1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was ten the summer my dad helped me buy my first ten-speed bicycle from a second-hand store. I put up $60 of my grass cutting and snow shoveling (铲) money, and my dad put up the other half. I would pay him back in installments (分期付款) over the next six months. Although it was a bit out of style, it was my ticket to the adult world.

I spent that summer and autumn riding. I was able to ride to every corner of town. However, my sister Liz, a prisoner of her five-speed bicycle, never had a chance to keep up. Just before the Christmas deadline to pay my dad back, we were hit with several snowstorms. This allowed me to shovel enough driveways to pay off my debt. I was now officially a bike owner; it was a feeling unlike any other.

While my mom and dad were fantastic parents, they always passed off gloves, sneakers, and shirts as “presents”. Then came that fateful Christmas morning, my father gave me a used portable record player. I was excited. However, my excitement was short-lived after my dad took my sister to the garage. There, on the steps, stood a brand new ten-speed bicycle. I didn’t hear her screams of joy-all I could hear was the noisy engine of the lawnmower, the endless scraping (刮擦声) of the metal snow shovel on concrete. I’d gone through far too many hours of hard work for my used bike while Liz got her shinny new machine less than a week later.

“Let’s go for a ride, Rob!” Liz sang, my dad holding the bike upright as she got on the shining leather seat.

“Too snowy to ride,” I refused, pushing the record player farther away from me.

3 . Concerns have existed long about what’s gone wrong in modern societies. Many scholars explain growing gaps between the haves and the have-nots as partly a by-product of living in large, urban populations. The bigger the crowd, from this perspective, the greater the distance is between the wealthy and those left wanting.

In The Dawn of Everything, David Graeber and David Wengrow challenge the assumption that bigger societies surely produce a range of inequalities. Using examples from past societies, the pair also rejects the popular idea that social development occurred in stages.

Such stages, according to conventional wisdom, began with humans living in small hunter-gatherer bands where everyone was on equal footing. Then an agricultural revolution (变革) about 12, 000 years ago fueled population growth and the appearance of tribes (部落) and eventually states.

This assumption makes no sense to Graeber and Wengrow. Their research, which extends for 526 pages, paints a more hopeful picture of social life over the last 30, 000 to 40, 000 years. Hunter-gatherers have a long history of changing social systems from one season to the next, the authors write. About a century ago, researchers observed that native populations in North America and elsewhere often operated in small, mobile groups for part of the year and formed large, settled communities the rest of the year. For example, each winter, Canada’s Northwest Coast Kwakiutl hunter-gatherers built wooden structures while in summers, they separated, and fished along the coast in less formal social ranks.

Social flexibility and experimentation, rather than a revolutionary shift, also characterized ancient transitions (转变) to agriculture, Graeber and Wengrow write. Middle Eastern village sites now indicate that the domestication (驯化) of crops occurred on and off from around 12, 000 to 9, 000 years ago. Ancient Fertile Crescent communities regularly gave farming a go while still hunting, gathering, fishing, and trading. Early people were in no rush to treat land as private property or to form political systems headed by kings, the authors conclude.

2. What is the conventional idea about human societies?
A.They progressed in stages.B.They started with inequality.

4 . Sofia Goggia’s hometown of Bergamo, Italy, gets an average of just 7 centimeters of snow a year. The average temperature is 12°C. But in 2018, Ms. Goggia won the gold medal for downhill skiing in the Winter Olympics. Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway and Lindsey Vonn of America took silver and bronze. Both live in towns where it snows more than 100 centimeters a year.

In general, cold countries do better at the Winter Olympics. A culture of recreational skiing, skating and snowboarding lends itself to good slopes (斜坡) and training facilities. The more people who participate, the larger the talent pool. The Jamaican bobsleigh (雪橇 ) team never won an Olympic medal: their four-man team’s best result was 14th in 1994. Norway, with a population of just 5. 5m, is a Winter Olympics superpower. It has bagged 368 medals to date, more than any other country. Its climate (more snowy days than any other country in Europe) helps. So, too, does its long tradition of skiing. A survey in 2013 found that 70% of Norwegians own a pair of cross-country skis.

