer videos instead. Laura looked at her mother blankly, rolling her eyes. “They won’t help me and I can’t get better by myself,” Laura said.

Sighing, her mother sank down on the couch. “Laura, for every lock, there is a key. We just have to find it. What if I film you practising to help you find ways to improve?”

“But the season’s over, Mum. No more practice, remember?” Laura said. Her mother looked at her resolutely and insisted that the best players keep practising even when the season is over. Laura protested, “But to practise plays, I would need at least one other person to join me! It is difficult to do that alone.”

Laura’s mother patted her and said, “We’ll find that key too, but we have to start somewhere.” While Laura’s mother was searching her wallet for her gold key, she smiled gently at Laura. She gave Laura an assuring nod before passing her the key. “This key is a reminder for you to be strong and not give up. Let’s build something tomorrow.” Laura’s mother said.