Warmer countries that buck the trend tend to spend big. An analysis in 2021 found that a country’s share of world GDP was the best predictor of Summer Olympic glory. America does exceptionally well at the winter games, too. Italy, Spain and Australia command a higher share of global GDP than the vast majority of countries that compete in the Winter Olympics. They are also the only three countries with average temperatures above 13°C to have won medals.

Since Australia increased funding for its Olympic Committee by over 60% a year in the mid-1990s, nearly all its future gold medalists have set up training headquarters in Canada or Europe. The American Olympic Committee helps cover costs for coaching, training, health care and housing. Cash prizes for medalists may also make a difference. Italy pays $214, 000 to athletes who bring home gold; Spain gives them $112, 000. Other countries are more creative. In 2016 Germany gave Olympic medalists a lifetime supply of free beer. South Korean winners are free from national military service. All four countries have punched above their weight at past Winter Olympics.

1. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.A big snow.B.A gifted skier.
C.A surprising result.D.A popular event.
2. What caused Jamaican bobsleigh team’s poor performance?
A.Their low spirits.B.Their unrealistic goal.
C.Terrible training methods.D.Insufficient public participation.
3. What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Have a high GDP.
B.Get a large talent pool.
C.Perform well in the competition.
D.Spend a fortune in training athletes.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Impacts of climate on winter sports.
B.Great efforts by rich warmer countries.
C.Creative rewards to Olympic medalists.
D.Secrets to success in the Winter Olympics.

文章大意:文章是一篇说明文,介绍了人类的幸福感与他们所居住的地方的景色之间存在联系。

7 . As the proverb goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.     1     A paper published two years ago in Nature found a connection between people’s sense of well-being and the scenicness (美景) of where they lived. The paper’s authors measured scenicness by conducting a survey among volunteers.

The connection, the paper’s authors found, held true whether a neighborhood was urban or rural.     2     Nor did levels of air pollution have any influence on it. The authors also discovered that differences in volunteers’ health were better explained by the scenicness of where they lived than by the amount of green space around them.

3     The team behind that Nature paper have nevertheless decided to have a go. They have adapted a computer program to recognize beautiful landscapes, whether natural or artificial, using the criteria that a human beholder would employ. The program’s task was to work out, by analyzing each photograph’s features in the context of its Scenic-or-Not ratings, what it is that makes a landscape scenic.

Most of the results are not surprising. Lakes and horizons scored well. So did valleys and snowy mountains. In artificial landscapes, castles, churches and cottages were seen as scenic.     4     The analysis did, however, confirm one important finding from the team’s previous study, which is also a message for town planners. Green spaces alone are not scenic. To be so they need to involve contours (高低起伏的轮廓) and trees.     5

A.But surroundings matter.
B.Hospitals, garages and motels were not so much.
C.So people have a deep affection for where they live.
D.It bore no relation to volunteers’ social and economic status.
E.Therefore, less grass and more trees and bushes would be welcome.
F.Natural landscapes are rated as scenicness as opposed to artificial landscapes.
G.Determining what scenicness is, though, has always been frustrating for scientists.

8 . Women were less likely than men to support the Vietnam war, the Gulf war, or the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. They commit far fewer murders. They are less likely to favor strikes. For some scholars, these are grounds for thinking that a world run by women would be more peaceful.

But European history suggests otherwise, according to political scientists Oeindrila Dube and S. P. Harish. They studied how often European rulers went to war between 1480 and 1913, and found that states ruled by queens were 27% more likely to get involved in wars than those ruled by kings.

This was not all the queens’ fault: men, seeing them as soft targets, tended to attack them. Frederick the Great of Prussia once declared: ”No woman should ever be allowed to govern anything.“ Shortly after becoming king, he attacked the newly crowned Archduchess of Austria, Maria Theresa, and seized Silesia province. Despite years of war, she never recovered it.

But perceived weakness is not the whole story. Queens, the researchers found, were more likely to gain new territory. Catherine the Great expanded her empire by some 200,000 square miles. And married queens were more aggressive than single queens or kings, whether single or married.

The authors suggest several reasons for this. First, married queens may have been able to form more military alliances(联盟),making them confident enough to pick fights. Their husbands had often served in the army before they married, and were well placed to strengthen military ties between their homelands and their wives’ states.

Second, unlike most kings, queens often gave their husbands a lot of power, putting them in charge of foreign policy or the economy. During the 1740s, Maria Theresa’s husband, Francis I, reformed the Austrian economy and raised money for the armed forces while his wife ruled much of central Europe. Prince Albert was Queen Victoria’s most trusted adviser, shaping her foreign policy until his death in1861. This division of labor, the authors suggest, freed up time for queens to pursue more aggressive policies.

The modern era, too, has witnessed female leaders in wars: Golda Meir and the Yom Kippur war, or Margaret Thatcher and the Falklands. The number of countries led by women has more than doubled since 2000, but there is plenty of room for improvement: the current level of 15 represents less than 10 % of the total. A world in which more women took power might be more equal. Whether it would be more peaceful is a different question.

1. The underlined “perceived weakness” in paragraph 4 means that________.
A.women were less likely to support wars
B.women could not recover lost territory
C.women commit far fewer crimes
D.women were soft targets
2. Why were married queens more likely to gain new territory?
A.Because their military alliances picked fights for them.
B.Because they were ambitious and aggressive by nature.
C.Because their husbands were supportive in state governing.
D.Because they centralized all power into their own hands.
3. What is the purpose of mentioning the two female leaders in the last paragraph?
A.To imply there is room for improvement in gender equality.
B.To indicate more females become leaders in modern times.
C.To illustrate female leaders cannot prevent wars in modern times.
D.To suggest female leaders have their share of wars in modern times.
4. According to the passage, we can safely conclude that________.
A.married women are not fit to govern their states on their own
B.female leaders should be responsible for all wars throughout history
C.the world wouldn’t be more peaceful even if more women took power
D.the division of labor allows queens to survive economic crisis

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者受到启发,热衷于步行,走遍了所住城市每条街道,也给作者带来了更多的发现。

10 . Several years ago, I read about William Helmreich walking every street in New York City. I thought, “I can do that for Montreal.” With little hesitation, I devoted the next five years of my life to the project.

I’m a keen walker, but I did little preparation for this undertaking. All I did was to buy a map. It didn’t even show all of Montreal. So, when I say I walked every street in Montreal, I actually walked the full length of every street on my map.

I never walked through any shabby neighborhoods. From one end of my map to the other, all houses were well looked after. People went to great lengths to decorate their homes, and with this came one of the great pleasures of my walks: the different measures they took to decorate their frontage(正面).

I discovered that pigs are a popular decorative element throughout the city. The type that is dressed up as humans, I mean. I saw pigs wearing dresses, shirts, and even swimming costumes. They weren’t the only animals around either. One garden’s giant moose was particularly eye-catching.

Every outing has its wonders. Never assume a neighborhood has little of interest to offer. You must be trained to seek out strange things. Otherwise, you might never spot the clothes on the sidewalks. If I stopped to collect everything I saw lying around abandoned, I could fit out a small country. Where did they come from? How did people lose their shoes while out walking? A puzzle.

There was enough fun in my walks that I’d have a few laughs and come home lighter-hearted than when I left.

As my project progressed, I felt like I owned the city. I could get off at any subway station and my feet remembered the route to the best shops. They also conveniently recalled the location of the closest washrooms.

Anyone can get in on this walking game. I admit with some shame, I used to feel completely fulfilled huddled(蜷缩) in my part of town but walking its streets has truly opened my eyes to Montreal’s full menu. So just head to a neighborhood to nose around. I can assure you that you’ll feel like a pioneer with the discoveries you bring back.

1. Why did the author decided to walk the streets of Montreal?
A.Her friends told her to do so.
B.She wanted to do some research.
C.She wanted to get some exercise.
D.She was inspired by somcone’s experience.
2. What do we know about houses in Montreal?
A.Many houses are abandoned.
B.All houses are decorated with pigs.
C.People enjoy decorating their houses.
D.Most people keep pets in their houses.
3. What amazed the author during her trips?
A.Large numbers of houses.
B.The decoration of subway stations.
C.The clothes deserted on sidewalks.
D.Animals walking on the streets.
4. How did the author feel on her walk?
A.Cheerful and satisfied.B.Thrilled and energetic
C.Relieved and grateful.D.Puzzled and disappointed
